Every time something gets necrod on this forum and I remember when the thread was fresh, I feel older and older.

 

We're not getting map expansions with V because Rockstar is way too late in the game to make real money off of it, and they can sit cushy on their Shark Cards and bi-monthly updates piling the same map with more clutter.

 

VI, maybe we'll get something, but I'll eat a live fish if we get a map expansion for V.

As for you, provided you're responding to me, no, they're not done with the online, but they're not going to expand in such a large scale on an engine like this. They've got plenty of money doing what they're already doing, and are likely going to use that to expand the online platform with the release of the next game. The GTA V version of GTAO is tired and filled with people who'd be able to buy everything up in a snap, and the player base is slowly declining further and further, coming back in lazy little spurts with every update or so, but never back to an amount worth boasting. It'd be a waste of money for them to actually take the time to develop new assets and blend them into the game world that they intended to include only Los Santos.

But back on topic.

While I see your point on that I have to disagree as while these updates do generate them money via Shark Cards not all of the users buy it(I only bought shark cards like twice and thats it).

On the other hand a map expansion which would be an actual DLC and not an update would make them more money since all of the users would need to purchase it if they want to expirience the content.It may split the community but that wouldn't a problem.(to be honest its already split in multiple ways)

 

So honestly speaking a 20-40$ DLC would make sense.

I understand the anger here, but I believe much of it is misguided. This thread is only going to become a shell of its former self if we continue down this path.

 

While it is true we haven't received any information regarding new maps for GTA Online, that doesn't necessarily mean it's out of the works and is "cut". There's still an opportunity for Rockstar to take this back and breathe in more life to Online. Holding off these assets for the "next" iteration of GTA Online (which will never exist) makes no sense financially, due to Online's extreme financial success. Not only would this divide the playerbase if they were to create a "new" GTA Online, but it would also prove to be much less profitable due to players being abandoned for the next game.

 

This is absolutely why the whole "GTA Online 2" scenario would be a commercial failure. Online doesn't need a sequel, but rather, needs its currently existing world to be fleshed out more. Finance & Felony was a step in the right direction, as was Executives & Other Criminals which came months before it. If Rockstar were to simply cut off support altogether for a "new" entry, this would alienate everyone involved and would cause too much damage to Online.

 

Do I think how Rockstar has treated Online has flaws? Of course. They should've been much more transparent with their planned content releases throughout these few years. But should they abandon Online? Absolutely not.

 

Online has plenty of potential, and it's up to Rockstar to fulfill that goal. Complaining and creating petty arguments does no good here, since this is supposed to be a forum for discussion, especially for a thread that's amassed this much community speculation. This thread when it first started was rich with ideas, but now it's turned into a pessimistic "hate zone" for Rockstar and Online.

 

I understand you guys are upset, but let's at least give this subject more time, or at the very least; take the arguments to PM.

Considering how much amazing content was either planned or already implemented in GTA Online (but then "conveniently" removed before release), makes me wonder just how many years of life R* intends for GTA Online (and I suspect they're doing it on a "play by ear" basis). Naturally, as long as there's interest and they're making money, they'll keep updating it... with just enough bigger and better content to try and bring back players who left long ago due to lack of interest (~8 million players at any one time is a lot, but still a fraction of the total ~33 million who own the game). I have nearly 200 friends, but only ~10 are online at any time; even with time zone differences and work schedules, etc. there should be more online than that...

 

As is true with all programming--esp. code the size of GTA Online--at some point, the layers of unresolved bugs, glitch workarounds, and patches on top of patches begin to eat away at the code's stability/reliability, as old code limits future development and better ways of implementing things that weren't thought of back then... which makes me think there might be a partial or complete rewrite at some point in the future. Not necessarily a "GTA Online 2", but perhaps enough to improve anti-cheat measures, remove outdated code from 2013 written to accommodate the hardware limitations of the PS3 and XBox 360, and implement much-needed changes to take advantage of the new hardware and capabilities of the PS4, XBox One, and PC.

 

Anywho, I'd love to see ANY map additions and expansions--and if SoftSecrets is right (only time will tell)--next year may be "it" in a big way. But as great as map expansions are, they still can't hold player interest for the long-term if the core game play isn't there--and this is what's really lacking. The large swath of free roam depth that appeared to exist in GTA Online's beta days needs to see the light of day much sooner than later... New maps the size of Los Santos are great, but game play itself can thrive even without it (e.g. Counter-Strike: Source is still one of the most popular games out there, despite the fact that it's ancient in terms of graphics, map sizes, etc.--but it has compelling game play).

 

If R* takes the time to add much-needed game play balance, improve combat mechanics (esp. in FP), open building interiors, stop relying on animations (e.g. using real elevators inside of buildings) for so much content, etc.--which feels very cheap in an open world you're supposed to be exploring---they have the potential for some mind-boggling game play on top of what's already fun about the best open world game out there.

I think the pessimism from the folks can be a little bit excused and justified, no? Even some mods in the next DLC thread said a DLC map expansion was never happening some years ago. NOBODY was believing they were ever doing it after so long.

 

Also y'all were talking about Liberty City, Vice City and San Fierro like R* was ever going to do those as possible map expansions for current gen, not a tiny ass island that stretch for about 3 kilometers at best, LOL.
