Do forum discussions ever really solve debates? They never seem to, At least in a way that might actually mean anything.

From what I've seen, it's usually that a thread will ask for an opinion. So everyone's just putting out opinions till "that one guy" comes along with his snarky comment(s) which some one HAS to respond to, which inevitably sparks a debate.

But with these debates -.-... Winning them is never about having a better argument or reasonable point, it's typically settled by who has the patience to repeat their case enough times till the other side doesn't care to type anything else back. Or other things like demeaning someone or being sensationally witty. (As if it should even be about winning. The priority should be to come to an understanding with both parties)

And even when one side has presented an argument and has victoriously made its case, the other will just recede without having reconsidered a thing, as if to say "well, you won that argument cause of what you said, but I'm still gonna think what I think cause I'm right!" Not to mention the fact that there can be 10 threads arguing the same single topic, and will turn out different ways.

Lets also not forget the threads that intentionally try to start **** with titles like "JETS SUCK! I LIKE GTA IV BETTER! DONT YOU?"

But nothing is more unsettling than when an issue has been "settled" and then some "other guy" reads the OP and like a handful of posts, skips over the other pages and then posts his own two cents, almost always repeating something that has ALREADY BEEN SAID AND DEALT WITH. If a poll is asking for opinions, I guess that's fine. But a question with a Definite answer doesn't need a million confirmations after it's done.

Might I add: Facts are fine, but how do you even explain "arguing opinions" in the first place -.- smh idk but we still do it.

These forum debates have gone on (and will continue to do so) but I'm interested in knowing how many of you have ever been part of a debate, or simply read somethin from a debate that ACTUALLY CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT SOMETHING?

Like, I never see a person go:

-"you know what, maybe I AM an auto aim noob. I'll go try free aim today and challenge myself." or

-"maybe there IS some skill to auto aim, so I'll just stop being a dick by pestering auto aim players to play free aim and go back to enjoying the game."

But of course, I've never done that cause I'm perfect and always right :p .... LOL.

Good luck with this thread ;)

But yeah, once some asshole comes into a thread and can't back down for being wrong, it can get a bit ridiculous.

Inb4 "absolutely nothin'".

Also, forum arguments serve no purpose, they're just fun to watch.

Inb4 "absolutely nothin'".

Say it again.

Most, (if not all) arguments on the internet never get resolved. It's better to look at discussions as boring games rather than attempts to reach agreement. The best you can hope is that someone likes what you're saying.

So is it safe to assume that none of you

have ever been part of a debate, or simply read somethin from a debate that ACTUALLY CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT SOMETHING?

Some topics are just troll magnets

Some are just landmines waiting to be stepped on

Kind of boils down to the topic of the thread

OP - What a useless post...utter waste of bandwidth.

and this thread topic you started right here isn't?

Tonight I clubbed a NPC to death. Ambulance rolls up and the medics come over and one says "Looks like 187 wasn't your lucky number" and they just drive off and leave the victim's corpse on the sidewalk.

I hope I never have to call 911 in LS.

Do forum discussions ever really solve anything? They never seem to, At least in a way that might actually mean anything.

When people have a serious question that someone in the community has an answer for - yes.

But for the most part it's about discussion or sometimes amusement. I'm sure some users have changed the way they do something or the way they think as a result.

Exact quote from that talk you had with your parents when you were young, isn't it?

It's tricky because there has been so many topics covered or repeated since the release.

The first time I changed my mind due to a forum post was when online was first released. I was being bitchy, and critical and was angry at Rockstar, and another user pointed out to me that given their reputation and what they offer - cut them some slack. Totally switched my opinion at the time - I just hadn't thought about it like that before.

That one statement right there was worth writing all of that in the OP.

Theres still hope.

I noticed that the OP already implicitly states that forums are for discussing and debating, but I'll repeat that anyway.

Fixed.

i generally stop talking once i think the other person isn't worth it. in fact i consider a lack of response "winning". but i am probably alone.

I try to do that, but I usually wind up coming back two it 2 or 3 times more before stopping.

But then, if I say something or ask a question, and then they type a response that reads as if they didn't read what I said at all, or ignore my question, I'm usually done right there.
