If you grew up playing NES...

..your ass is really going to appreciate this game. If you spent hours playing Who Framed Roger Rabbit you know what I am talking about. I used to be bound to 8 bit graphics. The only multiplayer we had had an extra 2 to 4 controllers. Anyone could glitch as long as you bought a game genie . And if you lost a save it was your own fault for not writing the code down correctly. Maybe it's just me but this game is doing just fine.

TL;TR thinking about playing Atari and NES and Sega makes me HATE GTA V...... not appreciate it.

Actually you are confused.... I grew up playing Atari and NES....... GTA V makes me wish I was a kid again playing those video games. Microtransactions, game breaking glitches, DLC, kiddies yelling in their mics online, patches, etc etc etc..... I miss the old days of gaming where you bought a COMPLETE game, played it, beat it (some times), and then got excited about the sequel.

More specifically with GTA V..... I bought it, played it, beat it... then sat around waiting for online, then sat around for online to start working, then played online, got bored, sat around waiting for DLC, played it, got bored in a few hours of playing that DLC, sat around waiting for next DLC, played for few hours, got bored, waited for next DLC.....

I wish I could just get excited about GTA VI. Instead, I'm excited about Just Cause 3 (not that that a bad thing).

Playstation 2 was the last truly great console. PS3, Xbox 360, Xbone, PS4, PC games, etc etc.... all have awesome games.... but the consoles themselves lack the true meaning of what it means to be a gamer. Consoles and games today are made for everyone..... not just gamers.

IMO, I personally think online-gaming ruined today's gamers.

If you wanted some MP gaming, you called up your buddies, got some snacks, dug out your spare controllers/multi-tap, and you played.

Don't get me started on the link-cable situ with pokemon, I was the designated "link cable guy" for my school, backpack full of cords and stuff.

The game IS doing just fine. It's mind blowing that so many people can't wrap their heads around the master piece of an open world that Rockstar have created here - just the fact that it works and functions at ALL is proof of their programming prowess - yet, we get a few bugs here and there, and people say the game is a pile of crap.

Idiots.

Thanks for making me feel old. I remember when I jumped up to the Playstation (1)... God, all this time and I still haven't bought a gaming PC. FML.

I fully understand that, but with all of "R*'s prowess" the game seems to be lacking in more ways than one.

This game could have been much more if CEO's-Turned-Gamers didn't create dlc/level walls to justify withholding content.

I remember text-only games. If the graphics were sh*t it was because your imagination was sh*t. Hardcore.

If a player loves a game, they should criticize its flaws because the player wants the game to improve. Problem being the difference between constructive criticism and loud complaining.

Edit: Not keen on backseat modding but this is turning more into "I am an older gamer than you" competition than explaining why GTA Online is such a boost to gaming.

My 1st console was the Calecovision...

which released in 1982. Yes, I probably just dated myself as one of the oldest mawf*ckaz on the forum now...but that just goes to show you how spoiled some of these youngins' are. They have the nerve to piss and moan about GTAO, and just about every other game ever released in their generation. We didn't have saves. We didn't have DLC. We had the game out of the box, we played it, we enjoyed it...and we didn't make ourselves look like self entitled dumbasses. I think my fellow Generation X'ers (Those who were 16-21 years old between the period of 1992-1999) can agree with me in saying the Internet Generation, the 16-26 year olds of today should collectively shut the f*ck up and appreciate what they have.

Me too brother, these young NES kids just don't get it. For us old schoolers we spent our childhood dreaming about growing up and making an amazing freeroam game. My friends and I used to talk about it a lot, 30 years ago. GTA V is the closest thing yet and it's amazing to see it happen after all those years.

Anyone remember this:Pe82BaG.gif

I remember this.

I have a large collection of retro stuff including about 5 fully functional c64s. Best home computer / games system ever imho. Certainly the best sound chip of all time, still used by a lot of music bands today.

I would cry because it wasn't my turn to play Combat. CRY!! now I call the mechanic, & he brings me 1 of my 10 customized vehicles. after that I decide if I want to drive to the airport, or high speed chase with the cops. I'll do both!

The End.

On a serious note though, games today don't even compare to the classics of the 80's, and 90's. Sure the graphics are 100X better, but the originality of some of the classics far outshine them. I remember beating the first Zelda with no guide, no internet, just me and figuring out what the hell to do next. I was on top of the world after beating Gannon. Same with Donkey Kong Country for SNES. Completing 104% again with no guide, internet, or anything.

Born in '83 i first played Mario Bros., Ghosts and Goblins and Legend of Zelda. Beat the first and the latter but never G&G, think I made it to some weird blue stage with puppetmasteresque little munchkin enemies that always did me in. My favorite NES game was Final Fantasy which I also never beat as a child but I did make it to the final boss.

Games today are graphically superior but devoid of imagination. The 80s is perhaps the most creative decade in film and games and things have only become more derivative. I think concepts like tropes are poisonous to creativity. Now we have a couple of genres of games all made the same way built off of the same licensed proprietary software.

It's a mixed bag. Basically everyone on this thread has been correct, both in praise and criticism.

I grew up playing NES and unfortunately, being a kid in a non english speaking country didn't figure me what a 'Password' is until I played around with it by inserting random 4-digit code in Contra on my yellow Game Boy Pocket.

Why are people trying to say, "no I'm older!"? As if age makes a difference on this forum.

I grew up on the N64 but I played the NES, love arcades, own mutliple consoles and play them from time to time (Banjo Kazooie is a f*cking massive game!), all that stuff, so it really puzzles me how people can be ungrateful. Cloud saves? Huge memory cards? Anyone remember the PS2 memory card that sometimes wouldn't show up on the save menus for games? I thought LAN Parties was magic. You know what co-op was back in my day? We sat on the same couch...and here I am saying how old I am, damnit. I'm going against my first statement, okay, but couch co-op was tons of fun and I feel sad for anyone that hasn't experienced it.

GTA V's DLC is disappointing me, I'll admit, but it's free and it appears from the internet. You know how awesome that is? Some wire plugged in this box just added things to my game. Granted, it doesn't copy to my CD so I need to stay connected to said wire to keep that stuff but still. GTA V is an amazing game and we don't give it enough credit. People will moan about anything, though, so it's expected to have any game get blasted. Imagine the most PERFECT game where you can make your character down to the color of dirt under his toenails, have every car in the world, every city down to the detail and a million players playing at the same time with no lag and graphics are so great you could touch the TV and don't notice the different with your arm. People would say, "too much to do, this game sucks", I'm sure of it.

I was born in '86. my first system was the NES but it never worked, so I got a SNES. Got Mario All-Stars, Super Mario Land, Mario Kart, me and my cousin played Mario 3 for hours, damn ice map pissed us to high hell, but we had fun. Never did have a lot of money growing up, but I had a Sega Genesis, had a Sega CD but lighting fried the motherboard, didn't touch the connected Genesis though to my surprise and relief. Nintendo64; Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, me and my cousin would play that for hours too, blowing each other up, blowing up bots/sims.

I love GTAV, I thinks its an awesome game. Yes, it has its flaws, just like anything else man-made. but given how much programming it takes for something like GTAV requires, I would EXPECT bugs/glitches a freeze once in a while (I've only had maybe 3 freezes since I've had it and played online). Perhaps, R* is doing things half-assed, I honestly don't know, I don't know what kind of workload the programmers have, how many people they have working on it, but I modded CNC Generals a little, basic stuff really; new models for vehicles and such, mainly borrowing from other mods to make my own personal mod, and seeing all the lines of code there was just for like structure build animations really made me appreciate the long hours of tiring, often frustrating work and time away from their families that programmers put into these games. As far the bugs/glitches are concerned, back before games were automatically updated via internet, if a game came out, and it didn't work or some bug/glitch made it unplayable..... oh well. IF the company patches it up and re-releases the new updated version, you'd have to buy a new copy.

I'm just appreciative of the work put into these games. With DLCs, R* could easily charge for them, and people probably would still pay for them if they weren't over-priced.... but they don't charge for them, unlike a lot of other companies.

Anyway, I probably dragged this out more than I should, but oh well. I'm just showing my appreciation for the games over the years as are a lot of other gamers on this thread/forum. That being said; game on, people

There have been a few other epic open world games I can remember along the way. From my old rusty memory, Mercenary (c64), Midwinter 1 and 2 (Amiga) in part two I remember stealing a giant submarine and using TNT to blow up the land for hours until I had made a harbour for it... Also Hunter on the Amiga. In its own way Raiders of the lost Ark on the Atari 2600 was insanely good and very difficult to solve as a kid.

Who remembers Pitfall 2?. It took you half the day to finish and it you died once you went right back to the start! No second chance, no extra life, no respawn.

Having played almost ever game on the old systems the two that stood out the most for me are probably Elite (which I played every night after school for almost a year and still never finished). Elite is currently under a remake by the way.

Also Paradriod (c64), that game was off the hook.

But the greatest game of all time for me was undoubtedly "The Sentinel" c64, 64k of code, thousands of miles of map. 10,000 levels/maps. A friend of mine played it often from age 13 to his late twenties and reached level 4000. Most other people I know never made it past level 20.. I myself only ever made it to level 160 or so. It was an extremely difficult game I'd take a good bet no one on the planet has ever finished it. It was a work of art, a masterpiece of coding.

I remember well my NES. Back in the late 80's. My first video games. But I'm not really nostalgic of those NES graphics. Just not enough colors for my eyes.

It was better on the Super NES and SVGA PC graphics. I like the pixel art tho.

Duke is god & Duke Nukem 3D makes up for that & a lot more.

..and the game wasn't that bad considering all it went through.
