Can constant freezing damage the console?

You can see where the spikes in freezing searches are on google trends, the most searches in recent months for freezing in gta v are the last few days. Also there's been spikes after 1.11 and after 1.12. The searches were high last October but I bet those were for all the connection issues early on.

Nothing shows up on google trends unless it's a pretty major world wide search. A couple people here and there doesn't register.

every other game ive played that froze pops up with a warning about system damage and then asks if I would like to file a report with sony.

this game doesn't do that. you just get an auto-response blaming you.

Ok here is a question from a non technical person

Does anyone think my constant freezing problems could be down to the fact my disc is worn out after 7 months of constant play? I haven't loaded the game onto my hardrive by the way

I don't know if the freezing can damage the PS3, but I thought I should share my information.

I have the 250GB PS3 slim, it is as old as GTA IV, because I have no use for a PS3 without GTA.

For three of the years I've owned this PS3, I played GTAIV in 12 hour shifts almost daily, I'm sure there were periods when I didn't play it, because I'm a trophy hunter and my family does contract jobs.

Anyway, almost without fail, my console would freeze after 6 to 8 hours of non-stop play on GTAIV.

At some time in early 2013, the modded PS3's became rampant. One of the things these people used to do is, if you were beating them in death match, they would threaten to freeze and then they froze you. So, yes, people with modded PS3's can freeze your console. Is it likely that they are responsible for the mass freezing we're experiencing on GTAO? Not likely, my console has froze while in an invite-only session plenty of times.

In August 2013, my blu-ray laser died on my PS3. Did the freezing cause this? Or was it due to the fact that I'd leave my disc in the drive for months? Who knows?

So, here I am with the downloaded version of GTAV, 12 hour shifts, on the same PS3.

If it died tomorrow, I would say I got my money's worth out of it.

What I'm getting at is I've experienced console freezes for years and aside from my broken blu-ray laser, my PS3 is still doing it's thang.

Modern technology won't break on freezes anymore. Hard drives in this day and age have firmware that specifically fixes bad sectors. There's little to no chance that it will brick your console.

As an IT guy I'd have to disagree. Console freezes are UNLIKELY to damage your console but it's not impossible.

For PS3 users, NEVER power down by flipping over the main switch or pulling the cable out. That can cause the power supply to short-circuit. Just press and hold the power button and do a normal shutdown.

I had the freezing problem for about a week and I made sure to rebuild my database and file system afterwards. It's stopped happening. Once you crash, your database and file system get corrupted and need to be repaired. It happens with Minecraft, too. It's pretty easy to do, though I only know how to do it on the PS3.

Instructions here.

you normally want at least 40-50mb/s upload speed to keep multi player online session smooth

Please tell me you're trolling.

Go figure out how upload speeds affects online gaming before acting like a retard, below is a base lined entry level speed you would require for decent online gaming

I had one in a week - just after I killed a guy twice, so I lost those stats - that's what annoys me most

I've always wondered that though, because it's happened to me, if the other guy stays long enough for his game to save, then you would think you would get the credit for the kill

I have frozen 2 times since 1.11 with the newst gen xbox 360 slim. I play for 3 to 4 hrs a time. Once when I reported a hacker and once when doing the gate launch glitch

corrupts the disk over time

How exactly would it corrupt an unchangeable storage medium?

I assume you mean that it could physically damage the disc; scratches, gouges, etc. rendering it unreadable/unplayable

I may be any or all of those things - who knows. One thing that we do know for sure is that you believe you need 40-50Mb/s upload to have a good gaming connection. LOL!

Seriously, every single person on this forum (other than you) will get a laugh out of that. Please keep it coming.

You are completely oblivious & try to drag everyone in.If you have slow internet connection just say so,no need to come out with loads of bullsh*t,a fiber broadband can easily exceed 70mb/s upload speed,or you are simply to retarded to know what is a proper connection,Yeah epic failed gamer

Hahaha no you're not getting the funny bit. It's where you talk about requiring 40-50Mb/s upload speed for a solid gaming connection. That means that the majority of the world can't currently play online. Trying to make fun of my connection isn't anything to do with it - my connection works perfectly well, thanks, and is nowhere near that.

Don't waste your time on that idiot. No game ever has suggested that you need a 50mbps upload speed to play. While it is surely possible to achieve those upload speeds, my guess would be that less than 1% of online gamers actually have that. I'd like to see Biff actually post a speedtest report here to actually verify his claim.

Im more interested why people blame consoles as the problem for the freeze? On the few occasions mine has froze my friends in the same lobby all froze at the exact same time, does this mean all of our consoles are in collusion? I always believed this was a server issue no matter if you are on PS3 or Xbox

As for damaging your console, i have wondered this in the past as well, it doesnt seem healthy to constantly be hard restarting the console if you are having a lot of freezing

I had the same problem after the last update.

Do what I did. From https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200148806-PS3-games-freezing-at-random-intervals

1) Delete the games install data. This is done via the PS3 options. Scroll along the cross media bar until you reach the 'Game' tab, now scroll up / down the list until you reach the 'Game Data Utility' Enter this and locate the GTA IV option. Highlight this and press triangle once, from the menu select Delete. This will delete the games install information.

Then run the disc and re-install.

That's for PS3. Xbox should be similar.

I play competitve fps on USD$5K gaming pc & what I suggest is merely base lined for lag free online gaming. If you don't have what it takes to own even a decent decent internet setup, save yourself the insult & don't call yourself a gamer,I'm not making fun of your connection,I'm making fun of you coz you are one elite loser

So do it again. It takes half an hour and saves you from head ache.

For me the game froze every five minutes in freemode. Impossible to play.

Tbf it doesn't freeze every 5 mins like yours did. Sometimes I can play for 2-3 hours and not have a problem. Other times the game will freeze 3 times within an hour.

OmegaEvolution

So this has been bugging me for a while, since everyday at one point or another my PS3 freezes (it's the slim version) while playing GTA online.

Every time I obviously have to restart the console manually by shutting it down with the power button. Can this in any way damage my console?

Freezing/crashing and then improper shut down (improper defined by having to use the power button) leaves files in the PS3 that become corrupt/damaged and over time (years) these can accumulate and slow your PS3 down or cause more crashing.

Rebuilding the database and restoring the file system through the safe mode menu is like a health check for your PS3, it repairs and restores the damage that a freeze/crash can leave behind.

Other than that im not aware of freezing causing any real damage, the serious damage caused by freezing comes from lack of knowledge on how to properly shut down the Playstation when a freeze has occurred. The #1 cause of serious/permanent damage being pulling the plug or using the switch at the back of the Playstation.

Years ago, 10mb was the fastest broadband connection speed, so saying that any speed is "required" is a little silly... online games were quite playable then. And I remember my GTA: SA Multi Player days. You could have up to 200 players in a single server session, and I often played in the 100+ player sessions, with only 8mb broadband and had no issues.

If anything "more" is "required" then the game's files simply haven't been optimised as much as they should have been, thus an error on Rockstar's (or other game makers) part (note, Rockstar didn't even make SA:MP).

I generally get at least one or two game/ console freezes a day. Sometimes it's within 10 minutes, as with today but other times it can be hours. I'm generally of the belief that these are mostly down to Rockstar's part and nothing to do with internet, consistency or players.

Oh and for your info, my current internet speed with BT (fibre optic BBand) is 62mb on a 76mb connection, with up to 20mb upload.
Generally this means I can download files at a maximum of 7mb/s or upload at around 2.5mb/s.
The fastest service here in the UK is 152mb.
I believe the average is around the 20 mark, so by some understanding on this thread, they are to be blamed for some of the freezing issues, which I simply cannot comprehend hence previous paragraphs.
