Mafia III

Recommended Posts

I think this game could have worked better with multiple protagonists.

Lincoln, an Irish guy, and an Italian.

Lincoln and the Irish guy are hired guns who have done work together before they could have used Burke or Burke's son. After getting betrayed by Marcano Vito hears about it and offers to help Lincoln. Vito would also have his own motivations for helping Lincoln like trying to make a move against Marcano for power and his displeasure for only getting the docks and for getting treated like the black sheep in Marcano's operation.

Working for Vito they are introduced to the other protagonist an Italian who came with Vito from Empire Bay to New Bourdeux.

Did M3 sell that poorly?

It's a shame either way. I'd love to see another Mafia game, even if it's in the same vein as M3.

Mafia III was a commercial and critical success. I don't think it is necessarily connected to the success or failure of the game. In the past, there has been lay offs too, despite the commercial and critical success of the game.

EDIT:

Note the reason being common in case of both Mafia 3 and RDR.

RDR: realigning our resources in order to continue to develop games as effectively as possible.

Mafia 3: to ensure studio’s resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans

I don't think these reductions have any direct connection with Mafia 3, after all you will require people to develop whatever game they are planning next.

Well I guess this is what happens when you f*ck up...I guess Mafia is dead for now, at least there will always be the first two great games.

I think it had to do more with they had a bunch of employees and didn't really have a direction on where to go next so they came up with some horrible sh*t like this

One potential idea, which the person said Hangar 13 recently discarded, involved a third-person action game with a “fight to music” system where your moves would create songs, not unlike the canceled Harmonix game

.

That sounds terrible

There was nothing wrong with Mafia 3. A solid fun game all around. Every series with multiple entries through the years will always have people bitching "not as good as installment x".

I'm currently enjoying another playthrough of Mafia 2(Xbox bc). Great game. I believe this is my 3rd or 4th playthrough.

I was thinking of the series and progression of time with each installment. Fingers crossed for a Mafia 4 taking place in 1980's Philadelphia. We had a totally active and colorful mafia back then.

Well if you have played Mafia 2 then you know what was wrong with Mafia 3. I'm not one of those who demand a story about the italian mob, I was fine with the new direction but its one of the most repetitive games I have ever played and that ruined it for me.

The cutscenes were well done like in previous Mafia games but forcing the player to repeat the same sh*t again and again for every district was a stupid decision.

Also graphics and world wise it wasn't as good as Mafia 2 either. Empire Bay felt more alive and immersive to me.

Graphically the game looks good and I loved how the rain looked especially after storms puddles would form and you could see them dry up the next day.

My problem was with the lighting the game would get super dark sometimes where you could hardly see anything have they fixed that through a patch? I haven't played the game in months.

I really looked forward to this game but after about 3 hours of gameplay I gave up. I've never looked at it since sadly.

Not surprising that Take Two are doing reorganizing, doesn't every AAA publisher f*ck over their employees like that? Put so much effort into your work, and you still get sacked when the project is finished.

MAFIA III was/is a sh*tty game though. The game-play is repetitive and boring. The graphical glitches are so atrocious that they end up destroying the experience. And most of the game-play features from the first two have been removed or simplified. It wasn't MAFIA anymore. It became a generic open-world game with a '60s revenge theme.

I'm getting a real good feel for this game now. Mister Pink said it best so I won't repeat. I used to play this game only stealth but have evolved into causing chaos then calling for backup. I love being able to scope the place out first without being detected. The multiple entry points into a hideout is great. Sniping from a rooftop is mad fun. When I want to get rid of the lot of them at once, just pull out my voodoo doll and watch them congregate before tossing a grenade.

Now I see that the game is repetitive only if you want it to be. In between missions I drive around exploring the city which by the way looks great at night. Daytime is where the lighting issues really bother me sometimes. Driving in the bayou is dangerous for pedestrians. The sun has blinded me on more than one occasion.

Lots of variety. You just need to create it.

I've been playing Mafia II again since it became bc on the XB1 and it's so much better. Whilst Mafia III might have a leg up regarding combat and whatnot Mafia II still holds up extremely well after nearly 8 years. The thing with Mafia III is its voice acting and cutscenes have always been top notch, but its weaknesses come from trying to be more sandboxish than the previous two games IMO.

With Mafia II it's definitely more linear and uses the city more as a back drop, but it also allows for much tighter pacing. On paper taking over districts in Mafia III sounded really interesting, but in practice it's like smashing your head into a brick wall 30 times. I bet no one can even remember half of the generic racket bosses.

I hope for the next Mafia game they take the great voice acting and cutscenes of Mafia III and combine it with the world detail and tighter focus of Mafia II.

Damn pc elite and their stupid mods :D

Man, playable M2 Vito would've been a great reward. Collecting 100% collectibles didn't give me anything, not even a trophy/achievement. A hidden playable character would've been cool.

Compared to when I played this on PC release the difference is unreal in the graphics areas. Think I might need to give this another spin now that it won't burn my eyes.

It doesn't even feel like mafia. It just feels like a low-effort shovelware title. I already knew how bad it was going to be even before release just based on the trailer and the switching of development studios, so at least I didn't fall for the hype.

Also, anyone know where to find a copy of the first mafia for ps2? I never got a chance to play it but I hear it's the best in the series.

It would be better to get it for the PC. It's available on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/40990/Mafia/

Every conceivable advantage. You can even mod the game. Mafia 1 was originally a PC exclusive. It simply couldn't work on consoles. Eventually they managed to port it to the PS2 and Xbox two years later but they had to sacrifice some things to get it to work. I think that loading times on the PS2 was one of the problems that people complained about the most.

I really enjoyed it on PS2 aside from the damn loading screens, used to dread any long drives across town because of long the loading screens would be. So if you're willing to wait a while Deathmachine15 then yeah go for PS2...just make a cup of tea and a sandwich every time you start a mission, cross a bridge or do anything not within the starting area.

Just finished the story mode this past weekend. Honestly, I enjoyed the game. The story was top-notch. It never showed Lincoln in battle, but there are intimations all through the game that he is highly skilled and that the war did affect him in a tangible way. The historical content layered over his combat duties made Lincoln perfect for the job of taking down the embedded criminals in New Bordeaux.

The game is what it is. I feel the developers gave the player a lot of ways to approach a given mission even though there are repetitive elements of gameplay. The gaming world is huge and the story is excellent. A second play through is something that I plan on doing. At the moment, I am still collecting and getting rid of any leftover resistance. I haven't found every building to enter or every business to rob.

All-in-all, I had fun and wasn't too disappointed in the game.

https://kotaku.com/how-the-makers-of-mafia-iii-lost-their-way-1825242177

This a cool piece surrounding the development and future of Hangar 13.

At first, the plan was to make Mafia IV, set in Vegas during the 1970s. It was an enthralling vision—a video game take on Martin Scorsese’s Casino, set in the glitz and glamor of mob-controlled Sin City. It’s easy to imagine what that might have looked like: fighting enemies on the strip, managing your own casino, putting your character’s name in lights.

That would have been amazing I want a Mafia game set in Vegas but then Haden Blackman wanted them to create their own IP

From the same article

Plans for a fourth Mafia didnt last long. At one point, as two sources recalled, Blackman flew to New York City to meet with Take-Two and 2K higher-ups. He then told the staff of Hangar 13 that hed been given a choice: They could either develop Mafia IV or start something completely unique, a new intellectual property. He said hed picked the latter. The way it was pitched in the big all-hands meeting was: Mafia IV was a great thing, its exciting, said one person who was there. But weve always wanted to do our own IP.

Why can't we have nice things? Edited by Zello
