Things GTA IV did better than GTA V

There were so many things that were rushed as well as things that were overdone. That one is one of the best examples of the latter.

And when I recall that "You're a hipster" dialog, which is getting a lot of attention somehow, I cringe, because there was a lot of overacting :/

Yeah, that always catches me too. Luke and Ogg are so, so hamming it up there. There is an interesting contrast, because, as annoying their endless loud shouting matches were, I would say that for the most part, their performance in cutscenes was rather civil and believable. If there is a one thing that doesn't exactly sit all that well with me there, is that Houser's writing can at times get a bit flowery and lost in forced satirical sarcasm (I can't imagine a person like Trevor, in real life, having speeches like the "torture advocate" one, for the most egregious example), but that isn't the actor's problem.

Anyway, I digress. The point I was getting to, is that in voice-only dialogues, Luke and Ogg sometimes overact really bad. It feels like they just can't get the hang of voice acting properly. They are great actors when they are actually filming scenes, but when they just get a piece of paper and are told to just read out their lines, they are a bit out of their element.

The worst part of the story is Franklin dismissing everything with "yeah whatever." Any time he could talk about what's going on or discuss what he's thinking or any time he's set up for character development he just ends the conversation. Which sucks since all Trevor and Michael do is bicker and argue.

I think the cutscenes in GTA V were enjoyable on their own, but the story as a whole didn't come together that well. I can't really compare it to IV though, it's been so long since I played it and I was never really a huge fan of the singleplayer campaign(I mostly f*cked around in multiplayer with friends). I enjoyed GTA V a ton when I played it through, but I've noticed a lot of issues with the game on hindsight.

I just replayed the mission Hostile Negotiation, and the grittiness of the gameplay is off the charts amazing. Deafening gunfire, walls getting blown to bits by bullets, Niko screaming at the Russians. Visceral stuff.

Absolutely nothing in V even comes close to this level of epic.

"I'm coming for Roman".

"You think we care about stupid gambling debts? We care about killing you!"

I couldn't agree more.

Also, some dialogues were too tiresome to listen, because the same stuff was repeated literally over and over again. For example, some of the therapy sessions, where Michael kept vaguely saying how everything is "bad" and how he hadn't been a good boy, every single second. I mean, seriously:

- Hmm... Anything else you want to tell me?

- I ain't been a good boy, Doc. I mean, you know things just... all of a sudden get up on top and right f**king on top. Then I lose my sh*t and I hurt people, and then I feel bad about it. I'm a f**king prick.

- What about your sexual problems, Michael?

- I've been a good boy in that regard. I'm making real progress, Doc.

- Have you been acting out again, Michael?

- Ahh, you know..been a little up, a little down, Doc.

- So what about the problem areas?

- Okay well... look things are... I gotta tell you, Doc, they're awful.

- Any other violent outbursts, Michael?

- Yeah, I've had good days, Doc, but mostly they've been really bad days. I've been doing really bad things. Ya know? Hurting people.

- Doc, it's me.

- Michael, que pasa amigo?

- Not good. Things have been pretty f**ked up.

- You seem particularly confused, Mikey. Tell me why.

- Things are really bad, Doc. Really bad.

- Tell me all about it. Sharing is winning.

- I've been really bad, Doc, but I'm suffering. I've lost everything, everything that matters.

:dozing:

That's some great writing right there.

Two massive reasons why GTA IV kicks GTA V in the balls:

The Lost and Damned

The Ballad of Gay Tony

Single Player DLC's - something that GTA V will never have

Ehh.. I wouldn't close that possibility out yet.

The story and characters make GTA V look like a saturday morning cartoon. I can remember all sorts of minor characters from IV, such as Jason, Mori, Ilyena Faustin, Luca etc. but I forget half the cast of V because they're so unmemorable. I have played through GTA IV's story countless times because it's like watching an awesome movie, but I have no desire to replay GTA V's after I completed. I only replayed it once, because I couldn't import story progress to next-gen, but on that second playthrough I found myself skipping cutscenes and ignoring the story because I was annoyed with it.

The thing with GTA IV is despite its huge cast it does an excellent job crafting its characters to the various situations and predicaments Niko comes across.

For example I can still remember Niko calling Brian a dick in their encounter and then Brian's subsequent rant about mining salt for 50 years in his coke induced state. In the grand scheme of things it was a short cutscene, but it had the right amount of ingredients to make it stand out.

GTA V lacks those moments unfortunately and it's a shame because the quality of the dialogue is really good. Better than GTA IV in some ways if I'm completely honest. The problem is it doesn't utilise what it has to its fullest, but that's GTA V summed up really.

Heck, even Characters you never see in Person, like the Characters in 'I'm Rich' have some extensive backgrounds.

List of reasons:

- The story, need I say more?

- The physics, you can have much more fun with the physics in GTA IV than you can in GTA V.

- The multiplayer, not without flaws but has much less BS than GTA Online.

- The realism, they used realistic aspects when it was good. GTA V used realistic aspects when it was a pain in the ass.

- The police, they're fun to fight against and they don't blatantly cheat.

- The world, it's a living breathing world, unlike GTA V which felt like it was made of cardboard.

- The music, the whole soundtrack fit the game and felt complete. GTA V's soundtrack was too repetitive despite having more tunes, and the choices were odd.

- The DLC, two full expansions packs that offer content than most games. Compare that to GTA V's "updates", which only give you new weapons and vehicles and can't even be used in single player.

- Overall, almost everything about IV did better than V. GTA IV will be remembered for setting the bar high for video game storytelling (and endless phonecalls from Roman), while GTA V will be remembered for GTA Online, for better or for worse.

V's soundtrack was just weird. And not only that but extremely boring. And I can't have that sh*t. As soon as I get tired of the sh*t I turn it off. Then I just get more bored. So I turn the game off cause it's boring. Ya get me?

I can agree with most of what you said, but the world of GTA V is definitely much better than GTAIV's, and in no way it feels like it was made of cardboard. The 'updates' were never meant for GTAV, they are for GTA:Online, so it's not a valid point to compare.

Right now, GTA Online is the multiplayer of GTA V so it is valid. Until GTA Online is released separately, they are a part of each other. Even then, that would only make GTA V's case worse since that would mean no DLC compared to GTA IV's two expansion packs. Also, what what do you mean "much better than than GTA IV" when talking about the world? The NPCs are lifeless, and they all react the same way. They have limited reactions and things to talk about, and you'll see that pretty fast. The fact that everyone gets hostile towards you just for standing next to them indicates that this world they've built isn't as good.

Not dying after a bike stunt jump.

This. To further expand on this, I hate how when you're on a bike or ATV, the smallest landing can make you fall off and sometimes even kill you.

Another thing is that when you fly though the windshield in IV, you rarely die, yet in V you die almost always. Also there's something about the way you fly out that feels really weird, it just doesn't feel fluid. Plus that entire system is so inconsistent, one time I was driving Trevor's truck at a rather slow pace, and I hit a streetlight and flew out of the windshield to my death. Yet I can be flying down the highway in a supercar and not get ejected upon a head on impact.

Yeah it's like the game stops for a second then you get shot like a cannonball from your car.

TRISTAN the TERRIBLE

I was disappointed in BOTH 4 & 5 to be honest. Both games were fun enough but it feels like the stories havnt been as deep as the story for San Andreas was. Plus 4 & 5 really try too hard to be serious. San Andreas was almost making fun of itself; "What the hell is GPS?"
and one more thing.... the fact that 4 & 5 take place in the present results in lots of the social commentary being less relevant. I just went back and re played IV for kicks and all the humor that made sence in 2008 was just kinda lost by todays standards whereas in SA, important social issues of the day can be satirized and still remain relevent. Plus alot of the modern music they put in 4 and 5 is just plain generic... boring. The music in SA and VC really made those games addictive.

Sorry for rambling.

i know nobody probably will ever read this nonsense anyway.

Because of excellent SP DLC characters that gave GTA IV new life with more interesting characters, and enjoyable content over the boring vanilla game.

V has yet to receive any substantial SP expansions, if any.

Until then EFLC is keeping IV alive.

Your opinion is void.

I notice I never wanna rage and go on killing sprees when playing IV. I'm just so immersed it feels wrong doing so.

With V, I'm always going on killing sprees or shootouts with the cops. It reminds of the top down GTA's where thats all you could really do to have fun in freeroam.

There's one thing that IV (and previous GTA games) can be set apart by from V - that is more creative cops and other enemies. Only sentences that enemies in GTAV yell at during a fight is "asshole! ass! motherf*cker" - I personally find this annoying. Enemies in GTAIV say more creative things. Although there are exceptions in GTAV like Vagos and Ballas and the security guy who yells "what's my name bitch?!"

not only cops, but cab drivers too. in gta v they are all the same and say the exact same stupid thing but in gta 4 the cab drivers were all different and had hilarious personalities from the greek one to the asian one. it really made taking the taxi fun.
