Bezerk and pitfall were a couple of my favourites on the atari! Games, especially the gta series has come a long way since then. I remember when the first gta came out and thinking it was the most awesome thing I'll ever play!

I grew up playing this:

and this...

So when people complain about GTA, I can't help but laugh.

the price was damn near the same also. Entitledment that's all the complaints are about.

I remember turning around pac man on my 2600...took all night.

Bitch please! I had Atari 2600!

I totally agree with the OP! Today's gamers seem to have gone soft. They want everything as soon as they turn the game on. They can't stand the thought of actually working for the in-game rewards, either. The funny thing is, as soon as they find a way to get all of the unlockable content, money, Exp (Old school nod!), they get bored with the game and trade it in just a week or so after the get it home! These gamers are why stores like GameStop are thriving. These gamers are why Candy Crush rakes in over $800,000 PER DAY and over $1 billion in '13!! These people are why Rockstar offers Shark Cards!

They will never understand the term "Nintendo Hard!"

I think Excite-a-bike and North & South were me two favourite on the NES. You could build your own tracks on excite-a-bike and North a South was a kind of war game based in the US civil war. Good times

north and south was unbelievable !!

You damn well better hold the reset button in while turning the power off for Legend of Zelda!

All the games I play now are for relaxation- not challenge. If GTA was anywhere near as complicated as f*©king "Milon's Secret Castle" on NES, I would have punted my PS3 out the window long ago.

Yup, I've been a gamer ever since the Atari 2600 came out. I've owned nearly all the systems between then and now as well. I still have all my old systems and games in the attic, but seeing as how it's a pain to hook them up to HDTVs, I got to my PC emulators when I'm feeling nostalgic.

It's also the reason I don't mind farming for money because I remember all those old RPG games (Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Phantasy Star to name a few) where you had to fight enemies for hours before you hand enough money to get better weapons and armor, let alone be strong enough to go into the next dungeon.

The original Final fantasy. Damn how many hours I spent fighting the same enemy in the swamp or wherever to level up. = to RR today lol.

I grew up with Atari, NES, SNES and so on. This has equipped me to see R*'s shortcomings more clearly, not to swallow up what they make with blind nostalgic fanship.

Back in the day, you had to really 'play' a game in order to beat it. Limited continues, limited lives, and situations that when you died you had to start over again from the beginning forced you to learn the game, learn the pattern of the enemies, for a strategy. And scream bloody murder when you got to the final boss and died, forcing you to start over again. Kids today have autosave, endless lives, and when you die you spawn right near the place you died. In a way, it makes games too easy, but at the same times opens up the gaming experience to the casual gamer as well.

Exactly.

I expected more freedom and creativity as technology advanced, not forced restrictions and content hidden behind pay/level walls and for-profit gaming.

Anyone remember this:

Pe82BaG.gif

Indeed. I have 3 Commodore 64s in my garage.

I also remember the Vextrex? It was a game system built into a tiny TV, smelled like ozone, and made the hair on your arms rise up if you got too close to the system. I would have still had mine, but I was playing the Star Trek game one day, and the darn thing blew up. Kerbang, sparks out the back, and plastic smelling smoke. Boy, gaming was safe back then LOL.

Never had the Atari 2600, but we did have a Commodore 64 and later the NES, SNES, etc.

Ghosts and Goblins, Metal Gear, Double Dragon 3.... I learned to keep a pillow nearby so my controller had somewhere soft to land when I chucked it out of frustration lol

I think everybody threw their controller at least once while playing that one level of Battletoads.

I think everybody threw their controller at least once while playing that one level of Battletoads. If you even got to it. I played with my brother most of the time and someone would always end up punching the other person while we were doing that level where you go down the pit on ropes. It would be on from then and you would just end up knocking each other off the ropes until you both died.

I never beat that evil f*cking level on the console, but I nailed it on the 5th attempt on my modded PSP.

Hooray for emulation :D

Now, let me get back to finishing up Paper Mario N64 on my tablet while wait for 50 minutes to pass to sell another car.

..your ass is really going to appreciate this game. If you spent hours playing Who Framed Roger Rabbit you know what I am talking about. I used to be bound to 8 bit graphics. The only multiplayer we had had an extra 2 to 4 controllers. Anyone could glitch as long as you bought a game genie . And if you lost a save it was your own fault for not writing the code down correctly. Maybe it's just me but this game is doing just fine.

TL;TR thinking about playing Atari and NES and Sega makes me HATE GTA V...... not appreciate it.

Actually you are confused.... I grew up playing Atari and NES....... GTA V makes me wish I was a kid again playing those video games. Microtransactions, game breaking glitches, DLC, kiddies yelling in their mics online, patches, etc etc etc..... I miss the old days of gaming where you bought a COMPLETE game, played it, beat it (some times), and then got excited about the sequel.

More specifically with GTA V..... I bought it, played it, beat it... then sat around waiting for online, then sat around for online to start working, then played online, got bored, sat around waiting for DLC, played it, got bored in a few hours of playing that DLC, sat around waiting for next DLC, played for few hours, got bored, waited for next DLC.....

I wish I could just get excited about GTA VI. Instead, I'm excited about Just Cause 3 (not that that a bad thing).

Playstation 2 was the last truly great console. PS3, Xbox 360, Xbone, PS4, PC games, etc etc.... all have awesome games.... but the consoles themselves lack the true meaning of what it means to be a gamer. Consoles and games today are made for everyone..... not just gamers.
