The Snipe

From time to time, the Karin Snipe gets talked about around here and in other GTA circles. Is it real? Is it a hoax? I can't say for sure, although I suspect it's more likely a hoax than real.

However, what I do know for a fact is that the "snipe" is a real animal. It's a kind of bird. It has good natural camouflage, so it's hard to see on the ground, and it has an erratic flight behavior, which makes it hard to shoot in the air. In fact, this animal, and the difficulty in both finding and shooting it, is the basis of the word "sniper".

When I was younger, I thought the snipe was a fictitious animal, something used by older, more experienced campers to send kids off on a wild hunt for something that wasn't really there. Then one day I was reading Maryland's hunting laws handbook, and one of the animals listed was the snipe. I figured nobody in the government had enough sense of humor to write in something as a gag like that, so I looked it up, and sure enough, snipes are real.

Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

A snipe is any of about 25 wading bird species in three genera in the family Scolopacidae. They are characterized by a very long, slender bill and crypsis plumage. The Gallinago snipes have a nearly worldwide distribution, the Lymnocryptes Jack Snipe is restricted to Asia and Europe and the Coenocorypha snipes are found only in the Outlying Islands of New Zealand. The three species of painted snipe are not closely related to the typical snipes, and are placed in their own family, the Rostratulidae.

Also...

Camouflage may enable snipe to remain undetected by hunters in marshland. If the snipe flies, hunters have difficulty estimating a correct aiming lead for the bird's erratic flight pattern. The difficulties involved in hunting snipe gave rise to the term sniper, referring to a skilled anti-personnel military sharpshooter.

"Going on a snipe hunt" is a phrase suggesting a fool's errand, or an impossible task. It is often used as a practical joke upon campers, and those unfamiliar with hunting, by those more experienced.

I can't see how you can say that It's a hoax when there is picture proof that the Karin Snipe obviously exists :

Perhaps, but apparently we don't all know the difference between "no" and "know".

In any event, we may know how to use Wikipedia, but it doesn't always occur to everyone to look up every little thing they hear, read, think they know, or wonder about.

My point in posting this thread was that after reading some of the discussions here (and other places) about the Karin Snipe, it seemed to me that a lot of people were under the false impression that the snipe is completely fictitious. A snipe hunt is indeed a fool's errand, but not because snipes don't exist. It's just extremely unlikely that a bunch of kids would actually be able to find and capture one, even in an area where they're common.

So this is for the people that have said things to the effect that the Karin Snipe is just as fake as the bird it's named after.

Really don't get what the Snipe fuss is about, when Snipe XS is obviously a superior car.

snipe hunt

n.
1. An elaborate practical joke in which an unsuspecting person takes part in a bogus hunt for a snipe, typically being left alone in the dark with instructions not to move until the snipe appears.
2. A futile search or endeavor.

welcome to the 90's!

The real disappointment is a total lack of snipe upgrades at LSC, not to mention horrible spawn patterns

I found a Snipe XF once but it was blown up by an adder online. It's really rare and I'm on the hunt for another one. The performance is great, but as stated earlier it's lack of customization bothers me. Overall great car.

The "Snipe" is just a reference to an extreme bodykit modification available for the Karin Intruder in the game files. It's unlockable theoretically but no one has been able to do it (possibly because it involves using the jet pack which no one else has unlocked either).
