It's just been announced. Thoughts?

SteamBoy is the first device that allows to play Steam games on the go," SteamBoy Machine's press release reads, "you will keep playing your favorite games at the bus, the office, the school or the doctor's waiting room.

It's all the news available so far.

Looks nice for a handheld, wonder what will play on it, I can't see myself playing CS:CZ with that.

No, but there are a lot of Steam games that would work really well on a handheld device. So you basically get a new console with a huge game library. And if they make a new model a few years later with higher specs, you won't have to worry about backwards compatibility.

not a smart idea. handhelds don't have a market anymore. look how Vita isn't selling. what's this going to offer that Vita doesn't? iPhones don't let you.

The only thing different here is you can play all of your Steam games. Which is appealing to a lot of people, Vita is just a flop.

Vita flopped, amongst other reasons, for having a weak library of games for some time IMO.

I'm probably not going to get this, as I'd imagine battery life is going to be a big concern, but it has the same major advantage as other "Steam machines" in all likelyhood; an unparalleled library of games. There's plenty of games sitting in my Steam library not being played, that might be suitable for this.

Vita doesn't have enough games for people to justify buying one.

Yeah because the 3DS has all the games. From Mario, to Zelda to Pokemon and etc. It's mainstream as f*ck. The original PSP and Slim were the dominating handheld devices back in the day. Vita literally doesn't have anything apart from Golden Abyss, LBP and Gran Turismo.

Are you kidding? The fact that the DS/DS Lite is the second highest selling console of all time suggests otherwise.

I find this rather intriguing, although admittedly not enough to warrant buying one. I'm sure that there's a few out there, but in an already crowded marketplace, it's easy to see it struggling to tear away gamers from their 3DSs and tablets. (I hate to admit it, but that includes me.)

The Vita is not a flop. It's not COMPLETELY dead yet.

I got one because I know all the Japanese developers will flock to it and all that JRPG goodness will come. Honestly, the Vita is really only a good purchase if you are a giant weeaboo like me like Japanese games, so I can't say it's not a niche console, but I wouldn't call it a flop.

Since JRPG's are almost exclusively Playstation I see little reason to get a Steamboy, I already have my gaming PC for home and on the go I'll just use my Vita and my 3DS.

Here we are, a year later with some news about this. Finally. It's renamed to SMACH Zero: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141284-SteamBoy-Machine-Is-Now-SMACH-Zero-And-Here-Are-Its-Specs

And here are the specs:

- AMD embedded G-Series SoC "Steppe Eagle" with Jaguar-based CPU and GCN-based Radeon graphics

- 4 GB RAM memory

- 32GB internal memory and SD Card Slot

- USB OTG

- 5-inch Touch screen with 720p resolution

- Configurable tactile gamepads

- HDMI video output connection

- Wi-Fi conectivity

- Bluetooth connectivity

- 4G mobile network connectivity (PRO model only)

It doesn't sound too bad, depending on the pricing. There are a lot of older PC titles that might work on this thing and that would make it a pretty attractive device.

Technically, I could play 95% of my Steam games on this. The only games that I couldn't play are those that require more than 4Gb of RAM like The Witcher 3.

Honestly, this is a great little idea. Better than those Steam Machines at any rate. What's the point of a Steam Machine when you could just build a gaming PC? But this, this makes sense if they do it right.

Aren't they still working on the Steam console? Whatever happened to that?

This isn't Valve's doing. It's a third-party piece of hardware using SteamOS.

The "SteamOS" is nothing more than Windows 8/10 with Steam already installed

No, SteamOS is a Linux distro aimed towards gamers who use Steam.
