Exploding knife glitch?

I wasn't quite sure which sub forum to post this in, but I figured this would be the best place. Tonight I was playing in an invite only session with a couple members of my crew. They were messing around with the gate launch glitch by Eclipse Towers. At one point, one of them gets launched so high up, that we think that the game code became messed up somehow. About 10 minutes passed, and then they moved on to fighting each other with melee weapons for the hell of it. When one of them pulls out his knife, he suddenly detonates as if he were cooking a grenade. This apparently happened every time he pulled it out. He looked at his grenade count, and it did not decrease at all after each explosion. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered it. I searched the forum and haven't found any other reports about it. I'm not sure if it can be recreated, but my crew members will try it again to see if it is.
