Floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia

(Reuters) - The heaviest rains and floods in the past 120 years hit Bosnia and Serbia this week, killing three people, cutting off electricity and leaving several towns and villages isolated.

The three casualties, one of them a firefighter on a rescue mission, drowned in Serbia. The country declared a state of emergency in 18 towns and cities, including the capital, Belgrade.

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Thursday he would declare an emergency for the whole country at 1100 GMT.

"This is the greatest flooding disaster ever. Not only in the past 100 years; this has never happened in Serbia's history," Vucic told a news conference. "More rain fell in one day than in four months."

In Bosnia, army helicopters evacuated dozens of people stranded in their homes in the central town of Maglaj, where the Bosna river swelled to record levels, reaching the first floors of apartment buildings.

Special police were trying to reach the northern Bosnian town of Doboj, which was cut off from the rest of the country after all major roads out were flooded.

The Bosnian government ordered the defense ministry to use troops to help thousands of civilians whose homes were engulfed by water, particularly in the central and eastern regions.

"This is the worst rainfall in Bosnia since 1894, when weather measurements started to be recorded," said Zeljko Majstorovic, a Sarajevo meteorologist. He said the rain, which began on Tuesday, would continue until the end of the week.

Many roads were deluged and towns and villages completely cut off. Schools were closed across both countries.

Serbian Energy Minister Aleksandar Antic said power supplies were cut to around 100,000 households, mostly in central Serbia.

Serbia's power company, Elektroprivreda Srbije, said it had mobilized teams to monitor the situation on the ground. Flooding had disrupted production in two coal mines supplying major thermal plants, the company said.

A major highway from Belgrade to Macedonia and Bulgaria was flooded and the traffic interrupted. The main south-bound railway line to Montenegro's port of Bar was also closed down.

Bosnia's top utility, Elektroprivreda BiH, said at least 5,000 households were without electricity in the central and eastern parts of the country.

Heavy rainfall ravaged parts of Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina this week, resulting in the worst flooding the countries have seen in 120 years, Reuters reports.

A massive storm churned river waters and triggered landslides across some of the Balkan region, leaving roads and railways underwater. So far, three deaths have been reported, according to Reuters. On Thursday, Serbia and parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina declared a state of emergency, as roughly 100,000 homes were left without powerand 400 schools were closed, per Al Jazeera.

"What we are facing is the biggest water catastrophe in Serbia's history," Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said, per The Associated Press.

In Zavidovici town, river Bosna first destroyed one bridge that then collided with another bridge.

Lot of bad things happening in my country these days. Almost all cities are flooded, there were even fatalities, and lot of people are still in danger. Weather report says that rain will stop by sunday, but there is already lot of problems. Humanitarian actions are organised for cities that are in biggest problems. For a already problematic part of the world this is last that we needed. Some pictures of devastation:

It's a terrible tragedy, but all I can say is prepare for more of this in the coming years. There's a reason a similar thing happened in New York last year, there's a reason why floods in the UK have been severe and there's a reason why half of Florida and NYC will be underwater in the next couple of centuries, maybe less.

City of Doboj. My cousin's fiancee went there and bring his sister and her family from her devastated home. They were in attick, ony part of their house that wasn't under water.

Lot of people are now involved in humanitarian and cleaning actions. It have to hurry before infections and disease spread through region.

Horrible.

I've been seeing news reports on all kinds of floods country-wide. Haven't had anything seriously drastic here in Belgrade as far as I know. At least, not in my specific part of town. Pretty sunny here.

Apparently, today, Thursday and Friday will be declared mourning days for all the lives lost and all the damage done.

Ugh. Hope this ends soon.

Katastrofa.

Everything's okay here in Sarajevo though, except for Ilidza and some other parts of the city.

Now this:

Also, economists estimates one billion euros damage from the floods. That is lot for a country of 3,5 million people, who were already in trouble before this. Not good estimates for a next couple of years.
