Things GTA IV did better than GTA V

Recommended Posts

Max.pain

The general gameplay obviously. Say combat, driving, missions, level design. IV beats V pretty hard.

I've always liked how each vehicle in IV has unique engine sound. V however, just like 3D era, most of the engine sound is copy pasted. it's even more annoying that newer Online vehicles has unique (and more powerful) sound for each vehicle

  • The universe separation.

Regarding the universe separation, it felt more complete in GTA IV. You could see some Easter Eggs referring to the 3D era, posters with pictures of some characters of the latter and the airport's name that was reused from GTA III (as well as Fernando Martinez as the host of Vice City FM in EFLC), but they all felt like nothing more than minor references.

GTA V on the other hand was kinda flawed in that department. It brought back a radio station's host, Lazlow, but this time not only as a radio host, but as a supporting character that makes a physical appearance. What was even more disappointing is the fact that they brought back the four street gangs from the 3D era's rendition of Los Santos - Ballas, Families, Vagos and Aztecas, reusing the same styles, colors, and even names. Not only that, but they also made it clear that the Families formerly had a set operating in Grove Street and that the OGs heading it went out of town, which was the primary reason that brought the ridiculous "Just because gangs have the same names, colors and had influence over X neighborhood once doesn't mean that they're the same gangs from the 3D era, nor that any events that occurred in the 3D era ever happened in the HD era." conclusion on the table. So, you wanted to separate the new era from the previous one and start fresh again, yet you don't only literally bring back gangs that had significant roles in the 3D era, but also try to explain that they are not the same, and then make obvious references and hints to the 3D era? That will obviously prevent it from becoming as fresh as it could've been.

With GTA IV, you might give it a think and figure out that the Hustlers and Spanish Lords might be the closest thing to what might be the HD era's counterparts of the Hoods and Diablos in GTA III/LCS, which wasn't only more different and unique than it is between GTA V and San Andreas, but also more interesting.

I agree. This is only semi related but I like the fact that IV features an all exclusive cast, meaning that all characters in story originated from that game itself. Sure GTA IV was helped by the fact that it was a reboot and so no characters from previous GTAs could return, and I'm not against cameos, but I feel IVs cast feels really special this way, feels like a self sustained universe of characters and made the story feel a bit more unique to me.

Even GTA III has couple of characters from the previous game iirc so IVs cast feels unique and fresh and I think this was one thing it did better, it's story was memorable on it's own without any cameo characters from previous games appearing to boost the story so to speak.

A subjective one, but the explosions in IV look more visually appealing ( to me) than the explosions in V

Yeah, the explosions in IV were larger, noisier and the ear ringing tinnitus effect also adds to it.

I also like how in IV pieces of flaming debris sometimes fly out of the explosion, feels like a cool effect 😄

And you can get knocked back/sent flying by explosions without dying.

I like how chain explosions work better as well. In V if a car explodes all neighbouring cars just explode instantly. But in IV although sometimes a neighbouring car might explode instantly more often it'll set on fire first so you get an unpredictable and chaotic chain of events with cars burning, fire spreading, people running away or falling out of cars on fire, and cars exploding one by one.

Dynamic physics animation. (RAGE+Euphoria)
The auto-aim good for headshots springing from cover.

Everything else I'd say are different rather than better or worse. If you want arcade speed you play V, if you want challenging reality you play IV. If you want a depressing but focused and emotional story you play IV, if you want an action movie heist buddy story you play V. If you want wide roads and hills you play V, if you want claustrophobic city streets you play IV,

Everything is better. Just that autoaim shouldn't be there, that's just like training wheels. That's all.

You can turn it off though so what's the problem? Some of us need it 😛

No you don't. It at the very least, should not exist in Multiplayer.

Fair point for multiplayer. But I like it in story mode and am glad there's the option to have it or not.

Git gud son.:p

Admittedly I used auto aim when I first started playing GTA IV, but since the shooting mechanics are so great I can only play with manual aim now. I've also got an XB1 controller with stick drift on the right stick which is for aim so it keeps things interesting when I'm having to keep it in place during an intense shootout.:D

Ways of earning money in free roam are so much better in all 3 games (and most of them actually make you feel like a criminal, unlike V).

Stevie's car thefts, vigilante, Most Wanted, Exotic Exports, gang wars, drug wars, fight clubs, arm wrestling, Jacob's drug deliveries >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Doing the mundane task of buying stocks like a 50-year-old accountant

Sure, one could argue there's not much to buy in IV, but honestly once you see the prices of weapons, they'll change their minds.

Earning money after each story mission felt more satisfying too IMO in comparison to having to wait to earn money from the heists and then after finishing the story do the one-time-only stock market exploit for maximum profit.

You don't get paid for Viligante or Most Wanted. Dunno why, it's dumb. I guess it can technically still be counted as a way of making money as you can pick up money that the criminals drop though.

But I totally agree, love all the crime based side missions. And I think the "economy" of IV is well balanced, you don't naturally make a huge amount of money in the game and have no regular income, and while there's not many different things to spend on, weapons and healthcare are the most expensive in any GTA game. So I find I have to watch my money both during and after the story. Money is more "pointless" in GTA games where you have billions plus more income rolling in constantly and/or a generous amount of gifted/free weapons and don't even have to think about it.

Actually you do. You just have to pick up the money from the main criminal.

And the controls other people use matter how? GTA IV has both freeaim aiming and auto-aim. I have played with both types and played on pc. GTA IV has had over 25 million copies sell and most people dont have an issue with aiming.

good god it was a fu*king joke... even i play GTA IV with a PS4 controller myself. i don't care if people decide to play GTA with a wiimote, a racing wheel, a joystick or a dancing mat. i thought my emoji would make it obvious that i wasn't being serious

It's kind of a shame because Ursula and Liz are good characters in the side missions where they appear, but then they're just reduced to booty calls who repeat random phrases. If there were more like girlfriends or even if they'd just given them more conversation dialogue for when you drive with them on a booty call it would've been cool. Same for when you drive with the booty call strippers, would've been more interesting if they'd chatted with the protagonists and got to know each other as a closer equivalent to girlfriends. IV girlfriends are the best for sure, always entertaining.

Idk a rocket launcher costs $15,000 and 8 rockets to fill it costs a whopping $40,000. Dying costs $10,000 a time. And the two biggest mission payouts are just $250,000 each, and no regular income or ways to exploit the game to make ridiculous amounts of money (the only real way to make more money after completing everything is by selling stolen cars and it still takes a while to make a decent amount that way). It would be cool if there were more things to spend on just because that would be fun, it would be nice to purchase more safehouses or order cars using the internet for example. But you can blow through cash pretty easily with the high prices and low income situation in IV so I don't feel like I have tons of cash hoarded with no use for it, just the basics are pricey.

Side note I kind of love that the best (and pretty much only) way to make a decent amount of money on the side in IV is......stealing cars! Must be the only GTA game that truly lives up to its name in this way.

I always have like $500.000 max when I finish the game, which is... not a lot, when you compare it to other Grand Theft Auto games.

I would love to have an ability to buy personal vehicle for Niko, though.

Trains - I know it's realistic to LA vs NY but LS passenger trains are all trams and so slow, they take ages to turn up and the stations are huge and often empty. LC the trains are regular, faster than walking, you can skip the journey and the stations are populated. All the signs are correct too in LC except those on the train fronts. I've legit been doing missions in GTAIV using the train system no problem, and taken friends and dates on them.

I've been trying to play without stealing cars lol. But my sports car off Brucie's friend I needed for racing, got ghosted from my parking spot, so I could only get a new one from the Grotti shop by taking one.
