And regarding the chelsea manager situation, I've got to say I was quite shocked with this one. You kinda had the feeling with AVB and pretty much all the ones before, but I didn't see it happening to RDM. I really think he deserved the chance to have longer than he was given, albeit on the verge of going out of Europe.

 

Glad to have a clean sheet at last. Got to say when it's been that long you really do start to draw parallels between football and wetting the bed as a youngster, or in my case current day. You wouldn't normally feel proud for having not pissed the bed, the same as you wouldn't normally feel particularly proud of not conceding a goal. But when it's been that long, it feels damn good.

stu ma boy, could you answer this one, I know you are not all Chelsea fans-in-one or can answer for all of them, but why are Chelsea fans going to be booing Benitez, when really they should be booing the plank (or plankski) that put him there?

 

I would have thought that it's not really Benitez's fault that Di Matteo was sacked, I only ask as years ago when Swailes was in charge at City (when buffalo roamed plain) we booed him not the managers (except Alan Ball... cause he was sh*te), so why aren't Chelsea fans booing him. I know he's brought money to the club, but now they've got some silverware under their belts, they can continue to attract big names without his monehz and do it under their own steam with an ownership that isn't so knee-jerk.

 

If I was, and I shudder at this thought, a Chelsea fan I would fear greatly for the club, as the rate they are going through managers is fast getting them the reputation as a poison chalice club, and not only that they're going to run out of top class managers to pick from, without recycling them and the way most of them have been treated I couldn't see any of them wanting to go back.

I'm glad you asked.

 

The fans can't hate Roman because of what he's done for the club, he's made us what we are today. He's an incredibly private person who never gives interviews, but at the same time we like his personality (whatever that may be). He does have a passion for the game and he isn't merely in it for the money like other owners (I.e. Glazer who I believe I'm right in thinking has never even been to Old Trafford). We see him as an actual fan and he comes to every game that he can, and although there is constant speculation that he's growing bored of Chelsea, he's been with us nearly 10 years now. Then there's also the buffer in the form of Gourlay and Buck, who tend to take the brunt of it rather than Roman, rightfully or wrongly.

 

But the main reason that we don't like Benitez, is because quite frankly the guy was a c*nt to us. It's not just that we used to have a bitter rivalry with Liverpool back when they were still a regular top 4 team, including them knocking us out of the Champions League to a goal that never was. He made some comments like mocking Chelsea for giving out flags to it's fans and saying that Liverpool fans didn't need to do empty gestures like that. I forget exactly what it was but it was something to that effect. He made other similar comments as well. We spent a lot of time on that flag thing man, you can't just go around saying sh*t like that, it's just not done. He was way out of line.

 

But besides flaggate, his management of the enemy, his terrible terrible beard and his general c*ntish whining fat Spanish face, we just don't like him. And I think people are a bit frustrated at the management by the choice to appoint him, but it's a lot easier to attack the outsider who we already disliked rather than attacking our own, regardless of whether we agree with their choice or not.

I don't know how this has happened to Joey. As a foreign language speaker myself (German) it wouldn't occur to me to sspeak English in a German accent. I do speak German with an English accent though, which I think is quite cool.

I hope Man United do something for Dave Sexton at the next home game. He was the Man U manager when I first started going to OT to watch them in 79-80. They played good football, but it was the results that did for him - too many nil-nils and one-nils. A thoroughly nice bloke, but United were craving something a bit more exciting at that time. I see, I was mainly wondering cause I thought it was a sort of protest by proxy, I didn't realise there was all that other history with Benitez in particular, so I can understand that part now. However I still think that Roman needs to calm down with the constant managerial changes, for reasons I mentioned above, simply because it pains me to say this and bagger, nate, Tommy etc can go all smug when I say this, but look across the Irwell and see how long Bubble Gum Boy has been in charge there and what managerial stability does, granted Arsenal's cupboard is a little bare recently, but that's only cause Manchester has stolen all his players.

 

I could listen to the argument all day about how many trophies Chelsea have won despite the managers, but what I find scary is, what if they had persisted with a manager for a lot longer, they could've ended up doing a Barca every season. I say scary, cause it would end up like the SPL was when it was Rangers and Celtic every year, and that was sh*t.

And regarding the managers, stability doesn't always breed success. Fergie has won sh*t loads, and is the one that everybody loves to point to. But the success he's created isn't necessarily down to the fact he's been there a long time, it's because he's a damn good manager and easily up there as one of the best of all time. As much as that pains me to say. There are a lot of good managers out there on paper but giving them time isn't necessarily the best option to take.

 

The model we've used has by and large worked, maybe if we'd kept Mourinho we could have had more dominance, who knows. It's interesting to see how we will move forward and if Abramovich's mindset has changed, because in the past he was obsessed with winning the CL, and was in a rush to win it. But now he has won it he might, and I'd say he has changed his mindset in that he's looking to build more steadily now. And you can see that in the investments he's made in the players he's brought in, but also the longer term goal of trying to acquire a larger stadium. I mentioned it in the other post about how people say he's getting bored of Chelsea, but I honestly think it's bollocks. I see him as being in it for the long term, he wants to build a dynasty not to just have a reign. And he has a clear picture in his head of what that dynasty looks like.

 

I don't think he realistically ever saw RDM as the man to take Chelsea forward, and was always going to take the first opportunity to get him out the way. He has his eyes set on Guardiola, and has for a while, but he knew he wouldn't likely be able to get him until the end of this season. Sacking RDM wasn't because of his failure or his blip, it didn't really have anything to do with the lack of form Chelsea have been displaying of late, it was solely to get RDM out of the way. It wouldn't surprise me if he was actually relieved at the poor performances, as crazy as that sounds, because then he had his chance. He's proved in his past actions that he has the potential to be that ruthless.

 

Who really knows what goes on inside that head of his though.

So Luiz Adriano of Shakhtar has been banned for one CL-game.

I don't know what to think of this. On the one hand his behaviour against Nordsjaelland wasn't against the rules, so he shouldn't be punished at all.

Moving on to more pressing matters, I've got to say I'm happy that Shaktar player has had his comeuppance. UEFA can't bang on about respect and then let stuff like that happen. It was disgraceful what he did.

 

As for O'Neil, personally I do rate him as a manager. He's done wonders with Leicester in the past and did a very good job at Celtic and Aston Villa too. They haven't had a great start so far but it would be foolish to let a manager of his proven experience go, I mean who would they bring in? It's still pretty early in the season, I reckon they'll turn it around especially with the players they've got.
