I have this exact issue on PS3. I play in Free Aim and always join empty lobbies, however, if I switch to Assisted Aim, I can find a lobby full of people no problem... Matchmaking eh...

How do you switch from AA to FA or visa versa?

You have to do it in SP - controller settings in the start menu.

The XBOX and PS3 handle lobbies differently. I think

From the Xbox side since i've never played on it. When the lobby is full when trying to join with a friend. Does it immediately tell you or does it try to load the game and then tell you the lobby is full?

It has to, like before i thought my 360 was doing the PS3 emoty room sh*t but it was because i was in free-aim - changed it and it went from 3 in a room to 16...that's an argument for another day.

- I've never had the "room full" error on the Xbox, on the 'Station i have it heaps. But if it's actually full, it's essentially straight after i click join, not so for the PS3.

- Moral of the story - my 360 never has empty rooms, PS3 does.

Autoaims always busier but doing Freeaims defo worth doing especially when you've mastered/got bored of autoaim.

Freeaim Shootouts are better, Freeaim Deathmatches are better, Freeaim Freeroams are way better as you can cruise around in convertibles honking your horn at people, amoung other things. From what I've noticed the Freeaimers are not just better at aiming but the majority of freeaimers I've met since switching over are nicer and way more mature than most auto-aimers

e.g.

Joining a Autoaim session:

Me: "What's up guys, anybody up for doing a deathmatch or mission?"

Random: "f*ck off fa**ot, your gay and I stuck it in yo momma's gut!!"

Me: "Yeah that's cool.... but you didn't answer my question!!"

Random "Ok I will... once you get me out my tank!!"

Me: "Nah I'm starting it anyway ya wee tank-abusing embryo"

Random: "The f*cks an embryo, shut up"

Joining a Freeaim session:

Me: "What's up guys, anybody up for doing a deathmatch or mission?"

Random: "I don't do deathmatches, I just shoot it out in freeroam"

Me: "Well you up for going to Trevors Airfield for some 1v1 with the new guns without any interference?"

Random "Hell yeah, can I bring my friend with?"

Me: "As long as he don't get involved til we finished"

Random: "Obviously, what do you think this is auto-aim?"

I started to make my DMs smaller with less Max Players due to the crashing issues and players leaving during and before deathmatches. Less people doesn't necessarily mean less fun/action, aslong as the people you're playing against are worthy.

This is because you don't have any friends. And, someone must tell it to you, you should have a shower.

Wraith of Vern

Like a few other people have mentioned, check that you aren't joining free-aim lobbies. You will also want to check your internet connection through dashboard diagnostics, to check that your NAT isn't set on strict.

Check those and let us know how you get on with it.

I'm glad your opinion is yours.
