Grand Theft Auto IV for PC Delayed; Specs Released

November 3rd, 2008

Published at 11:39 AM PST

Sad and good news today coming from Rockstar. It seems Amazon and Gamestop were right. The highly anticipated PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV has been delayed shortly. The new release date is now December 2, 2008. The good news? Rockstar has released the official system requirements for Grand Theft Auto IV.

Minimum System Requirements

  • OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
  • Memory: 1.5GB
  • 16GB Free Hard Drive Space
  • Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

Recommended System Requirements

  • OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1Ghz
  • Memory: 2 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista)
  • 18 GB Free Hard Drive Space
  • Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 / 512MB ATI 3870

It seems the specs that were posted on the Games for Windows website a couple of months ago weren't too far off.

What we gonna do if they delay the game again ?

as said like 29318231723y1928312312312831283 times, it's a little too far in to delay now

when was the original planned date for gta 4?

Stop being so paranoid. This week we're getting all the info with a possible trailer. If not, then we're getting the trailer next week.

But the news are coming 100% along with Steam pre-orders.

What do you guys think about the release date on Steam? Do you really think they will delay the release date on Steam just to make people buy physical copies?

TBH, these days, physical copies just don't make as much sense, everything is digital these days and Steam is a great platform to download PC games from, so it would be silly of R* to hold back the Steam version...

Publishers & devs still release PC games on physical mediums because people still buy them. The reason people still buy them is because a lot of people in various territories have bandwidth caps thanks to greedy ISP's and they don't like downloading 50GB of data for every new release. So the physical copy does make sense because there will be a good deal of people who will buy them anyway. And it's not like Steam is truly necessary anyway. What will you miss out on, achievements? Lol who gives a sh*t.

so this announcement was made just over 2 weeks before planned release and delayed by like 2 weeks or so?

eh I'd say they still had to wait for under a year whereas we didn't so a delay shouldn't happen really

I hope that it is true that it will be 64-bit only.

If there is any 32-bit libraries then that would be no different than taking a Bugatti Veyron and giving it a Lada gearbox.

If it is only 64-bit then finally we will be able to run this GTA with other apps (ie a browser) running in the background without sudden stutters like we often see in GTA IV.

I would like to utilise all 16GB of my system RAM and 2GB of GPU memory without any 32-bit limits restricting the overall performance, and hopefully that will remove the pop-in bugs that IV often suffered from.

What if I told you that games can have 32bit AND 64bit binaries?

I guess after playing Crysis 1 in 64-bit & 32-bit and experiencing how badly 64-bit was optimised, I'd rather just see a game which was developed with only 64-bit in mind...

It doesn't work like that, barelly any game utilize 6GB of RAM. vRAM have nothing to do with x64 or x86 system.

Admittedly I'm no expert on this subject.

But when you look at how CPU intensive GTAIV was, I'd assume that keeping more data in system memory rather than clearing it & loading it back into memory continuously would reduce the overall CPU usage, and as a result perform better overall.

And also GTAIV was known to suffer from a memory leak, so if GTAV was too, at least it would take longer for it to fill up your system memory...

You missed the point of the first link and didn't read what I said on the second. :p

First link is probably where some V stuff is located, second link will no longer be 404 as soon as a manual appears.

If you change the numbers to something that's available it will still say 403 forbidden.

Here's batman arkham asylum for instance

Everything is going to show forbidden, the point was to show something exists on the Steam servers. :p It was a rhetorical dreamy "I wish someone could hack this".

They make more $ per direct sale than they do on Steam since Valve takes a cut on every sale.

Well, tbh, the physical copies cost them money to manufacture & ship so, the Steam copy will make about the same amount of profit.

Not really. Rockstar self-publishes their physical media and its not expensive to mass produce things at the #s Rockstar do. In comparison, Valve will take roughly 20-30% of EVERY digital copy sold. Are you seriously making the argument that it costs 30% of retail to manufacture the physical? Its more like 5-8% per copy sold. There's no other reason why they hold off so long on the Steam pre-order. If the profit margin was the same, it'd have served them well to launch Steam pre-orders as early as possible, especially being that its launching relatively close to the holidays where people were itching to spend money on Steam. Instead, they mass produce the physical and sell as many of those as possible until the latest possible date. Very few companies will produce even 50% of what Rockstar will of this game at the physical level and Take Two are notorious for it. Rockstar make a lot more profit on the physical versions they sell than digital sold by Valve. Why do you think games like Elite Dangerous are not on Steam? Direct sale is always going to make more money. There's no middle man and the manufacturing costs pay for themselves after a certain amount sold. This will be the #1 PC game seller this year both physical and digital almost certainly.

If there's an LastGen mode, which isn't quite confirmed yet, there's bound to be a 32 bit

This worries me:

http://www.rockstargames.com/careers/position/4a880d65/rockstar-nyc

They are looking for a trailer editor....

Why would that worry you? Any trailer for GTA PC is likely already done, and undoubtedly they have more than one person on staff capable of it. They make other games too y'know lol.

I know and that is exactly what i said regarding the development of the game but a year or 2 ago we also had the same job advert for a PC Game Developer, idk so close to the release everything around this game seems to worry me, don't want a delay XD.

Just stop worrying. Its not going to happen 2 weeks before launch. I can't name 1 game in the last 2 years that its happened to. Its too far into the cycle now to think it. Its coming the 27th.
