Doc Rikowski
These transfer sums are getting lame now. I heard Fiorentina wants 43 Million for some back I've never even heard of.. clubs should just boycot that sort of bullsh*t amounts for those kind of players. I'm sorry, but if you've never heard of Juan Cuadrado you're not that much into football, are you? He's been magnificent for Fiorentina over the last two years and is one of (if not) the best winger in the Serie A. I agree though that €43m is too much. I'm very into football. Not very into Serie A. Eredivisie/Bundesliga/La Liga/Premier League and Ligue 1 I follow, not a fan of the Serie A. As much as Serie A lost a bit of quality in the past decade it is also true that modern club football, for good or bad, has started there in the 80s when Serie A was unanimously considered the best national championship in the world. At some point by the end of the decade absolutely all top players were in Serie A. Italian teams were the first to hire top quality foreign players in the 80s and the first to pay to them very high salaries. Believe it or not the main responsible for this was nevertheless Mr Berlusconi himself as president of AC Milan. This modernization in club football lead to a 25 years long series of successes in European cups between 1980 to 2005: 6CL (11 finalists), 4 CWC (6 finalists), 7EL (13 finalists and 4 all Italian finals). At the same time the "3 foreigners" limit for players allowed many smaller clubs to win the Serie A and even European Cups, something unimaginable today: Naples, Roma, Verona, Sampdoria in the 80s — Lazio, Parma and Roma again in the 90s and beginning of the 00's. The state of Serie A today is a clear consequence of its glorious past. The big money, the big players, it all ended up collapsing. And that is going to happen sooner or later also in other countries.
Vercetti42
Football is declining in Italy to be honest, no world class players anymore. I've seen a few Serie A matches and the atmosphere was bland and the stadiums empty. LA Liga would have collapsed by now if it wasn't for Barca or Real and (to an extent) Atletico. SouthLand
€20m for a 30 year old CB. Well done Barca... I am so happy, I hope Zubizarreta and FC Barcelona's president Bartomeu stay forever! He looks like he is 50. No wonder...

The times of Shevchenko and Kaka in their prime at Milan, Adriano at Inter, Van Basten and Gullit at Milan were a reason to watch Serie A. I know Italian clubs are performing well, but no true topstars play there for a long time anymore.

Vercetti42
I wouldn't mind him being used as a backup but judging by the price it looks as though he is going to make the first team... And if we're going to use him as a backup after paying 20 million, that is going to make things worse. Things are looking very bad for us. A J
If anything wouldn't the decline of Serie A, bring about a change in club policies of developing players rather than buying in? Also I don't think the corruption and match fixing ever helped the league either. That plus the ultras who have forced some teams to play without crowds! I think it's also a case of the french and german leagues getting more investment too.
Doc Rikowski
There is a huge amount of things that need to be changed in Italian football but right now there isn't the political will. Not only the politicians' will but also the will of the ones who actually run the FIGC (Italian Football Association) and the League. There are FIGC elections soon and the candidates are two: one from the usual political establishment and the other one is former player Albertini, an honest man who loves the sport. I'd love for him to win it but it will be very hard. The ultras are another huge problem. As huge as hooligans in England in the 80s. Possibly worse than that. Among the clubs the only one projected in the future is Juventus. Attention to the economical aspect, to the youth sector and Italian players. The only club in Italy, and the first one, to own a stadium. Others seem now following Juve steps: Roma, Cagliari... It's a long way to go. Banks.
We've just beat LA Galaxy 7-0. Pre-season game yes but you can already see the changes van Gaal is making. Ander Herrera is some player, watch out for him this season.
Shoumaker
Liverpool lost to Roma, couldn't watch the game since my net was being abysmal. Anyone here seen it? Not so happy with the pre-season results so far. Was also hoping we'd pick up some defenders too, we'll see in time.

Vercetti42
Well pre-reason results can mean something, sometimes. United lost their first pre-season game under Moyes last year and ended up losing pretty much everything.

Means that they must be the favourites for the Prem this year then.

GTA_stu
We're not doing an Asian/American tour this year, just staying in Europe playing the likes of Werder Bremen, Real Sociedad and Vitesse Arnhem, and some other teams you've probably never heard of. I was kind of surprised really, but it could play into our favour.
