Things GTA IV did better than GTA V

I might be the only one, but I actually preferred 1 protag over 3 and choosing between characters got really boring after awhile, especially when you are basically forced to switch the guy to progress in the story. I would rather have had a choice in the beginning to choose 1 guy to play the whole story(think about the possibilities in the story telling) and therefor getting to know that 1 person, rather than having 3 separate half-finished stories...

Definitely not buddy. Whilst I think the switching mechanic is a good idea it also kills character development and bonding with the protagonists is almost non-existent IMO. GTA IV/EFLC had the right idea to me. Want to experience the American Dream? Play through Niko's story. Want to be a hard ass biker? Play through Johnny's. Want to experience Liberty City's glitzy night life? Play Luis'.

In GTA V because we're always forced to switch it's really hard to get a feel for them as characters. Michael's pretty decent, Franklin's meh and Trevor is just Trevor lol. I'm not sure it's something I'd like to see come back. Maybe if the switching isn't so frequent and their individual stories are more fleshed out it'll be much better otherwise I'm up for a singular protagonist again or the GTA IV/EFLC method of multiple protagonists.

Because V sucks :)

Come at me V fanboiz.

Though I agree with you, can I hear your reasons?

I don't like the story, the driving, & the characters. The game had a huge potential, but it turned a complete sh*t, atleast IMO.

For me, the story was great up until after then Vangelico heist. Then it went off the cliff on the ending (badumm tss). The ending felt forced with the alternate endings, while IV story imo did went down a little bit (i LOVE the story up until Faustin's death, i think he was a potential friend) but the story still felt consistent.

The car damage in IV for me is miles better than V. When my friend first showed me the gameplay i was really impressed on how far the damage has becomefrom the 3D era, and also everything felt really, really immersive. I love the details on the driving in IV down to the smoke coming from the tires when you peel out or burnout.

Well, i'm probably what some people called IV fanboy but i don't care, V is a great game but it felt so much different than IV that it turned me off a bit. It does excell IV in some areas but yeah, i just prefer IV more.

i posted this in another thread but it shows the beauty and detail that gta 4 has. just look at how good the game looks and sounds. the sound effects for gta 4 are amazing and sound realistic

compare this

to this

listen to the sounds, listen to the music booming from cars and the pedestrians talking and the distant horns and car alarms. i hear gta 4 and i think im outside.

gta v has alot of repeated sound effects

and even look at the detail in the city on gta 4. gta v might have better graphics but the level of detail in gta 4 is greater than in gta v

I'm not sure if this has been brought up, but I think GTA IV does unlockable outfits way better as they're unlocked as the game progresses. In GTA V if you complete the first off road race you'll get a "The Moto-X outfit has been added to your warddrobe" message, but the stupid thing is it's not actually added straight away.

It holds it back until the story has been finished so what's the point of notifying the player it's been added when it hasn't? lol.

Also, there's times that just as you are about to properly Connect with one of the Protagonists, the Game rips you away, leaving you confused, and unsure as to what happened.

I'd like a switching mechanic in a theoretical remaster/remake, but for convenience reasons more than anything else. But you touched an interesting subject that V failed to capitalize on, while IV did.

All three IV's stories offered a completely different look at the city and its inhabitants. Their themes, their atmosphere, their depiction, of not just the city overall, but even the events connecting them, told a very different story each time. That is something that was accomplished fully only by taking advantage of the multiple protagonist system. The city has many facets to it, its population is composed of many different "cultures". As LCS's tagline once said: "There are many stories in Liberty City", but only through multiple protagonists you can tell some of them, while retaining the advantage of keeping a consistent tone (which is something San Andreas struggled with - many stories, frequent shifts in tone, but with one character). The colorful, glitzy insanity of Luis' world clashes with Johnny's gritty biker underground, but they still exist in the same city and keeping their stories somewhat separate made the contrast work.

What V had problems with, in my opinion, was while it used three protagonists with three completely different backgrounds too, it never took advantage of that opportunity the way IV did. Yeah, we get a couple of mission with Franklin dealing with his hood associates. Yes, we get Trevor running a drug operation in the desert. Yes, we get Michael in the movie studio. But these stories, these unique viewpoints into the different aspects of life in Los Santos and too few, too far inbetween. For the most part, we get the trio as one, cohesive unit dealing with the same issue (FIB, mostly). It didn't explore the city's street gang crime through Franklin, like TLaD did through Johnny, even though it could. It didn't deal with the city's upper class as thoroughly with Michael as TBoGT did with Luis. V took the concept and dulled it down, stripping it of all its potential. And, to be fair, I understand that. Because, as I said above, it wanted a consistent tone, while also working on a much smaller playground than IV and its Episodes had. Still, it made the addition of multiple protagonists feel rather hollow compared to what IV offered. It just didn't accomplish nearly as much as it could with them.

I believe GTA IV's/EFLC's method works better as it works on a similar principle to movies like Pulp Fiction and Sin City. Overarching stories by characters who are relative strangers to each other. That's why Niko's, Johnny's and Luis' individual stories are more fleshed out.

GTA V treats the three protagonists as a story that would be better suited to singular protagonist.

You just had to make that reference, didn't you?

OT: GTA IV is much better, just by the soundtrack, I really missed some real rock in V, just not f*cking Starship and Pat Benetar. Sure, they're good, but what if I want some AC/DC or Iron Maiden while not using the boring, generic "Self Radio"? Sounds like a f*cking New Age channel goddamnit.

I don't know if this is just me, but I'm having trouble getting attached to 5's map. With Vice City, 4, and even San Andreas, you kind of know where everything is if you turn off the Radar. Not so much in 5.

The first thing that springs to mind is the story it just blows the newer game out of the water ,sure the newer game has better stock graphics but hay how many years have pasted since IV came out , add enb to IV then their even in that department. The whole atmosphere seems closer to real life at least to me.

After playing V since 2013, transferring from 360 to PS4 as well, I very slowly started to dislike V as time went on. I think V was great and obviously I wouldn't have played it for nearly 3 years if it wasn't, but I've had the feeling in the back of my head since release that the world is not as lively as IV. I think that was the first thing that was very apparent. Then like a lot of people have said before me, the story. I never really got attached to any of them and none of the side characters are even slightly memorable. They do their function in the story and that's it.

Then I started to become aware of the technical downgrades in terms of the AI interaction, the police and the damage physics and slowly grown further from the game.

Like I said, I got my money's worth with V well enough, it's just that over time I've learnt to love the wholesomeness of IV over it.

GTA IV - Fun and funny - I think my favourite friend is Little Jacob, his interaction with Niko and his one liners still make me laugh. The bond between Niko and Roman gives the story a reason to go on. Are there any funny characters in V? The strangers missions try hard but ultimately fall a bit flat, only Cletus comes out with some funny one liners.

Why do people keep saying that the driving is realistic? The suspension on the cars are utter garbage. Waaaaay too soft. No cars behave that way when taking a corner at slow speeds. V handles that aspect much better

5's driving is downright aracadey. GTA 4 was a step in the 'realism' direction.

Meh, never found IV or V's driving to be amazing though I do like IV's a bit better. I think the best driving would be if R* combined V and IV (and sprinkled a bit of San Andreas in there).

Just watched the GTA V is better than IV video(watched IV better than V earlier). Tbh both videos point out a lot of things that appeal to me. Just wish we had a GTA game with all of these features.

Personally I find 98% of GTA V's cast unfunny and obnoxious asshats.

I would rather cars with soft suspension than cars that feel like they have none at all.

GTA IV driving > GTA V driving. :)

In IV I can power slide around corners ,and ever notice in V if you lay a patch of rubber there's almost nothing there in IV there as black as night, and when you come to a stop in IV the car it stops in V the always does a little slide before it stops you notice it more when you stop on a hill. And another thing smoke the tires in V then do it in IV and watch the smoke.

The muscle cars in IV are a lot more fun to use to mess around in the map than V. Sabre GT in V feels like it's using traction control

Indeed. Sabre GT is a beast, especially when power sliding through corners :)
