I have some rough numbers for you aboub the number of copies sold on steam.

 

Ok, so Cities: Skylines was launched recently to a great succes accoirding to their developers selling 250.000 copies on its first day and placing the game on N°1 on the steam top sellers list.

 

But this game isnt steam exclusive to steam since it can be bought from different stores, BUT all the copies activate on steam, since its a steamworks game.

 

Anyway, im asuming that at least 200.000 of those copies were sold on steam, because its steam.

 

GTA V has been selling since the 16th of january, i think, thats 58 days to today. It has never left the top 10 list, appart from a few minutes, and its been n°1 for at least 10 of those 58 days, asuming that every time its n°1 means 200.000 then:

 

10 x 200.000 = 2.000.000 already

 

its been on the top 10 since that day so i will trow another 2.000.000 for that.

 

and at this point is probably closing on 5.000.000 and considering that there are almost 80.000.000 steam active accounts dosent sound so crazy, and off course thats only on steam. all the others stores sell the Rockstar warehouse ver.

 

Anyway, like i said take this with a big BIG grain of salt.

 

So what do you guys think? is GTA V the best selling steam game of 2015 and is not even out?

Those GTA V numbers are exaggerated and should be taken with bigger grain of salt than big BIG grain of salt.

I don't know about the number of copies sold on Steam, but one thing is guaranteed, if the game comes well optimized and the Online working properly on day one, you can be sure that sales will increase dramatically, because many people these days don't pre-order games anymore (because of bad past experiences), especially with GTA V which was delayed several times.

I won't be surprised, if GTA V has managed to stay on the Steam Best Seller's list ever since it was available for purchase, then clearly a lot copies have been sold (and some cancelled/refunded due to the delay).

 

Expect like, at least near a million or 2 I'd say. Who knows. There are retail copies that aren't even factored in as well, w00t.

"Active" according to Valve and actual "Active" are two different things. Active to Valve means an account used in the past month that has at least one purchase on it (seeing as DOTA2 and TF2 items count as purchases, it's really difficult to know what are dupes, fakes, scam accounts, etc, related to these zones. The tracker on the other hands shows active gamers on Steam actually PLAYING games, which often sticks around 9 to 11 million on average nothing special days. This number bumps up more around holiday seasons and steam sale seasons, or if a really special event type game is launching, which we could assume GTAV might be, it managed to sell 10 Million on Current Gen after all with it's tiny in comparison install base compared to PC. Would be nice to see the daily numbers blast up when GTAV eventually does come out, you PC guys have gotta show your love.

It is also worth noting that people do not play 24 hours a day or every day in a week.

If you take those things into consideration real active accounts shouldn't be anywhere far from 60 million mark.

2013- GTA for Last Gen 1 billions ( no words about NG or PC version )

2014- GTA for Current Gen 10 millions ( V for PC in 2015 )

2015- GTA for PC and top seller in steam ( V for PC )

2016 - new Rockstar game
