The Funktipus - All The Best Funk - Get Da Funk In

Recommended Posts

George Clinton and Parliment/Funkadelic are coming to town this summer and Lee Perry is back again (missed him earlier in the year) gonna be a good summer.

Man oh man, feels great to listen to Groovallegiance again. It's been years I didn't.

The P-Funk family need it's own topic. Everything "Dr Funkenstein" created is simply funktastik.

His (their) work was sampled a trillion times.

RIP to Marshall. I was not familar with him by name but him being associated with the Ohio Players is a great loss indeed.

I'm pretty sure you'd consider this funk.

Mr. Marshall Eugene Jones played the bass and did the vocal on this track too. One of my favorite of the band.

May his soul rest in paradise

What makes his death even worse for me is that right before I found out about it, I was playing some old games for nostalgia and decided to play San Andreas and Love Rollercoaster was playing on Bounce FM (My most favorite song on Bounce without a doubt), right afterwards decided to do a Google search on them and that came up.

Thought I'd give a shout to a mate of mine who makes all types of music, including funk:

That's dope. I was trying to remember really hard from what artist or band it was from. I recognized the Motown label on the vinyl. Well I found them.

The track was composed and arranged by Rick James. It's on the Throwin' Down LP by Rick James and also on the Reunion LP by The Temptations Both released in 1982.

I have both in my vinyl collection but not the 12 inch record that probably has an instrumental version on the other side. Haven't heard the track in years.

My ex is a big Rick James fan so she used to play his records a lot including the Stone City Band, Teena Marie and the Mary Jane Girls.

That's really awesome. I love his other videos too, with all that old equipment the sounds are totally legit, if you told me I was listening to some '80s funk records and obscure '90s dance tracks I'd believe you.

Aye he's not into making House and stuff these days though sadly. To be fair I was talking to him about House and he has a point about it -- you can't really get a lot of quality songwriting out of House, so these days, he just makes a lot of Disco, Funk and Boogie tracks because it gives him more of a writing range to make tracks from.

If you look at his older videos and look at his more current ones, you can tell his songwriting chops have come on quite remarkably. I told him that the other day -- always a very modest man and has a load of humility which is always very nice to see from anyone who shows creative prowess :). I hate cocky little f*ckers who let it go to their head, which I have seen from Electronic music circles.

I have a lot of old equipment but always so, so busy with other priorities -- I'll have to power it all up again at some point.

Hey guys,

Need some help, maybe someone of you guys knows which song was sampled in this House track, since the sample is probably from some Funk/Disco track.

At 0:30 I can hear the synthesizer from Some Kinda Lover by The Whispers. I was playing the vinyl last weekend :music: This is a respectable sample if you ask me.

A wonderful band of classy gents. They made dope funk tracks. Their records should be in any funk freak collection.

Incredible, dude! I'm a big fan of Funky/French/Disco House. Those genres sample a lot of Funk/Disco music and I always like to check out the original stuff and in this case the original song rocks.

Thanks!

@AAR: Ah... that track Brick by Dazz must have been sampled by Ice Cube/his producer on No Vaseline... Nice I finding out where a sample comes from by accident. Cheers dude.

@Mister Pink: Haha I'm glad if I made you discover something new. Hey there are tons of 50's till 80's jazz, blues, soul, latin, rock and funk tracks sampled in Rap, Hip Hop and R&B. Now that you have posted Ice Cube here's some more.

I think you know who sampled it.

The master Dr. Funkenstein and his assistants. George Clinton once said in a 90's interview that "FUNK IS THE DNA OF HIP HOP"

(They must be one of the most sampled band in history if not the most)

Hey there are tons of 50's till 80's jazz, blues, soul, latin, rock and funk tracks sampled in Rap, Hip Hop and R&B.

This is pretty much the reason why I like this kind of music, I grew up listening to 90's West Coast Rap like 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, N.W.A, Westside Connection, etc. while they sampled a lot of these artists, such as N.W.A sampling Ohio Players Funky Worm in Gangsta Gangsta and Dopeman as well as sampling their Players Balling (That I posted before) in Dayz of Wayback.

Plus when I was only like 5 years old I love the Temptations mini-series as they we're pretty much the ones that brought me into 60's-80's R&B/Soul/Funk/Disco.

I was never into 90's mainstream music as a kid in the early 90's growing up in Europe. I was always fascinated about the 70's and 80's pop music especially music by Afro-american (Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, Chic, The Jacksons, The Commodores... not knowing if they were black, white, red, blue, yellow... whatever) for some particular reason. It's the soul and positive energy they have. 70's and 80's disco music by Afro-American and Latin-American performers and composers were widely more popular in the clubs and dance floors back in the days. I used to love listening to my parents and uncles vinyl records and tapes. I even recorded some vinyl songs I liked on blank tapes to listen on my Walkman. Bought a lot of 70's and 80's (mainly 80's) compilation CD's in my teens till I got definitely hooked on vinyl records. Friends used to think that I was strange for liking the old stuff. I didn't care because it's what I like and still do. I love all kind of music as long it sounds good to me.

Now that you have mentioned the Temps, I didn't knew there was a mini-series or a movie. The trailer looks promising. Must be a great movie. Lot's of known faces. Gotta check it out.

Got this LP it's the 80's obviously

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan at all of those artists you said, I mostly like non single songs from lesser known artists, I usually get kind of picky with Funk and Disco.

One artist I'm a HUGE fan of is Edwin Starr (I have posted several songs by him around the forums), I listen to him almost everyday, a song from when he focus on Disco.

I love this mix of that song.

It makes me sad that a lot of people haven't heard his amazing songs other than War and Twenty Five Miles.

I don't why, but to me, the guy who played Paul Williams on that Temptations miniseries looks like Sam Moore from Sam & Dave.

Yes I only know War-(thanks Rush Hour) and H.a.p.p.y. Radio. These are more soul oriented and of course trends changed during the years. I like the 1993 Remix better. It has that Chicago House vibe to it.

I'm not a fan of the bands I mentioned either but I like some of their music. Those are a few I got to know by listening to the mainstream radio or my parents records. You'd be surprised how many disco, funk or boogie from the 70's and 80's had minor or no airplay in the US or in Europe when they were released. They were huge dance tracks in the clubs. I have a collection of 80's boogie-funk, euro-boogie and synth-boogie tracks that were neglected back in the day but get lots of attention by a certain youth of today, especially in the US in California (San Francisco, Santa Ana, Orange Country...) France (Lyon, Marseilles, Paris...) Germany (Frankfurt) or The Netherlands (Amsterdam). There are some who aim to collect the rarest or hard to find records just to prove something (ego booster?) but not because they love the music and want to share. One of the things I hate is when one shares a track or a mix and they and don't post any information about the tracks. I've seen that a lot with french YouTube's. Oh it's unknown funk from Nigeria, South-Africa or Japan so let's keep it that way. WTF? Really? Anyway...

Keep posting. This tread needs to take off. Let's keep the funk alive.

Samples Zapp's More Bounce to the Ounce.

I decided to give Dâm-Funk's Toeachizown album a go, it was long as hell but it was worth it.

I want to know where the hell was I when he released that album.
