I'm gonna try this toothpaste thing out next, and take it from there.

Thanks for the suggestions peeps

please do not do this. just try and get it repaired first. toothpaste on a disc? i don't care who might say that it works, it's a stupid thing to do. if polishing or a resurfacing doesn't fix it then try the extreme tactics or a new/used disc. that said, it is your machine and disc, so you do what you want.

Toothpaste isnt going to damage a disk. It doesnt have any acids or anything in it and is pretty gentle. People brush their teeth with it remember.

Here's what I would do...buy a new game, take it home, break one of the holding tabs that hold the disc, put the old disc inside, return to store...

...they might just do an exchange and may even have to give you one that has been unwrapped, but at least you'll have a disc that's able to be sold on eBay/etc. to make up the cost

This is absolutely the most devious game-fix I've ever heard of... and I love it! ;)

The toothpaste method extended my scratched disc life for good couple of months, but it still became unreadable ultimately.

Install the disc immediately if the toothpaste method worked, otherwise ask a friend to lend you a readible copy and install it. I guess as long as your Xbox can still recognize the scratched disc, you can still launch the game with the scratched disc after installation.

If the game lags horribly after install, try move some 2gb game files to a USB drive.

Biohazard Abyss

OP can you take a pic?

If it's laser burn, there's absolutely no hope for repair. I lost my first GTAIV disc, and my first Operation Raccoon City to my 360 eating up my disc when tipped over.

If it's scratches, then repair could be possible.

This is by far the best thread I have seen on GTAF in a long time... wtf were you thinking?

The mere idea of moving your console while it's reading a disc...

You played Russian Roulette...and guess who bit the bullet?

Toothpaste is an abrasive, albeit on a very micro scale. How do you think it gets your teeth clean?

So, when you rub it on, and a very small amount, it will buff away the scratches, or at least slightly. Its a more severe treatment than simple breath, but honestly not such a terrible thing.

Its an old fix for scratches in watch crystals, too. I think I used to do it on eye glasses before multicoating became a thing, but I may be wrong.

Of all the suggestions, the best is to ask the local Gamestop to resurface it. They'll do the same thing as the toothpaste method, but a little more high tech and with better grade of gel and sh*t.

BTW, OP, have you tried a different game.. you may have unaligned the laser in your Xbox.

This is going to sound daft but try putting some tooth paste into the scratches. Ive gotten a few disks to work in the past doing this. Get one of those lense cleaners for your console too, if the lazer is a bit dirty it wont read as well. Some CD shops over here offer disk repair services, not sure if there is something similar in the UK or if they even work. Try to isntall the disk (on a USB stick not your hard drive or you will get issues with GTA) if you can get it working

Im with you. I always refuse paying for "warranty"and give the dude behind the counter a look like he has just sent me an email claiming he is a Nigerian prince.

But if you never respond to the email, how else are you gonna get those millions of dollars in frozen assets :/?

Maybe you don't want yours but I sure want mine.

I got an email from a credible Albanian computer expert who instructed his uncle, who is a janitor at Rockstar North, on how to copy the Heists files onto a USB stick. The Albanian guy said he would be glad to send the files to me, but he has to encrypt them so they don't get spread all over the Internet, so he said he needed all my credit card numbers and PINs to construct a secure private encryption key for me. I sent him all that info last week, but he hasn't sent me the file yet. WTF??

OP, maybe your xBox is trying to tell you something. Maybe it's time to move on. We should all be so lucky. :)

it's just my opinion, but i would try and get it fixed properly by someone with the right equipment and stuff that does it as a regular service instead, toothpaste make work, but it's hardly what i'd call a real fix and it's a gamble i wouldn't risk.

like i said it's just my opinion and shooting can do whatever he likes to his stuff.

TheGoodSgtScooter

You must play WAY TOO MUCH GTA for that to happen or your console decided to rebel against you.

You must NOT READ the OP to come to that conclusion.

OT: Buy a Ps3, play with me, plaaay with MEEEEEEEEE!

But yeah, you're disk is probably screwed if Jolly man of swagger's toothpaste fix don't work.

Understood mate, gotta keep the forums clean and all that, though just an honest observation that posting in here reduces your chance of getting an answer (like that chap looking for an armour solution, I got an answer to that almost immediately in the Online section and he's been waiting three days).

Here's what I would do...buy a new game, take it home, break one of the holding tabs that hold the disc, put the old disc inside, return to store...

In the end I decided to follow the advice of Crazy Ray (yeah I know call me crazy), other than the devious part cause it makes me nervous.

Proof I ain't trolling and just been stupid n don f*cked up ma disc:

Never move your Xbox 360 when theres a disk in there.

R.I.P GTA V disk

Never insert a disk into your disc tray would be better advice.

Spelling nazi :p .... Edited by RoyalRedXIII

That's your problem right there OP, that stupid xbox 360 chewed your disk up for breakfast. So:

-Throw away your whole Xbox right now

-go get ya self a PS3

-buy some kesh kardzez

-rub some alcohol on your disc (preferably vodka)

-????

-profit

Your welcome.

After looking at this, I realized that all you do is spend money here....

you could always buy a new copy, get it insured, then taken the old one back, get it replaced... sell the replaced one to get back some of the loss of the new one, keep your new copy... profit.
