jmp909
Hi I'm just looking at buying a new GTX780... http://www.dabs.com/products/best-value-palit-geforce-gtx-780-6gb-gddr5-pci-e-3-0-hdmi-jetstream-9GG7.html?src=15 I was just wondering how the 6GB might benefit a single screen setup (currently either 1080p monitor, tv or projector) over a 3GB faster card at about the same price : http://www.dabs.com/products/evga-geforce-gtx-780-993mhz-3gb-pci-express-3-0-hdmi-acx-classifi-8Y0S.html Does the extra memory help performance when using texture mods for instance? (Not just for GTA but other moddable games too like Skyrim) Also I'm quite interested in Oculus Rift...so any trade off of visuals vs performance is going to make a noticeable difference on the immersion either way. Again would there be any benefits of the 6GB card at all in terms of visual fidelity? Can having the extra memory actually boost framerate performance in anyway (less need to swap memory?) or is that performance down to clock speeds in the end.. Thanks for any info... I have no idea how these things work technically! Regards J Edited May 17, 2014 by jmp909
Marc79
1080p, 6GB Vram, pointless. 4K, 6GB Vram, makes sense.
jmp909
so if i'm downsampling from higher resolutions to 1080 for instance, then possibly the 6GB starts becoming useful? Edited May 18, 2014 by jmp909
yoječ
Theoretically yes.
jmp909
looking at 780 performance tests, i probably wouldn't want to be going above 2560x1440 on a single card. in fact looking at some Skyrim ENB's they appear to be cutting down the framerate to ~35fps @ 1440p anyway. I'd rather have the performance of 1080p. With something vanilla like Watch Dogs (so without ENB and texture mods) even if i run at 1440, I doubt it's been built to hit over 3GB VRAM? (Ultra specs: Intel Core i7-4770K with a GeForce 780) So I don't know if any games at the moment will actually push the 780 past 3GB that's playable at 45+ fps? I was tempted to go for the 6GB but I likely wouldn't buy another for SLI until they were half the price of what they are now.. and I believe they keep their value for quite a while... by then there might be better options anyway.? hmm. Marc79
Battlefield 4 Ultra Preset (AA x4), 1440p, I've seen 2.4GB vram being allocated avg. 50fps+ Crysis 3 system spec: Very High, everything Very High, with FXAA, 1440p, ~45fps+ even less vram allocated. jmp909
and that's on a Ti Classified? looks like i'll be sticking with 1080p for a bit. i didn't expext these results though... maybe it's picking up a Ti version by accident http://versus.com/en/zotac-gtx-780-amp-edition-vs-palit-geforce-gtx-780-jetstream Palit Jetstream vs Zotac AMP! jmp909
I went with a MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4GB in the end. I'm still killing Skyrim down to 30fps with ENB's though Actually I thought I'd be able to run Assassin's Creed III at 1080p60 on Ultra but it's not able to keep up the framerate. My system's not that optimized though and my i7-2700 is probably a bit old now. thanks for the comments. j
Zeta87
my i7-2700 is probably a bit old now. The Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P (rev 1.0) is great for overclocking and you can easily overclock that i7 2700K; probably you just need an aftermarket CPU cooler and then you'll be ok overclocking your processor and maybe you'll get an increased performance. DaBOSS54320
The 6GB should also help with loading modded vehicle models, if you're into that.
