GTA: Online on PC... 16? 32? 64 players? More?

Recommended Posts

I am really hoping for at least 64 players.

But I am also hoping that the online server picking is a lot more user friendly on PC.

I want to be able to pick whether I want to go into a normal server, a Roleplay server, a Friendly server, a griefing server, a passive only server, a tank only server etc etc.

What makes you think that they will change the 16 player concept at all?

I am not too sure about that.

Also don't forget that mission playercount limits and open world playercount limits are seperated in GTA Online. So even if they changed the maximum open world playercount to 64, all the current races are limited to 16 players maximum, some are even limited to 4.

Thinking about it furtherly nullifies the anticipation of 64 players in freeroam mode, as that means at least 15-20 tanks per session.

Pc should be able to support hundreds like all the other MMO's.

Other MMOs don't have thousands of NPCs in all kinds of vehicles going around the giant map.

You can't compare GTAO to any other game (especially not Battlefield) because this game needs to sync enormous all the time between all players in the session.

However, they could increase players in sessions with disabled NPCs (like races with no traffic, deathmatches, etc).

APB Had 100 players, and up to 2 or 300 NPC's running round constantly plus hundreds of cars driving constantly.

GTA5 is an update of APB.

I think they will allow us to have up to 100 players per game. If APB cant do it then why not GTA? Also they were made kinda by the same company.

Have you ever played APB actually? Then you would notice that everything is handled serverside (that's why cars are responding with a delay). That's not how GTAO is made (thankfully), so clients needs to be synchronised between eachother all the time (since every client has it's own "brain").

Oh great -.- can't wait to see 32-63 twankers all in one session, all running around trying to kill the one rank 5 guy who still hasn't figured out what's going on.

I would love hundreds of players, if they could effectively fix the passive system, I don't understand why they can't have a setting for players wanting to pvp and those that don't, those that don't cannot be hurt...

Fix what? Passive mode works just fine. And they DO have something set aside for those who don't want PvP.

It's called an invite only/closed session...

64.

with 16/32 whole map will feel empty.

just like playing SAMP with 30 people... world just feels empty.

San Andreas's map was huge, of course 16-32 would feel empty.

In relation, the GTA V map is FAR bigger than the GTA SA map. So the map size is NOT the reason for that feeling of emptiness.

The main reasons are NPCs + traffic. They give you the impression of not being alone. Another thing is, in GTA V, you usually respawn near your death area. In GTA SA:MP you usually respawn at a random or strictly specified location but almost NEVER near the place where you died (speaking of the majority of freeroam servers)

Other reasons are:

- more intense communication system in GTA V (voicechat), that always keeps you aware that you are not alone

- POPUPS that somebody has done anything rather than one small unobtrusive kill table

- far more effective to kill somebody with non-superheavy weapons (compare SA:MP sniper vs GTA V sniper for example)

All these things give you the impression that GTA SA:MP feels far more boring with the same amount of players on a smaller map, compared to GTA V.

64? Damn, imagine the chaos :D

Imagine the timeouts.

There's no central server that your system uploads its data to and is then redistributed to the other systems in the session. Each session consists of your system forming independent links with each other session.

Even with increased resources to deal with the additional overhead of processing all those links to the otehr consoles, you're still dealing with lag on your connection and everyone elses'. Ever notice how a 16 player race won't ever start without shedding 2-5 users (or more)?
