Things GTA IV did better than GTA V

Recommended Posts

Arrows to Athens

There were no microtransactions in IV, and we received an actual good expansion DLC (TLAD & TBOGT).

Not really V, but in GTAO I literally get phone calls from Ron, Agent 14, Simeon, everybody all the time nonstop telling me to buy bunkers, hangers and all that stuff.

As much as everyone talks about the "Let's go bowling" jokes, I don't recall being called by people in GTA IV nearly as much as GTAO's contacts. At least in IV it's a simple invitation to hang out, in GTAO it's:

"See this hanger? You should buy it, the hanger that I mentioned, you know that hanger, you could make so much money with that hanger, did I mention the hanger? I'll text you about the hanger if you want to buy a hanger because hangers are wonderful".

I don't get how IV is a laughingstock for phone calls but GTAO with contacts pestering you nonstop to spend money gets a free pass.

Because as we know GTA IV is the anti-christ among mainstream gamers so everything gets amplified whilst the annoying things in GTAO/GTA V are swept under the rug.

I like that whats going in the gta iv era complete edition storylines doesnt have nothing to do with the other characters like how niko does quick business with johnmy but they dont have anytype of close relationship Luis doesnt even talk to them.like how michael and franklin and becoming friends messed up franklins storyline for me if anything luis should of been the one to not wanna see the hood unlike Luis went to jail for being involved with the streets but he still helps his friends with drug wars and doesnt even leave north holland on top of that managing a night club and making real money but still helps his friends

Franklin and luis storylines should of been switched thats a main reason most of us gta sa fans played as franklin first because we thought atleast we could have some type of gang banging experience outside of the storyline if you want that you gotta play as luis thats something gta iv did better then gta v

I never understand why people hated getting called in game so much.

If you do not want to use backup, guns, chopper, free ride, health, losing cops services from your friends; then you do not need to worry about your like / respect points. Just hang up

%100 completion, if I remember correct you need to do each activity once with each friend. After completing story do it and done.

Because people complained so much, now in GTA V we can not even call for a backup for Franklin from families against ballas. That doesn't make sense. I really miss TLAD, you really felt you are related with a gang. Because your gang members do a lot of favor to you.

Furthermore I don't understand why people constantly bitch and moan about losing the rewards if you don't hang out with them. It's not like it's a Sims game where you have to attend to them every few minutes just to keep the rewards.

In my current save all of my friends have 100% like/respect and I don't feel like I have to always hang out with them. In fact I remember only once losing a reward. I think it was Packie and it was only because I didn't quite have it up high enough. It wasn't a major hassle to get it back though.

Maybe it's not a perfect system, but I still prefer it to the alien friends in GTA V who feel like they don't even exist.

Maybe it's not a perfect system...

It is. I don't think it's possible to create a better friendship system for a Grand Theft Auto game. Seriously, IV did it right.

Pool was actually playable in IV.

Rockstar logic... "Let's add the cinema so fans can watch boring mini movies and remove pool. Better yet, let's remove all the places to play darts and just place one area out of the whole entire map and allow darts to be played in Blaine County. This way, if a player feels like playing and they are all the way in Los Santos they can grab a helicopter or plane instead of driving far just to play". :/

Side characters. I still remember their favors to protagonists, their favorite activies, clothing choices and the time you should call them.

Brucie, Roman, Dwayne, Terry, Clay, Packie, Michelle, Kiki, Karmen, Little Jacob, Armando, Henrique, Alex

In GTA V you may even forget the name of the antagonists.

But i still remember Kiki hates suits and loves the clothes from Russian shop.

I can't believe nobody ever talked about this on the thread! Prettier women! I'm sorry but Tracey, Amanda (to an extent), and the blonde bikini girl on the front of GTA 5 don't even compare to GTA 4's Lola Del Rio, Mallorie Bardas, Kate McReary, or Karen/Michelle. Those are some of the finest women in all of GTA! It's really a shame why GTA 5 couldn't have near as many pretty women. Feels like an opportunity they practically wasted. -_-

That was precisely what happened to me. By the time I got to end I had already forgotten about him. How anyone could think he's well written enough to be one of the antagonists is beyond me. It would be a stretch for him to be a minor character (no pun intended).

Even the random characters in GTA IV like Mel, Ivan, Brian, Sara, Jeff, Marnie etc are more recognisable and memorable.

The portrayal of women in GTA V seems to boil down to two things.

1) Over sexualisation.

2) Being gold diggers/cheaters.

It took me some time to warm to Kate, but I appreciate R* crated a female character with actual values. Much like Mallorie. It's a rare thing nowadays as most female characters seem to fit into those two categories I listed.

I am not sure if I mentioned that before, but I love how deep the stories of the Strange and Freaks were and how they were showing all the bad things that may happen in such city like Liberty/NYC. From Marnie, who wanted to be actress, but ended up as a porn star and druggie, doing heads on the streets to score a buck for next dose, through Jeff being sickly jealous for his wife causing a tragedy in the end to Eddie Low lurking the Alderney streets at night and hunting for his next victim. Most of the characters we could meet through this optional side mission, were so nicely developed that could easily work as a storyline characters.

I won't even get into details, where V is in that matter to avoid causing unnecessary wars in this topic.

Niko didn't half ass any dialogue for these side missions either, he's great and like main storyline Niko in all the stranger encounters. I still remember Niko's disgusted facial expression when Eddie Low is talking about animals masturbating or some sh*t, I don't remember Niko ever looking that disgusted before. Also, the mission structure follows IVs do what you want approach, like when you meet Ivan again you can drive over to where he needs to go in a cop car and the bad guys all leave.

None of it feels like tacked on last minute BS.

What's more, even though many people say that GTA IV's missions are very repetitive they are not boring - not at all - i can play them as many time as I like and I never get bored. Sadly, many missions in GTA V are just plain boring when you do second / third playthrough. For example:

"Chop" - I always hate that I must to "play" as Chop for a while and always get him off the other dog, even though I know where this guy I need to kidnap is.

"Daddy's Little Girl" - I hate the bike ride, especially in First Person (Bikes handling is awful) - It's just absolutely annoying that Michael can nearly die because of driving too fast for a long time (bad side of realism).

"Friend Request" - I just hate doing this mission. It feels so boring, even though it's quite simple and easy. "Final Interview" was similar, but I felt like it was much better (maybe because we just go in and kill the guy - no need for this 'exploding telephone' bullsh*t.)

"Scouting the Port" - Ugh, come on!

"By the Book" - another mission that's just too long - I know who I have to shoot, yet I have to torture this guy. Boring.

And many more.

Whilst I appreciate GTA V’s attempt to bring some variety that was perhaps missing in GTA IV it also brought a lot of unnecessary gimmicks.

Missions like Chop are really nothing more than prolonged chases. The whole thing playing as Chop felt pointless and of course they had to throw in a gag of two dogs screwing eachother because that’s really funny right?

Friend Request is another too. It felt too drawn out. I would’ve preferred if we could’ve just went to where Jay Norris was presenting and choose our own way of killing him. The bullsh*t of clearing the porn site pop ups just felt like an excuse to stall the mission.

Variety is welcome when it makes things better, but variety for the sake of it isn’t. Missions like Truck Hustle and I’ll Take Her are probably two really good missions that are both varied without being overly gimmicky, but don’t seem to get the credit they deserve. Truthfully I think most missions in GTA V are boring and overrated, but it’s what most people like I guess.

The story of GTA V is awful.

The story of GTA V is awful.

To be fair it's aright for video game standards, but compared to the Magnum Opuses from R* like GTA IV, RDR etc. Yeah it's pretty bad. If it wasn't for the benchmark those games set maybe GTA V's story would be more liked.

GTA V is like Skyrim 2.0 for me. It's more fun to mod it than it is to play the damn thing xD. Seriously, both those games are meh but are only saved by the modding community in my opinion.

But I don't even have GTA IV on PC (yet), though I'd like to mod it, but that's the difference between IV and V, I don't feel like I need to mod IV to properly enjoy it.

I have some mods on IV, like a better and balanced handling and increase damage mod, weapons sounds from HEAT and I do play with an enb sometimes but thats it lol.

On GTA 5 I have like more than 10 mods and I can't even install exactly what I want like the scripts because I'm on xbox 360.

in GTA4 the characters that deceased immediately deleted from the phone book. In GTA5 they continue to stay in the phone book. I mean phone book in GTA 5 is like a graveyard. If there are 13 people on the list, 8 is dead now, it does not make any sense. Calling dead of course does not go beyond than "the leave a message". Then why dont you remove them?

Ive never understood that. It just makes the phone look really cluttered with a bunch of useless contacts. Furthermore some get added like Hao that are completely pointless.

He only sends texts for races which couldve been done via email. His number has no point. Overall apart from the Snapmatic, browsing the internet and quick save the phone in GTA V just feels cheap. You cant even buy different themes or ringtones like GTA IV.
