Dr Murder
IMHO the entire ocean is a waste of content / memory where other ideas could've been implemented... if you look at how much sea there is .. Just half of it could've been San Fierro .. how many players are out there diving and swimming most of the time??? FFS!! mareepx

artisntrealz
The ocean doesn't take up remotely as much server space as even a half a city block of interactive city. The only waste of space is this thread on this forum. IVIechanomics, lazyassedlover, MauritianPanther and 1 other
KiTTYReCkless
The ocean floor doesn't take as much memory as you think. If you were to remove the water the game will only render the (once) underwater landscape closest to you. There is so much pop up, it's ridiculous. The dark atmosphere is what allowed R* to pack so much detail into it and allow ppl to see it in real time. Sure more dry land would have been nice, but our consoles are already being pushed to their max. Having to process more full detailed landscape would make the game run worse. I would much rather see the beautiful ocean floor being used for missions and PvP combat. (Um, attack submarines? Harpoon guns? Etc.) There are a lot of Easter eggs and neat things strung throughout the ocean. They should be put to use. Dr.Rosenthal
The ocean is awesome and I f*cking love it. The only problem is that there is basically nothing to do there in GTAO. For example, R* could put duffel bags of money or weapons on the ocean floor or among wreckages so we could go down there on treasure hunts. That's just one idea... k33g
I agree they're not utilizing the ocean as much as they should, that's why I'm hoping if they do a map expansion it will be some islands with a lot of water in between. Foppezão
I made a request for R* to put yachts in it, boats you can buy and use as a pegasus vehicle, maybe with some jet skis, submarine, helipad. They did it in Ballad of gay Tony, and since it's almost the same engine as V... I want the battlefield to shift to the water, yeah! Edited May 9, 2014 by Foppezão

maybeanotherone
with the logic here gtaSA should've had an infinite map considering the ocean was infinite... it's not the same thing to have more models in memory and just rendering ocean repeatedly. specially considering R* is the type to hand stitch everything instead of using random map generators. i do not see any map expansions being apart of the current model, to add anything at the scale they build now, we would have to have any new terrain be a separate load sort of like 3 and VC had. R* seems to avoid those loading methods these days, so i highly doubt we will ever have terrain expansion in gta5 as it is in current gen. SaveTheZombies
I was hoping to see new islands too but I also don't think they can just add it to the current SA. Maybe we can go to the airport and catch a flight to another island that's completely different map. I don't see that as completely unreasonable. A lot of open world games have dlc like that. But yes, why didn't they have little treasures to find in the ocean with GTAO like they had with GTAV?

SabreVC
If there was fishing, yachts, wildlife, and treasure finds similar to crate drops in the ocean, people would be out in about in the ocean more. Grumpy-Goat-
If anyone recalls when asked about future content for GTAV/Online Rockstar did note that the ocean was designed to in fact be able to expand the map itself. It may be open and blank right now, but it was designed that way to allow for future additions.

Hodgey.
Yes the ocean isnt utilised to it's full potential but before the game was released alot of people where excited by the prospect but probably dont ever use it. I think it is one of those situations where if R* didn't create a underwater enviroment people will continue to ask for it game after game until they decide to finally put it in. Now that they have and people really dont care about, then maybe next time around they wont create the underwater world and may give us a bigger map or more interiors. l Digitized l

I actually think it may have been a podcast that I was listening to with R* discussing the ocean. It was quite some time ago, and I'm not gonna try and sift through all the R* podcasts or info to try and find it. But I remember this being a very specific conversation that the map was indeed designed for expansion. I doubt that after a month or so that many people would really be using scuba gear anymore. I dont see why they couldn't add it at some point in the future though like you said. RajunKjun
Remember in GTA 3 one side of map was an inaccessible bridge and the other side was a mountain with barricaded tunnels. You couldn't fly in that game so it wasn't a big deal to come to the end of the map. However on the games that followed we were forced to turnaround mid flight over the ocean at the edge limits. I guess the larger ocean is to add a perspective of realism in the game. Also...GTA 3...1998ish, I was in high school. Damn I'm aging.
