So I have a ruffian but I keep falling off when doing those bump jumps, has anyone got any bike recommendations, I'm thinking of the 801rr because single arm looks weird.

It's just practice. You need to line up for jumps correctly, as the slightest course correction will stop your ability to wheelie.

For a beginner I'd recommend Mirror Park. Lots of the houses have little walls around them that are only about knee height, and most of the buildings are only 1 storey so you can get a sense of achievement whilst learning and practising.

Here's a couple of pics I took...

On top of the petrol station opposite downtown LSC

And one final one on some random rooftop in Mirror Park

Rockstar already made the best skateboarding game known to man, thrasher skate and destroy. Completely underrated game. Probably be a bit far fetched if they added an indoor skatepark with that feature but I miss the days of having to remember a hundred button combos to pull of a frontside flip HA

Some brilliant stuff, and @Furry_Monkey! Thank you for sharing!

I've been to some new and wondrous locations, but no photos to share. Here's one, but in trying to capture a shot-by-shot, *I* got shot.

I'm finding it more challenging now to pull off unique stunts in Free Roam as so many people see another player focused on a task and feel compelled to dispense them from their fun.

Ah well, my own fault for playing in Free Roam! LOL!! The good news is, when they attack, I retaliate and don't stop still my appetite is sated! moo-hoo-hwa-ha-ha!!

I'll try to post another update soon! Cheers & ride safe! :)

I decided to make some simple races and videos to help people get into this a bit more. The races all have a checkpoint near the start (for when you crash and burn and want to try again :p ) and a finish checkpoint that you need to somehow get to. The videos show you how I did it.

This gives you the chance to do the stunts over and over again without killing your bike or yourself. Plus, there's no traffic (by default) and it's noon on a lovely sunny day. Perfect setting for practising a stunt over and over again!

I've done 3 videos so far, but only cut & uploaded one of them. I'll upload the other 2 probably tomorrow and work on making more over the weekend. Also, the 3 that I've done are very commonly seen on Youtube. I'm just getting the known ones out of the way first and then I'll do some of my own stuff.

I love it. Unfortunately I'm not good enough to finish it yet. But after 10 minutes of trying, I did manage to splatter in the parking lot under the checkpoint a couple of times. I'll definitely be trying it again. I think my frustration threshold may be a little low this week post Flight School. (I am not a good pilot.)

Awesome - I'm glad it's proving useful already. And despite me telling myself I should be in bed by now, here's the 2nd one...

BTW - I've spotted that I've got the numbering mixed up. The races and videos are numbered differently. I'll fix that tomorrow.

Edit: I've also decided not to hijack this thread so I've started a new one for these in the Guides & Strategies forum instead.

@Furry_Monkey, these are so gobblamned awesome I may have just pee'd a little with excitement. Seriously.

I'm really grateful that you chose to share them. Thank you!!! The only downside is that I tried to Add Race to Game, but was denied. XBox vs. PS3. ugh.

Still, I'm enjoying just watching! Cheers!

Can you try this link and see if you have any more luck?

I've just changed the platform ID and it's showing as an Xbox race so it *may* work now.

Okay this is strange then. If I go to this page then I get the PS3 race...

http://socialclub.rockstargames.com/games/gtav/jobs/job/5uUDO0xoZU-MEAaoacJeQQ?platformId=2

I can then change it to Xbox and it goes to this page...

http://socialclub.rockstargames.com/games/gtav/jobs/job/5uUDO0xoZU-MEAaoacJeQQ?platformId=1

But I can't go directly to that link unless I've done manually first, and then it does work.

Something's not right with the SC (shock, horror!)

Edit: I *think* I've figured it out. Go to the 1st link and then change console to Xbox, using the dropdown menu. That won't find it, but leave that tab open, come back here and click the 2nd link. That opens the race as an Xbox360 race for me. Can someone try that and see if it does work?

  • 3 weeks later...

@fw3 I'm doing a dedicated week on the Bati, as it simply razzes in the face of the Ruffian for many stunts, but I'm struggling with some of them and I think it simply cannot do them. I just wondered if a more experienced Bati rider, as yourself, could confirm or rebut this.

(Spoiler tags because I don't want this to seem like self-promotion)

The first stunt in this...

and the second stunt in this (the big one)...

You'll see that they're both the same type of barrier. I've not tried that type of barrier at high speed anywhere else, but I think that it may be the problem. The problem, of course, may simply be me :)

Now for the self-promotion. My newly decked out Bati. No point spending a week on it if I don't fancy it up :D

The Lonesome Drifter

Recently took up stunting myself now I've finally bought a ruffian :) I'm just so in love with the thing and it's wheelbase that I've been hitting whatever hills I can when the opportunity arises. But I'll admit I'm not in the league of the pros (yet...)

Any xbox stunners want some company? Hit me up :)

GT: XL connor96 LX

Also did anybody ever play TH American Wasteland? Love that game and would kill for another copy, but I'll admit it was a little... Easy in terms of tutorials :(

hey there and thanks for chiming in! Feel free to share in your successes (and failures! LOL!), anytime here. I love reading about this stuff and always looking for new places to hit.

Good luck with the Ruffian. It's a sweet bike and while I ditched mine in favor of the Bati, I think the Bati tends to bail out more upon landing larger tricks. Would enjoy hearing your experiences. :)

@Furry_Monkey, thank you so much for sharing the videos. I love love love seeing all that! It inspires me silly! Just when I'm thinking I'm done with it, something like those revive my interest and I can't wait to get home to check it out!

As I said to Drifter, above, I gave up on the Ruffian. It just wasn't doing it for me. The Bati has simply been the one that worked for me. However, the Bati is very sensitive on landing and often bails on larger jumps. Does the Ruffian seem to take landings better, in your opinion?

As for jumps, it's mostly in the timing, right? I found the Bati allowed me a quicker lift to hit the rails with better timing, while for me, the Ruffian seemed slower to lift and quicker to drop after wheelie-ing.

Not sure if that helps! Thanks for sharing. Brilliant stuff! ;)

Glad I can repay what you did for me. I literally wouldn't be doing this if you hadn't started this thread.

I can't speak for landing the Bati as the jumps I have problems even getting off the ground with are the ones that have big drops. I'll report back with some kind of comparison of the 2 bikes when I've done my week with the Bati, which I'm going to officially start on Monday since I've hardly been on this week and am away for the weekend. One thing I do know for sure is that I struggle to get a good wheelie on a Bati, whereas I have no issues on a Ruffian. I probably just need more experience with it, but I'm not sure how experience will help me wheelie better in a straight line with no traffic!

We shall see.

Funny, because I spend so much time in the game on the Bati, even in missions, that I find I wheelie every few seconds and many, many times I'll be in a wheelie and just hit something random that launches me. It's a great surprise and I end up going back to find out what I hit, and then hit it over and over. LOL!! :)

Actually yes - I've noticed with the Bati that it will quite often jump when hitting the smallest of things. Even a kerb is enough to get some air time, whereas a Ruffian requires something a bit more substantial. I wish I understood more of the logic behind what's going on, because you can do the same stunt 50 times and think you're doing it near as damnit exactly the same, but get 50 different outcomes. I can't complain though. It means going back to the same stunts over and over again can still be exciting, especially when you throw a car chasing you into the mix :D

In my experience:

Bati is a little faster. It can achieve higher speed in a restricted approach, and jump greater distances.

Ruffian can wheelie higher. It can ramp off some objects too large for the Bati.

Some stunts you can use either. Other stunts are easy with one bike, but difficult or impossible with the other.

There's a place for both in any stunter's garage. Use the right tool for the job.

Edit: I haven't noticed any difference on landings. But I'm getting better at sticking landings with any bike, the more I practice.

Thanks man - that's pretty much my experience so far so it's nice to have it confirmed by someone.

I've also found that despite me thinking that gliding was easy and that I'd got it down immediately when first trying it, here I am after doing it for ages and noticing that I've only just actually got the hang of it. I'm easily pulling off big flying jumps that I previously thought impossible without boosts or Franklin's special ability (neither of which I will use).

This was good, but Tony Hawk was still better. From grinding on escalators in a mall in an epic race to the finish, to throwing tomatoes at russian soldiers in snow-capped moscow, even giving horny sluts beads during a madri gras celebration, Tony Hawk really did have it all.

I have to say, I agree to a degree. THPS1 & 2 were a bit of a chore. But when 3 came out, holy wow - I played that game non-stop for months.

By the time THPS4 came out, I was deep into it, but my interest was for something more expansive, which of course was GTA3.

Now, with the Tony Hawk games pretty much just mythology now, GTA has taken everything that came before it to levels, at least for me, barely imagined.

If GTA5 existed when THPS3 came out, it's likely that I'd never played THPS3 at all. I mean, why bother?

SSX had everything else I needed. :)

Oh, like-minded forum friends who enjoy stunting as much as I do, how doth you inspire thee? I dunno, but you do! :)

Thanks, and @Furry_Monkey, for reminding me of what I found so fascinating about this game beyond the pale of the obvious.

Your efforts allowed me to reach the top of the world today! No, seriously, I did. In the game. Check it out! One little tiny railing down an alleyway led me to this spot. Not a major achievement, but I was thrilled to get there! Cheers! :)

The Lonesome Drifter

Did manage to jump up to an apartment rooftop in vine wood today after hitting a grass hedge...

But couldn't stop in time and smashed into an air-con = fell off the roof and splat :/
