Why do you think it took rockstar so long to release the PC version?

I was just wondering why it has taken them so long to get a PC version announcement?Don't get me wrong.... I am glad it finally came out! But it does make me wonder.....would we even HAVE a PC version if the sales for it were not also included with the new sales of PS4 and XBox One?

I also wonder if this could be the last PC version for GTA?

The reason I ask, is because Rockstar had been so quiet about a PC version at all and then announce it...in a SONY PS4 Video???

This is definately a new twist in the way they announce GTA for PC.

Long development times due to the PC version being built alongside the last gen versions, as well as the goal of having it fit right in with the PS4 and Xbox One releases. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up, I'd say.

I'm willing to bet there were also general development and technical issues, as well. But hey, its coming now. That's all that matters.

It's a transition to a new generation. I'm sure It's quite rough for all devs.

Technically it didn't really take them long, they do this every time... They bring it out to consoles then a year later (pretty much going to be a year) they release it to PC.

However, I am sure they wanted to have the time to do everything they wanted to do since the beginning, but clearly last gen was really limiting them.. Even if they were stated saying they didn't feel limited lol

They didn't announce it in a Sony video...

Sony announced the PS4 version at their E3 conference using the same trailer. The trailer itself debuted on Rockstar's YouTube channel and announced all 3 versions as the same time.

Xbox One.

HUH? Your post makes no sense.

Are you correcting my spelling or something?

Xbox One delayed all other versions like PS3 delayed EFLC for PC as well.

While not official, it's possible. Just my opinion though.

Oh so you think Microsoft had something to do with keeping them from announcing it? Could be.......

Frankly I hate all of this "exclusive content" crap!

The stupid game should be on all platforms at the same time.

Rockstar's ex-employee John Diaz said in a tweet a long time ago that Rockstar will announce the PC version of the game when the team feels that the game has reached the quality that PC gamers expect from it. I'm certain that GTA V will look superb AND will be atleast as optimized as Max Payne 3 was. Rockstar have learned their lesson with GTA IV and I'm a hundred percent sure they will surprise us with an amazing game that is NOT a port.

Agree, but if you think GTA as an experience, you wouldn't mind the delay at all. For me, GTA is an experince and no longer a video game. Hopefully the PC sales of GTA V is justified and that they can turn Leeds into another PC development studio of Rockstar. I certainly believe they should open a branch in Germany where majority of them are PC gamers and will have more passion for PC gaming or they should just acquire QLOC since QLOC did a really good job at optimizing games for PC.

Because they are so busy with Online and patches, but the main reason is that they are not making just a sh*tty port like GTA IV, they are doing a proper version of GTA V for PC and next-gen, not just a bit improved graphics, but a whole improvement on the map, new effects, higher quality, improved IA, more wildlife, and even new features. I prefer wait 1 year like we were waiting than to have a rushed bad port.

Hopefully the main reason is because they were taking their time to make a competent, optimized port rather than rushing some GTAIV-esque trash out the door. The new consoles probably had something to do with the longer wait as well; they likely wanted to hold off release a bit for interest in the new systems and the installed base of both to increase before releasing.

It better be very well optimized if Rockstar decided to just sit on it for a long time...

PC and PS4 versions were finished by March this year.

They've both been in development for a long time too, PC starting in full force from September 2012 and PS4 version starting from January 2013.

But it's safe to assume they are still improving them, isn't it?

They had to work on the last gen versions to get money. If they were a company like Valve who cares infinitely more about the quality of their games rather than making money (although they obviously care about that too) they would save GTA V for PS4, XONE and PC only. We would already have it by now i'm sure.

Maybe R* want make GTA V a lot better for next-gen and PC, they don't want to be like GTA IV again

What do you mean by that? It's not released yet. They want (and have) to blow our minds like HL2 did. For that they're taking their time and i'll gladly wait for it. Obviously not what Rockstar did with GTA V. It didn't impress me at all. Hope it does in the proper version.

They don't want to spoil something that big like Half-Life is by rushing a pointless sequel. They want to make sure that if they release HL3 it's as shocking as HL2 was back in the day.

The fact that they took so long could be a good thing though.

With GTAIV they made the consoles version, then R*North finished a PC version that simply added higher details and textures, a video editor etc, and they just shipped that. It didn't work out so well, they neglected optimization big time and we all know the result.

This time around things might be different though. They made the 360 and PS3 version like always but at some point in development they probably got access to the final PS4 and Xbone devs kits, and they started porting to those platforms, and that was a great opportunity to also make the PC version alongside. This should mean that this time they have another hardware specification to meet, and that they have to optimize for the new consoles. The PC version should benefit from any optimization they do to the PS4 and Xbone because they are going to have a budget, they are going to make the game perform well in these consoles. So this time it shouldn't be a port like GTAIV were developers just add sliders and dump all the high res textures in the engine and just pray it holds together. This is all pure speculation of course, so we'll have to wait and see.

Honestly? I think it was both Hype + The development time.

They are a business, and they know quite well absence makes the heart grow fonder, in a normal sense, They knew the longer they held

it back the more the hype would build and that when they announced it, their fanbase would explode in excitement.

They weren't wrong, were they? :rol:

This is definately a new twist in the way they announce GTA for PC.

They answered all questions in general terms on July 12 2012, 9:53am and its understandable, because its a huge project. -->

“Why does it take so long for you to develop games when u have so much money and so many staff? It should be months between games not years can someone explain it to me. We live in a consumer society the customer is always right don’t forget that. Yours with anger R Harris”received via Mouthoff
Upsetting you feel this way! It takes us a long time to make games because we take it enormously seriously, and want the game to be everything it can be so that you, our fans, are as entertained and amazed as possible. We are sorry that it sometimes seems to take a long time, but the massive amount of work it takes to imagine, design, build, and populate a digital world is simply staggering, and we are constantly striving to make sure each game surpasses the last one. The games are made up of millions of assorted assets, and built by hundreds of highly talented, highly specialized people, working incredibly hard. We try to work as fast as possible, but given the combinations of cutting edge technology, high resolution graphics and animation, and hundreds of thousands of sound files, all of which have to work perfectly, and be fun and enjoyable to play, it is not surprising the games take a while to make. Even with sequels to existing games, it is important to us that they have a lot of new elements and feel fresh and exciting. We feel it is our duty to make sure the games are as good as we can make them and as innovative as we can make them.
“What is going on with GTAV?”received via Mouthoff
We are very busy working on the game! Everything is going well, but the game is a huge project. We should have more information and some new assets for you soon.
“Why don’t you give us more news?”received via Mouthoff
As we have said before, we have often had long gaps between asset releases on previous games and will continue to do so in the future. We are sorry if you find this frustrating, but please understand, we don’t do this because we ‘don’t care about our fans' 'don’t respect our fans’ 'hate GTA fans etc' – precisely the opposite! We do it because we want to make sure we only release 100% correct information, and because we want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it. The only things we care about are that you enjoy the experience of actually playing the game and that we release accurate information. We just have not been in a position to show more of the game than the trailer and will not be for a while yet. We did, however, manage to sneak a quick screenshot out for you… it’s not much, but we thought it was pretty fun.
If you want you can implement this answer from R* into the Topic.;)

I believe it is because of the New-Gen consoles. And of course, there would have been some technical difficulties which might have consumed some time, but I guess it's more to do with Rockstar's idea of releasing PC version along with PS4, and Xbox One.

It took them so long because they wanted to release it alongside next-gen console versions. They also upgraded graphics. However, the game should sell $40 instead of $60.. right now it's overpriced for a year old game.

i don't see the point in releasing V for next gen now that its on current gen. i mean, its only good for those who do not have V and have a next gen console. or those who are hell bent on having better quality on a console. and thats not many people.

PC release is far better choice. purely for modding. nothing else. it'll carry the GTA name on for another few years at least.

Because IT'S EASY!

Why do you think there are so many "Remastered" games coming out for the PS4/XBO? The games are already made.

Console gamers will gladly pay for the same game twice ($120?) in order to get slightly better graphics. Oh boyyyy.
