i think crazyray is one of the very few realistic ppl in this thread

why would rockstar add new territory to this game instead of making a new title

Cheaper to produce than a new title.

No sh*t, a new map would be cheaper to produce than a new map with a whole Story Mode AND Online game...just like it's cheaper to drain the oil from your car and fill it with vegetable oil, but it's not going to give you a better end-result...

...in other words, it's cheaper to make half a game, but it's not going to be as profitable...

Would help fill the gap until the next GTA.

This IS the gap until the next GTA, the biggest gap between games was 4 years, before that, it was always 2-3 years...and we're halfway to 3...so what you're proposing is to HALT the progress of GTA 6, and make a new map so that the gap becomes even greater until GTA 6...because they ARE NOT going to release a new map within a year of GTA 6's release, that's hype and speculation time

They make a load of money from shark card sales so attracting more people back to online with a major DLC = win for R*

It's called heists, which will be out soon...

-Rockstar Games, October 2013

DLC was supposed to already be here, what game goes 1.5 years without DLC? The only games I've played with many DLCs were the Fallout games and you didn't have to wait half that long for a DLC

It would be produced alongside a new title, not instead of one.

THIS makes the least sense out of everything you have said...

If it's cheaper, why would it be produced alongside a new title?

How would a map produced alongside a new title fill the gap between titles??

By that logic, obviously, a map isn't coming

...so like I said, we're waiting for heists and Story Mode (and potentially Online additions) DLC

I reckon it will be christmas 2016 at the earliest before we see another GTA game. Heists are out 'soon'. What next? That's quite a gap to keep people interested in GTA Online until the next game appears.

Of course they'd release something within a year of a new game coming out. Some franchises come out with new games every year.

Why would they have bothered doing a PS4/XB1/PC version of GTA V alongside a new game, instead of putting all of their effort into making GTA 6 come out sooner? It's because the amount of money they make from it is worth the investment of developing it. It also gives the developers some practice with the new hardware.

Rockstar's original intent for GTA Online was to be able to expand it with other areas and I still think this will happen at some point before GTA 6 comes around.

I still don't see how people can't get it through their thick head that heists=/=new locations.

Rockstar have added new areas in past games and are minorly doing it in V, they have never done heists in an online game such as GTA before, that is a good reason for them being delayed so much.

Or they could've just delayed them to maximize profits, either way you can't compare them to map additions.

Christmas 2016 falls in line with a probable release date...

People were still playing GTA IV multiplayer when GTA V came out

Yeah, they're called sports games, minor changes and roster updates every year...but what does that have to do with a real game??

The truth is so that they can sell the same game again, and it will likely give it an extended lifespan as people upgrade to the current systems...and you can have a game come out too soon, it reduces demand...like in the sports games I mentioned earlier, the only people who buy Madden/NBA 2K/etc. every year are the die-hards

No, it was to have an online multiplayer game, obviously, because that's what we have...

So Call Of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and Battlefield are all sports games? Even Need For Speed too but they're skipping a year.

>No, it was to have an online multiplayer game, obviously, because that's what we have...

Sure, but this isn't any multiplayer game that lasts a year. This multiplayer game will keep expanding and continue to evolve over the years, maybe become its own standalone game that's not included in a future title. In fact, it already is. Only thing is that it runs on the V engine and is included in V.

As mentioned in another post, there are other games which come out an an almost annual basis, apart from just sports games. My point being that they would release major DLC for GTA Online within a year of a new GTA coming out.

If you check some of the articles from around the time that GTA was launching, Rockstar did day that they evisanged GTA online as a place that would one day contain all of the locations that they had made as well any new ones made in future. Whether they are still planning to do that is anyone's guess and depends on how successful GTA Online has been. I know they do make a good profit from GTA Online on the back of microtransactions.

I'm not privy to the inner workings of R* but I expect that they will have a number of software teams working on different projects. One of these teams will be supporting GTA Online with fixes and new DLC content. Who's to say they didn't start working on a new map before the game came out? I'm sure that the hassles with developing Heists will have put back other plans they had for Online.

This isn't to say that they would be stopping development of anything else in order to create content for GTAO. They already have people working on the next GTA and Red Dead Redemption games, as well as any other projects they are looking at.

At the end of the day, it is all speculation and we have different opinions on how things will play out. I guess we'll see what happens when it happens.

Fun game to play. It is possible to extend the map but it won't be free. The Midnight club LA DLC was $40-45. It was really half a game. came with new cars, music , missions, characters, car mods, and new map.

Why do some people come in here to just be negative? This is a thread to have a fun time speculating on the topic at hand.

Anyway, I truly believe we will get at least 1 map addition. The most likely map being Liberty City for obvious reasons. But I personally want Las Venturas, I spent endless hours there in San Andreas. I wouldbe stoked to see Las Venturas remade in the HD univers.

Never mind this interview with The Benz prior to the release of GTA V.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/423020/gta-v-interview-rockstar-north-president-leslie-The Benz-on-gta-online/

What scope have you got for expanding beyond the locations we're seeing already?

Well, one thing we've toyed with - and we've talked about this before, so it isn't a spoiler - is (the ambition) to grow this world until it's the world. We're just going to add on new things to it, new places all the time. We've set this up so there are no limitations. The only limitation is the size of the disc and how much memory we've got. We could, if we wanted, simulate the entire world, different countries, whatever. Whether we do that or not... But we've got a bunch of old stuff that we're toying with using.

Yeah, we've all seen this, it's been referenced many, many times...only that it says NOTHING, absolutely nothing...the game is going on 1.5 years old and any longer fits into the interval of a brand new GTA game...

"Ambition" doesn't mean a thing, do you really think that they could really make 20GB models of every world city??

...and for a game on a (new) console that will have a lifespan of 10 years

"Limitation" - discussing space on a disc that's already complete

The part about "no limitations" is just laughable

Also, "new places" doesn't mean new cities/maps

Well I don't see the naysayers with any article to back up their claims. All I have heard is arguments from personal incredulity, which is no proof.

The article I posted, at least proves Rockstar has intention to expand the GTA Online. I don't understand why people feel the need to be negative for the sake of being negative.

It will be interesting to see what happens if/when GTA VI appears. It's currently rumoured to be back to Vice City, so I wonder if GTA Online will get that as an area in addition to what we already have or if R* will just bin off the current GTAO and start a new one based on the new location?

I guess it depends on how different the tech is between this game and the next.

Nowadays I really doubt Rockstar would not continue to use the Los Santos map in some form or another in the ongoing future of the series at large.

I dont think people can grasp the idea that a future gta title like 6 or 7 could release with the same gtaonline access. New stories and characters, campaigns etc. But the online portion could be the one they have already built. Why scrap it and start fresh??

To naysayers like Ray how much more could profits be maximized then if they put out a new game with the same old online attached? I would imagine a ton more profits then releasing a new game with new online.

Thats where the ever expanding world comment comes from. There is no need to ever build another online world, just new cities/maps to go play on. So gta6 could release in say vice city. The sp campain takes place in VC. VC is added as a new location to gtaonline. VC can be reached via airplane/airport or by sea with boats to los santos.

Nothing else makes more sense from a profitability standpoint.

keep in mind, that the aspect of being "new map" mostly comes to terrain and buildings. Rockstar have managed to gather tons of objects that are ready to being put on the map. Also, they can easly let the players to the most of the work when it comes to the missions thanks to Content Creator. So it wont take them as much time as it took to create Los Santos and Online features.

Excellent points. Reminds me of Everquest Next which is an mmo made by Sony currently in development. This development is called Everquest Landmark, almost like an alpha stage of the game. The players are actually building the map/world along with developers. Obviously all player creations wont make the final game ie the removal of d!ck statues and such, but they plan on using the best player creations in the final game.

So there is a precedent for precisely what you suggested when people try to put that idea down, its feasible and possible.

Rockstar would be misguided not to expand V's map. I'd imagine if they set the price for the map DLC to let's say $10, multiply that over 20 million players downloading it, that would be $200,000,000 for them.

Edit; Fixed calculation.

actually it would be $200.000.000 or 200 million.

probably 400 million as add ons of this size will be $20+ I think.

also cashcards will be bought by players because of the new content. :-) so easily 500 million for them in the first month after release of the add on...

Now that I recalculate it it is. Still, that kind of money would be a bounty for Rockstar.

If they are adding a new map near future they have to do a storymode aswell.

I wonder if that is why they are taking so long on Story DLC. They could be working on it concurrently.

R* has already stated a few times that after a GTA game is completed they starting on another project. So sure, probably they are doing something "don't include the heist update that doesn't count"

It would be kinda cool to see Niko return with the Liberty City map add-on. Like you could travel there as Franklin and work for a powerful Niko. I'm very much dreaming but it would be epic.

Yeah that would be awesome, its just that from memory the voice actor for Niko fell out with R* due to reasons of payment.

Due to this getting him to return would be pretty difficult.

I wanna play in the red dead redemption world. Its just a game, doesn't have to be realistic. It would be cool if they add a time machine somewhere on the map. You would spawn in the old west and work for Jim Marshton. Shoot some cowboys, steal their women and hop in my cheetah.

Would be awesome but R* already said in last Q&A that Niko can be dead or alive, they are not interested to bring a playable protagonist back, they rather try something new. But maybe it can be someone you do mission for.

i think this was said a few pages back but i doubt we will see gta 6 for a long time, i would guess about 10 years

if they release new titles like gta v: las venturas, they can save a ton of money on music licensing and other things, while still being able to create a new story, new map, new characters, everything else a new gta game would have. so it'd be a lot more likely to see large and expensive dlcs or new titles under the heading "gta v:" than see a brand new game.
