You cannot comfortably do quarter-circle motions, semicircles, etc on a keyboard to pull off special moves. A member here actually bought me a fighting game off Steam and I can't freakin' play it because I need to get a wired controller to hook up to my laptop.

 

I know this thread is about racing, but just pointing this out because you said it's the dominant gaming device, when it completely flops with the fighting game genre

Gamepads are definitely better for anything that relies on exact control, e.g. racing games as neither the mouse, nor the keyboard offer any compensation for the lack of exact control. As I have pointed out before, one keyboard button only knows 2 conditions, so the buttons W, A, S and D offer 16 possible conditions (combined). But gamepad sticks offer 200 different conditions on each axis, resulting in around 40.000 possible conditions per stick.

However, when it comes down to on-foot shooting, it is a different matter, as most of the times you can turn more direct/instant with a keyboard as they lack the possiblity to offer smooth movement, resulting in keyboard users being in advantage due to very direct 180° turns. Additionally it is 10000000000% easier to manually aim with a mouse. Actually every game that is mainly controlled by the mouse will be far easier to play with mouse/keyboard combo. Also every MMO with hundreds of abilities (WoW). So the discussion around the basics are completly irrelevant, as it depends 100% on the gameplay and 0% on the skill whether gamepad or keyboard/mouse combo is better.

 

But one last question remains:

WILL they offer auto-aim with the support of gamepads. And if yes: Will they let auto-aimers play in the same lobby as free (keyboard/mouse AND gamepad) aimers?

Did GTA IV even support race wheel? Seems very unpractical to be switching race wheel/mouse and keyboard/game pad every time you enter or exit a car. Wouldn't even be possible to shoot while driving.

not sure, but its not possible to shoot and drive at the same time with any degree of accuracy with a controller either so its unlikely to matter much, haha! Most likely the mouse would be utilized simultaneously to provide better control when driving and shooting.

Some people are just haters. They hate controllers and can't handle it... They prefer the twitch style of shooting with a mouse.

And while a mouse will give a huge advantage for shooting it sucks for driving.

 

Id rather be 20-30% less accurate with a controller then have a sh*t driver. A mouse SUCKS for driving, it just feels wrong

I used a mouse and keyboard in GTA 4 and then switched to a controller because that M/K made driving a pain in the ass.. Controller is simply better for GTA since its not a twitch FPS.

 

And since i spend alot of time in FA with a controller it barely matters to me.. So what ever.

Like most games on PC you can, have multiple things plugged in and working. I have seen Battlefield players create their own USB C4 detonator using plastic bits and a few buttons. I have also seen people pick up joysticks for flying and wheels/controllers for racing/driving.

yea some games do work decently with a controller, however every game is different and I was speaking generally. as games become more complex and more controlling accuracy is needed a gamepad controller becomes inadequate and a keyboard and mouse dominates.

You can think what you want but youre wrong, its not personal preference, its a simple fact. pc is more powerful and games are better on them with more content and better graphics than consoles. play battlefield on pc and then play it on console, its a joke on console, about 1/4th the game that it is on pc, lol! You get what you pay for and consoles are sh*tty. You might have a hard time playing games with your dollar store keyboard and mouse on a pc your mommy got at best buy. My mouse and keyboard cost about as much as a whole ps3 system does and theres a reason why, its so much better, haha!
