Were any of you surprised when there was no mafia?

I get it, the godfather was a good movie. Does everything even partially crime related have to have their fingerprints all over it?

Lool funny sh*t :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Thanks, but seriously. GTA III. Mafia. GTA VC. Mafia. GTA San Andreas, the so called kiddy gangster bullsh*t game. Mafia. GTA IV. Mafia.

This game series has more mafia in it than the COD series has russians, and that's hard to do.

Anyway, there is no real case to be made for the Mafia to play any kind of significant role, or to be included in GTA V. The Mafia's presence and influence in LA is negligible, this has been stated numerous times. LA's criminal underworld is centered around street gangs and drug cartels. Some people just don't like to accept this fact.

Miami, Florida. Similar circumstances with La Cosa Nostra involvement. They had little presence in, Tampa Bay and that was Santo Trafficante (family-crew) who represented mainly by crime money working involvement with the Bonanno's & Santo Jr. had close-tied family relations with (born; Gaetano) - Thomas "Tommy" Lucchese (NYC) families . Likewise the Rizzuto crime family once represented the Bonanno family in Montreal, Canada. That link has since be severed.

They show the (Bonanno family) connection in the Donnie Brasco film, but that film is about as true or spot on as American Gangster (Frank Lucas) film is and even Joe Pistone mentions 90% of Donnie Brasco film got scenes involvement twisted for movie fan pleasure or it would been a dragging on bored film of wise guys sitting around just eating, killing and robbing for petty change.

Los Angeles crime family was never able to stabilise itself after Boss, Jack Dragna (era; 1931-1956) died and with other ethnic groups in the West Coast and Italian presence low (a lot members come from Chicago, NYC, Buffalo and Las Vegas) that the commission (5 NYC Families) don't want to send Italian members or associates out to the West Coast in fear of the ethnic groups seeing a threat as they own most the lucrative fashion rackets (bookmaking, loansharking, drug and gun selling or trafficking) but remaining L.A. crime family members still are controlling porn businesses but moving more into Las Vegas terriotry but that is only through connections with Chicago Outfit and the Buffalo crime family. It's something like 10-20 known members (Un-sure if they Made Man or just associates) of the West Coast (L.A. crime family) since it's 1950-to dated ever declining empire. They got used and abused by the NYC families of the Commission and Chicago Outfit which helped L.A. Crime of Cosa Nostra also crumble.

The Mafia isn't compatible with Los Santos and California as a region for multiple reasons

1. The mafia isn't structurally designed to exploit califnornian resources:

I would see this as one of the various reasons why there is no mafia thriving in Los Santos in game or in Los Angeles in real life. The mafia is based primarily on extortion and racket operations of Union sites and construction operations. The Californian drug trade and weapons trade is at its current height. Hispanic and Cartel organizations have already cultivated a large operation in these regions, with less of a focus on corporatism and subverting capitalist principles like most mafia/organized syndicates participate in. African American and various street gangs act often independently or as the muscles for these higher organizations, along with the Triads establishing a large prescence in these trades. To put it simply, the American Mafia and its economic structure doesn't fit in with the style of northwestern criminality.

2. Ethnic diversity:

The regions where the Mafia thrive the most, tend to be regions like New York/Liberty City because these cities are predominately italian, Russian, Irish, etc. These regions tend to have higher statistics of italian-Americans or those that emigrated from other nations to the U.S. Think about how New York itself has 14.4% of the italian American population, many of which don't count the possible illegal smuggling of italian migrants. The point is that the Mafia has an easier time establishing large connections because of all the other immigrants or those that descend from a specific ethnic bloodline. Let's say that Russo runs a construction site managed by City officials and government funds. His italian heritage will make it easier for the Mafia to establish a racketeering or extortion operation with him. Say Rocco has a pizza parlor that he recently established. The Mafia is going to have an interest in his place as a possible cell or base of operations. To put it simply, Los Santos lacks the large population of migrants or civilians that we usually associate with the mafia.

3. Rivals:

The mafia usually operates from what I have read on a relatively quiet basis suprisingly. They don't desire to enter massive gang wars which would inevitably happen in a very large and divided area like California. The Mafia works as a sneaky set of Syndicates that want to disguise themselves with a professional facade and carry out operations to extort and make money. While many other gangs use nationality and ethnic differences to stir up massive gang wars and conflicts. Example: Aryan Brotherhood and Hispanic Cartel wars. While the mafia does like to pull the same cards to justify many of its actions, these are mostly just moves by the higher ups to indoctrinate the soldiers of the mafia, making them prone to killing on a whim with no intense feelings of remorse or empathy. They essentially are indoctrinated into zombies that serve the hypothetical "family" over their own basic human qualities. To put it simply, the mob recognizes the danger of these potentially ruthless organizations, and wishes to extort and carry out hits as quietly as possible without tearing itself apart quickly.

4. The mafia simply isn't as big as it was

A in real life example would be cases like the Maxi Trials which put away hundreds of criminals for extortion and murder operations carried out. It was effectively one of the largest trials and resulted in a major loss of morale in the mafia. Even Pegorino in GTA 4 refers to the mafia as a "dying game" as well as liberty City organized crime as a whole. This would be apparent in real life too, as the mafia has been declining massively since the 80's. To put it simply, the mafia was replaced and will most likely continue dying out due to smaller more loud organizations taking its place. The mafia would never be big enough to start reclaiming massive operations in new york yet areas where it definitely does not belong.

Nope. And that's what I love about CA. No cheap mafias can take over.

No. The mafia has no relevance to modern California. The lack of focus of relevant organisations like Mexican drug cartels is what surprised me and is a bigger issue. After some time GTA V stops feeling like a GTA game when it switches focus over to the FIB/Merryweather.

It didn't need the mafia, but it shined over cartels like they're nothing. *shrugs*

Mafia I wasn't really surprised to be in the game, but I thought they'd be more drug related stuff and things with the cartels to be fair.  This is one of the things that lacked in V IMO.  Mafia is more of a LC and VC thing rather than a LS thing to be fair.

Pretty much the same thing as everyone else said. The mafia isn't really a thing in California. The closest you'd get would be triads in San Francisco (or Fierro in GTA), but then they're of totally different origin, and though the term "mafia" is broad, we mostly just think of the organised gangs like Cosa Nostra (the Sicilians/Italian-Americans) when the term is used. So no, not surprised we got no mafia-themed stuff.

They decided it would be better for Franklin to do multiple atrociously boring and pointless tow truck missions than have some cool gang/cartel related missions

I definitely didn't like the style of those types of GTA V missions that much. I also didn't like how the story often jumped around between characters. They really should have had two main characters if they wanted to make it work. Or they could have had Trevor and Michael be completely separated from eachother until the end of the game, having Franklin act as the middle man peacemaker in the affair.

I think it could've worked better with 3 of them if there were simply more missions and a longer storyline to flesh out all the characters properly, and if they hadn't made Franklin so boring and lacking in personality. Franklin was the one who suffered the most in that regard, more gang/crime missions for him and seeing more personality and character development in him would have improved the game.

I think it's because in GTA V Rockstar was going for more of a over the top Hollywood movie fantasy simulation rather than an accurate depiction of what the criminal underground is like in modern day California.

The Mexican standoff between the IAA, FIB and Marryweather as well as Blitz Play which was a more action packed version of the opening of the movie Heat comes to mind.

I think unlike previous GTAs V showed a higher class of criminals and their way of doing things instead of focusing on guys who start from the bottom.

That's why I liked Michael De Santa so much. He had it all and was living in paradise but was still miserable and just spent his days drinking, watching old movies and going to a psychiatrist.

Franklin was more of the "classic" GTA protagonist because he started from the bottom and moved up with Michael's help.

Don't think Trevor ever cared about money that much he was just in it for the action.
