I always do it, I've even timed how long it took; about 4,5 minutes.

Going directly to online was about 10-20 seconds faster than doing it via SP & switching character.

It just seems to take longer for me. Feels like forever. Plus I usually start in invite only before I move to public.

I play since Oct 1st, don't think that has anything to do with it but joining Online from the loading screen takes ages for me, but it does work.

I always use this method. It's good because I can do other things while game is loading and when I'm back, I'm already in online.

It works on PS3 . but it takes WAYYYY LONGER than you go from SP . Twice as longer atleast /
