Were any of you surprised when there was no mafia?

I thought there would at least be some mob interaction in the game

No not at all. We don't see much of that in California, unless you're talking about the Mexican Mafia.

California is pretty much just drug pins and Cartels rather than mafias.

Doesn't come to me as a surprise. Mafia isn't the only thing when it comes to drugs. The whole California state's more of Cartels involvement, rather than Mafia. Besides, Mafia sounds too old for a modern game anyway.

Mafia no, Lack of South American/Mexican cartels dominating certain areas.. yes. One of the few things that didnt make sense to me.

No I was not surprised, because in real life the Mafia have very little to no presence at all in the criminal underworld of LA or California as a whole. This has been the case for many years, at least since the 1970s. Based on that, a lot of mob interaction in GTA V wouldn't make much sense, and it would look out of place in a modern, LA-based setting. Most of the organized crime in LA and Southern California is centered on Mexican drug cartels, street gangs, outlaw biker gangs, and other criminal groups like Triads, Russian and Armenian Mobs.

I was very surprised at seeing extremely little involvement from Mexican drug cartels and Hispanic street gangs in V. Right now, in LA and Southern California, that is main kind of organized crime going on. Rockstar must have been on crack when writing up their ideas for this stuff. I was also surprised to see very little involvement from the Armenians too, as they are quite prominent in LA gangland.

Nope. I'm glad they weren't there for two reasons. One- mafia is played out and has been done over and over again in movies and games. And two- there is like no mafia here in LA, at least not Italians. The gangs we have here are mostly Mexican, black, and some asian. You don't ever hear of Europeans or Middle Eastern people running sh*t here like they do back east, it just doesn't happen. I'm more surprised that the Mexican cartel wasn't deeply involved with the story, because even though they're more active in border cities like El Paso and San Diego, cartels still have a significant presence in LA, and it would have been interesting to see them plus more Latino gangs.

f*ck Mafia/mobsters. sh*t was in GTA 3, VC, SA, IV, LaD, and TBOGT. We don't need more greasy, pizza eating mobsters

As everyone already said there is no Mafia, or at least not significant influence from it, in LA. Also, Mafia has been in every single GTA game before this one. It was really time to let it rest for a while, sh*t was getting tedious and repetitive.

As others have alluded to, the mob doesn't have much influence in California. But you know what Cali does have? Banks and government corruption. If only V had been about robbing banks and government corruption.

I'm surprised that we didn't get more gang/cartel related crime.

Because the focus of V was never about that stuff. I can't help but feel that adding Franklin as a protagonist and including some missions revolving around that world was simply a move of throwing a bone to the San Andreas/CJ kids, and it was more than enough. In fact, I also can't help but feel if Franklin wasn't added, we may have had a more in depth narrative between Michael and Trevor; but hey-ho, I'm not too bothered about that, and I actually liked Franklin more than I initially thought I would.

We already had a GTA game dedicated to all of that gangbanger crap. Move on.

Didn't take too long to see this from Lucchese in a thread like this. I really don't remember this thread being about having a preference or dislike for gangbangin' in GTA or Franklin. This thread was about why the Mafia played a very small part in GTA V, but yet Lucchese uses it as another opportunity to express his extreme dislike and displeasure of San Andreas and seeing ghetto culture and black street gangs in GTA. Lol, this guy is so predictable, he just keeps on and on with his same ol' repetitive rants about this stuff, but hey Lucchese it's a forum, knock yourself out.

@OG

Actually, darkwar854 asked a question, so I answered it. And where have I ever said I disliked San Andreas? As you well know, I've made it clear numerous times the game is my 3rd favourite GTA to date. Just because I've grown out of rap music and the ilk, does not mean I've grown out of San Andreas. I thought it was an amazing game for its time, and still do.

And you accusing me of "same ol' repetitive rants" is hilariously ironic, given I only post on this forum a few times a week these days, and by contrast all you've done for the past 9 months is pollute this place with nothing but negativity and recycled complaints on what appears to be a daily basis.

But hey, you're no stranger to hypocrisy.

Now, I'm not going to carry on with this pointless off topic exchange, as it won't be long before you start bringing up my childhood and questioning my intellect.

@Coral_City

I don't think you know what racist means, son...

So? Just because it's not the focus of V doesn't mean that it shouldn't be in the game. Did you see how small the ghetto areas are? It's like four streets. The real ghettos in LA are massive! Even if the game goes with the stereotype that LA is all rich people in the hills, it takes away from the immersion of you really being in LA. In GTA SA, you feared walking down the damn street. In V, gangstas don't do crap. You could be wearing balla colors in chamberlain hills, and no one would give a crap. R* didn't focus on the gang life, but they should of at least put more gang related things in the game. (Recruit gang members to ride with you, sell drugs, low rider minigames, better gang wars, etc).

Mafia no, Lack of South American/Mexican cartels dominating certain areas.. yes. One of the few things that didnt make sense to me.

same here; i was hoping for a storyline about an immigrant tied up in human, weapon & drug trafficking across the border. you know, with a protag kinda like Niko who was trying to get away from all that life, fighting to escape it sort of storyline.

even after the first few trailers made it obvious that wasn't going to happen, i figured cartels would be a big part in the game.

overall the gang involvement was a let-down for me, probably because like everybody else i'm comparing this to GTA:SA, not just Central American but all of them. the biker gangs seemed like kissing the butts of TLAD fans - wish they'd kiss the gangwars fans butts too.

still hoping some DLC will introduce that.. one day .. without me spending hundreds of $$ on new console or playing on PC.

at least, with a PC version there's the possibility of fan mods and missions. but why shouldn't the original copy of the game i bought get the love?

Eh, the like and pleasure part doesn't fit in this topic, but everything else does!

You gotta love how perfectly I can fit you into that.

I know I do.

BTW: darkwar854 started the talk of gangs and stuff, not Lucchese ;)

OT: No. Why would anyone expect Mafia presence in California?

Speaking of the mob, there is one in GTA 5 called the Bonelli Mob, but they show up for just one assassination mission. There was also that mob boss' daughter you could save from being buried alive around Paleto Bay, too.

There's been a lot of artistic license with facial hair in GTA's mobs. Look at Sal's mustache and Tommy's 5'oclock shadow.
