Most pundits seemed to think it would be Poland and Russia going through, I guess because of home advantage and all that. But I always thought the Czechs along with the Russians would be favourites to go through. Poor Karagounis as well, stupid UEFA and their stupid rigid stuborn rules.

 

I'd like to wade in on this pitch argument, but being a chelsea support I can't exactly say much seeing as how we used to play on a beach. But I'll agree on Carroll's hair, get a f*cking hair cut fella and give it a shampooing every now and then. I felt so ashamed at half time when the camera followed him as he walked to the tunnel and he undid his ponytail and his lanky, dipped in a deep fat fryer, hair just hung there over his shoulders. Say what you want about the Greeks, but that Samaras looks after his hair. Then you've got Rooney and Welbeck with their own abominations, Ashley cole looks like a 10 year old, Lescott although he can't help it bless him looks a right state as well. We've got Parker living in the 50's and Ashley Young with his racist skin head. To be fair Hodgson has a decent hair line on him considering his age. Then we've also got David James as a pundit, which considering his haircut history isn't a great move imo.

 

Sure we're all there for football, but what about our image? With Becks out the picture we just fall to pieces.

That made me laugh . Despite me being a United fan, I can think of much worse stadiums than Anfield.

 

I'm slightly surprised Greece got through instead of Russia. Russia only needed a point and I thought they glide through. Aaah well.

Yeah eventually spotted it. Turned telly on for the 5pm game and got confused until i realised both were 7.45. Who were the two teams ages ago that just took it easy so both could progress to the next round? Sweden and Denmark?

You're thinking of Germany and Austria, I believe, at the 1982 World Cup. I think that brought about the simultaneous kick-offs rule. Also, gutted the Russians are out, wanted to see a bit more of Dzagoev and an in-form Arshavin. Hoping to see Dzagoev at some big club by the end of this summer, although CSKA are pretty big and I'm sure he's already on a fair wedge. Greece might stick to their game plan well, but they certainly suck all the fun out of football. At least group A's over with now, never expected it to be too entertaining.

You kids are hating on Greece (I guess some things never change), but I'm quite surprised with them. As I've said previously on the topic, Fernando Santos has been able to get them to play attacking football. I saw two of their games, and they weren't boxed cynically around their area. They built interesting plays in transition, and their last pass looked great. I just can't get those lobs over the defense out of my memory. I've never seen Greece do that, and, being Portuguese, I'm programmed since 2004 to dislike their football national team! They weren't any more defensive than Poland, I'd say.

 

You may disagree. I guess I just like Fernando Santos. He's a very experienced man, who has coached the portuguese big three, most importantly Porto, who never seemed to get his big break. He kept leaving to coach in Greece! We never got why, he just disappeared off our radar, bar from the occasional headline stating that he won this game or this competition. Now we see that he's genuinely beloved over there.

 

Besides, this Greece v Germany game is golden. First, I hope they beat them through the ballots, today. Then, I'll gladly turn on my suspension of disbelief and maybe cheer for them a bit in the quarters.

- the Dutch have failed to score in six of their last ten matches against Portugal

- ... who haven't drawn a game since '96 against Denmark!

- Holland have the biggest number of shots in the group, but the smallest number of goals scored.

- ... and their last seven goals in the final stages were scored before the 60th minute.

- They've also conceded in the 24th minute against both Denmark and Germany.

- ... while Pepe's goal against Denmark was scored in that very same minute.

The "battle of Nuremberg" was in the 2006 World Cup, not in 2004. Still, we won both games.

I have a funny, highly irrational feeling that Holland is going to shock Portugal here. But then again, what the f*ck do I know? A week ago I would've bet my car that Greece won't get out the group... Regardless of the outcome, I think we're in for an electric match of football.

 

I think Germany/Denmark will be pretty subdued. I understand that Denmark need a result and badly, but I can only see Germany running the show.
