It's quite a smart ploy from Fergie when you think about it. Dropped points in a game they were expected to win, but he's managed to big up the incident so that everyone's talking about it. I doubt it could've killed him, but if that was Fergie's ploy then it's one that's a good one.

 

As for the incident, it was stupid from Williams but came out of frustration. I doubt he went in deliberately trying to hurt RVP. It's the sort of thing most of us have probably done playing with our mates out of stupidity when we're angry. The reaction was too much from Van Persie, but again it could've hurt him so you can understand why.

Fergie just said it as a heat in the moment sort of thing. He couldn't have been killed, it could've been worse, but saying he could've been killed is a bit over the top. Uh, if Van Persie's neck muscles were relaxed (which, given that he had just fallen over after a tackle and obviously didn't have full control over his motor functions, is assumable), then the sudden impact of a ball being hit directly at his head could have been disastrous. He could have received a terrible concussion, and his neck could, potentially, have been injured as well. Thankfully, for Van Persie's sake, this didn't happen, but I feel that people are using this as an opportunity to jump upon Fergie's comments in an effort to portray Van Persie as a weak c*nt, when legitimately and medically, he could have received some head trauma from actions such as that. This isn't a football issue, this is a medical one, so people need to look past all hyperbole and rhetoric if they want to talk seriously about how dangerous this was.

 

Having said that, though, Fergie's comments were an overreaction. I don't think Williams deserves a ban, and I think that the referee yesterday handled it superbly, following the scuffle between the two. We just need to be thankful that it didn't end up worse than it was.
