Celticfang
Yes, I'm gonna go on a rant about games, writing and (probably) bad moviesSo this is something that's bugged me since....what, the PS3 generation? Or even earlier, the late PS2 era when devs decided 'Hey we want our games to be like mmovies'. PS2 era, you could at least tell the difference between....say, Resident Evil, and a movie but now with the PS3/4 gen.... It seems to be an unwrittten rule that the bigger the company the harder they try to make their games like movies (Look at Fight Night Champion and that game's career mode. Movie like right down to the ending....or staying with sports games, a genre you wouldn't expect, the N64 had one with the ISS series....but that was less intrusive and more a career than a movie)Why? Why do game devs, writers and companies feel the need to make their games full of scripted OH MY GOD THAT EXPLODED HOLY WTF' sequences? Why do they feel the need to make every game they touch into a movie? Interactive movies were a fad in the early 90s that died out. Anyone remember Dragon's Lair? Thought now. And if you do....well then.Either way, I wound up replaying GTA V again the past few days and then the new Wolfenstein game and.....I was bored of both. Bored of scripted sequences. Bored of missions where you have to do what the game forces you to. Even Watch Dogs, a game I like a whole lot, I gave up on because of that reason. There's this one mission....yeah,Maybe I'm just older and jaded than I was when stuff like...say....COD4 came out.Looking at it now that's scripted and the sI'd much rather have agame that's a game and not trying too hard (another problem with certain game writers and/or companies) to be a movie with overscripting and hand holding and forcing you down a level even though that bit of the map over there might just be a better route....you go over there, insta-death.I'm just bored of modern games I guess. No, I take that back. I'm really, really enjoying some games (Always Sometimes Monsters for instance) but I'm bored of the big AAA games and their attitudes towaard players and their desire to be like movies and treat players like dumb idiots. Go here. Presss X. Watch cutscene of things blowing up. Go here. Shoot these guys. Watch cutscene. Hold RT, watch cut scene....Hey I just described a mision in every call of duty ever didn't I? Wow. Or any other huge AAA title. So if anyone has any suggestions for what I ought to look into for actual freedom in games and games that don't try to be movies....yeah, feel freee to suggest them. Games are not movies. If I want to sit down and watch somebody else play through GTA I'll go and watch an LP on Youtube and probably save $760, if I want to watch a movie, I'll go to a cinema. I've seen it said before as a joke on these boards, probably by me me but take out the free roaming and missions and string the cutscene s from any GTA together and you'd have a badly written movie. That's my next point. Writing. What is up with game writers? Actually, no. What's up with them being so damn cliche? You already know the how the game ends before you hand over your $60. Good guys win, bad guys lose, people di if it's that type of game. I know games are a fantasy but just once, would it not hurt to actually have to earn an ending and maybe be on the losing side? (And no. I'm not just talking about GTA but games in general here). Personally, I'd like a crime game where I don't walk away unharmed, where I can play it out running from people or be killed off at any time after the main story's over. Think back to Mafia 1 and that game's ending. Tommy....yeah, he had it coming but it wrapped it up so well, after all he'd done he simply couldn't be allowed to live. Alright, I'll say it. I want another Mafia 1 type game, play out the story, running for my life then out of nowhere, dead.Yeah. That might come off as unfair and a dick move but it's what happens. Criminals don't get to retire in peace at all, if they anger the wrong people they're living in fear for their lives, again in the first Mafia Tommy betrayed an entire family and they dealt with him. Admittedly, there was no post-game free roam, it was a seperate mode or two in that but still...it was a very neat story.TThen again yes I'm jaded and cynical and I'm bored of the same old, same old game stories. I want a game (let's say crime) that shows the consequences of your actions, not just a hey you passed the mission screen then you get to go about your merry way. Personally I'd want something dark, something very, VERY hard hitting and gritty and well written and that adjusts according to what you do.Ah fack it. I want a life simulator where you can do whatever you want and the game adjusts to you but you only get one shot at it and no saves. There. I said it. So.... trip
Ah fack it. I want a life simulator where you can do whatever you want and the game adjusts to you but you only get one shot at it and no saves. There. I said it. So.... Sounds like you need a copy of The Sims to satisfy. Games have been growing with technology and have [almost] always wanted to tell a story as part of their offering. That is what made the original Donkey Kong so popular. There was a story and scripted sequences to help the player lose themselves in the game. Later (in that same generation of earlier video games) there was a full on animated story game called Dragon Lair. A game that required very minimal input from the player - not to mention that the input was only recognized at heavily scripted sequences and there was zero freedom. If the game wanted to to push up on the joystick you pushed up on the joystick - anything else meant death. Both of those games existed long before the days of Playstation. My rambly point(early and on first cup of coffee) is just to say that story based games have existed since about the birth of video games. The good news is there are always a boat load of games that aren't heavily story based and do required hardcore gaming skills and all that. na89340qv0n34b09q340 1 My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens
tymaster50
There is an easy solution, don't play the games. Thne they won't be able to bother you.

Sounds like what I have heard Second Life is but never played it and never want to do cannot say, minus the one shot thing. kipakolonyasi
tl;dr but i guess i'm with you. i always want more gameplay and less story in my games. even in gta v it seemed to me story sometimes got in the way of gameplay and distracted me. but some games just handle it perfectly like uncharted. 90% of the cutscenes are skippable and you can just skip them and only play the game arcade ly. oh and max payne 3's arcade mode was genius every game should have that. yeah that's my opinion but i might be talking stupid right now because i tl;dr. Yeah because it makes complete sense to focus primarily on story-telling in a video game. Edited June 21, 2014 by Vercetti42 Th3MaN1

Yeah because it makes complete sense to focus primarily on story-telling in a video game. Different strokes for different folks dawg. Somedays if I want to be serious and play GTA, and others I just want to dick around on Saints Row. Same concept really.
GunWrath
You have to think, casual gamers make up the majority of the video gaming market. Story-telling games and games that attract with action-packed sequences and plots seem to obtain the most purchases/profit. I enjoy some games with a decent story involved.. though there are some games out there that take a really sh*tty approach to it or have no clue wtf they're doing. Games like Mass Effect, Halo and others are good games that are only as good as their stories.. while games like Battlefield, Call of Duty, etc are more for your multiplayer crowds that only have 'flashback' plots and sh*t. To each their own though.. I'm glad AC has a story, otherwise, it probably wouldn't be as popular or exciting.
Spaghetti Cat
So you want games to be like...games? Was that the tl;dr version? To add on to what Trip was saying, it probably happened around the time when CD-ROM's were put in the PC's. You see people used to play video games on CD's, yeah I know right? Anyways, since the game developers could now use actual video ( I know right?) they went hog wild and forgot about making an actual game. Happened long before Playstation. na89340qv0n34b09q340
So if anyone has any suggestions for what I ought to look into for actual freedom in games and games that don't try to be movies....yeah, feel freee to suggest them. "Indie" games are where it's at. Steam (well, I dunno, I don't use steam, but from what I've heard from friends), flash game sites, and blogs that focus on independent development should be where you look for games if you want something gamey with less focus on story. Search around for awhile and find stuff you like.
