I still don't get how Red Dead Redemption is a masterpiece.

The story is weak and John Marston is a totally unexceptional character. That, and most of the gameplay just consists of fetch quests you turn in. RPG's tend to give you loot/exp/upgrades for completing grinds but Red Dead just feeds you cutscenes. That, and the linear drive-shoot-drive formula is even worse than it was in GTA IV.

i disagree with most of what you said but its nice to see some Criticism aimed at it its not the perfect Masterpiece that some of its Fanboys Claim it to be the hero worship it gets at times is Really annoying and the cattle missions are Hands Down the most boring/ irritating missions in any R* Game and this coming from a guy who still rates it Highly.

and back OT After thinking long and hard about it My List is Like This

1.Grand Theft Auto IV

2.Max Payne 3

3. Red Dead Redemption (Barely Over V)

4.Grand Theft Auto V

5. Bully Scholarship Edition

@ godforgivesthelostdont

If you cannot see the greatness in RDR, then that's a shame. I will accept that RDR though may not be such a great game for everyone. Not everyone loves Western-themed stuff, and some people don't have patience to ride horses in games or the attention span to really appreciate beautiful graphical scenery, wildlife and stuff like that. If you don't like it, you don't like it, can't say much to that.

@ Jeffery

I do think the cattle herding missions in the RDR were quite tedious at times, and that is one of the very few cons of the game. However, when I look at it from a wider perspective, I realize that it really suits the theme of the game and the pacing of it's story. It's just one of those small features that feel like chores but are really needed to get a full, authentic feel of the wider experience of a great game.

I say max payne 3 was the best because it delivered as a linear shooter. was beautiful, had the best 3rd person shooting mechanics, and had a very nice story, even though the story and environments werent at all like the first 2 games, It was pretty solid.

RDR comes next for me only because I think the shooting was better than any gta game, but not MP3. Although, RDRs multiplyer before hackers beats all the gtas and MP3.

IV and V definitly aren't the best of R* in gen 3. Maybe gta was in the 2nd, but HD gta sorta rides the coat tail of gen 2 GTAs and what we learned to expect

I second this. It also has the best graphical details of any R* game ever.

Even though I'm still playing GTA IV because LC > LS, the best R* game this gen wasn't a GTA, it was easily Red Dead.

Man, to think there are people who believe John Marston was unremarkable but liked The Lost and Damned's story... I don't understand these guys.

For gameplay? Yes.

For Story? Red Dead Redemption.

I just love how people are saying that V went back to GTA roots, when they personally don't have an idea what that even means. Another empty slogan making the V defenders even more "sophisticated" and better.

The reason why I think V went back to its roots is the change between the serious IV and the chaotic V. A dramatic GTA isn't bad, but there's no denying wacky, over the top chaos is what GTA had to begin with. I think the only thing GTA V doesn't have compared to 3d era GTA is the story, which isn't that bad imo, but isn't that familiar to the classic GTA's. Everything else seemed to make me feel at home, like vehicles, weapons, missions, etc.
So SA is the beginning of GTA series and the so called roots? Thanks for proving my theory even further.
Hm.. Remember a game called GTA 1? Remember how you could massacre a town with flamethrowers and tanks? I guess that isn't over the top and chaotic.

Again, remember that these were just side elements and the games from 1 to VC got rather dark storylines with occasional joke thrown here and there. Tanks and flamethrowers were in GTA 3, but does that game was really over the top and chaotic? Learn to differentiate theme and story from gameplay elements.

GTA was always more or less about seriousness, with occasional joke elements and some lighter scenes. GTA 1 was serious, same goes for GTA 2 and III, LCS, VCS, IV, TLaD, hell even TBoGT got darker side of the story if you look at that. But none of them was plain over the top and chaotic.

The roots are back in the late '90s, early '00, so if any game came back to them was IV, being modern rendition of III, with lonely guy seeking revenge in big city without any of the aliens, spaceship, pink dildo crap.

I'm sorry, but growing up with GTA I found it more to be a crime simulator, whilst IV was a realistic crime simulator. That's how I see it and still see it.

So if GTA was a crime simulator, how exactly game that is more leisure in south california is fitting the whole "back to the roots" of the series?

When you look at the tech side of it, how they were able to pull GTAV off on the Xbox 360 and PS3 is still hard for me to understand. And Rockstar put a lot of effort into putting the story together, with a great cast and a lot of very involved heists when you consider the character switching and heist planning.

But when you look at the overall game and compare it to other Rockstar titles from the last-gen consoles, GTAV does not take the cake. IMO, Red Dead Redemption was their best open-world title from the last-gen and Max Payne 3 was their best linear third-person shooter focused on telling a story rather than showing you a world.

The oddest thing: I thought there was a pretty unanimous hate on Max Payne 3 on this forums before GTA V came out? And now everyone's singing praises about it?

But I agree with Red Dead Redemption being the best R* title in this gen. From the story, gameplay, DLC, it was pretty much perfect. GTA V did have better visuals (and cars!), but RDR hits the mark on every aspect of what a game should have. As for Max Payne 3, it was good, but coming from a Splinter Cell fan, it wasn't really that enjoyable to say the least.

Wrong

Compare RDR Tall Trees to GTA V's Paleto Bay Forest or Mount Chillard Wilderness

RDR beats it in graphics. GTA V has better lighting and colors.

IMO Talls Tree isn't superior because of the way it looks. It actually feels like a real dense forest whereas in GTA V it feels like a few trees near the highway.

Technically: GTA V

Overall: RDR

My personal favourite: GTA IV.

Never played MP3 or L.A Noire

I think they're on par with each other. If GTA V had a wider, less linear map then GTA V would beat RDR in graphics no doubt.

I still think there's plenty of crime in the game. And aside from side activities and missions and such, there's plenty of room for rampages and commiting various crimes in free roam.

Red Dead Redemption is overrated in the sense that, while being a good game on its own with several great moments, it can still be better, much better than it currently is.

So the fact that everyone sang praises to it can lead to the developers thinking that there isn't 'much' they can improve on.

Just look at Grand Theft Auto IV's critical reception, if it didn't sat so high with press reviews, don't you think Grand Theft Auto V would have been a whole different beast altogether?

* I'm not so sure about that. I honestly don't see anything major in where RDR went wrong, it more or less accomplished everything it set out to do - brilliantly, and the graphics, and effects were supreme. If there are flaws, they are very minor for most part.

* There is always room for improvement, even in products that symbolize excellence, and that goes for RDR. Of course it can be improved.

* Games developers don't normally think like that, they generally try to build on the great success of their previous work. (However Rockstar has left me stumped with GTA V, it's like they hardly bothered).

* Reviews wouldnt matter to me, V is still a bit of disappointment to me.

V was great. I still get some fun out of it, actually i really loved the game.

But the game of this generation was RDR. Best gameplay, best scenario, best characters, best story, best everything.

PoeticWhisper

The only game that came close to V is RDR.

The rest are OK games but nothing amazing.

V has the better gameplay while RDR has the better story.

I find it hard to choose between them but if I were to lose my copies of these games the first one I'd buy again would be V so...there you go.

I'd say same, but I very much enjoyed Max Payne 3
