iNero
Full Title: "your youth and party time is over when you hit mid 20s" - US mentality? Let me first say, that this is a rather serious question and not something I just came up with 5 min. ago. And Im already sorry for some bad grammar that will probably follow. So I was searching on google for something like "college at 25 yo", cause Ill start University at 25 here in Germany if everything goes like I want it to go. I googled for it since I thought that I would get more hits than when I searched in german. (Im 21 and it would be to complicated to explain the school stuff I made before. I got something, that is like similar to the first 2 years of community college in the US, at least it was when I researched it). Either way, when I googled it, there were several hits with guys and girls asking if you get the "college" experience at that age. ( most likely they mean the living together with other students and the parties and so on) The answers to this were mostly "yes". But also they said, that you might not party with the "traditional" student between 18 an 22 as they would probably see you as a "creep". That was strange to me tbh. In Germany, this is like no problem at all. Between 18 and mid 20s its like almost the same most of the time. You are like still a kid and slowly grow up in the late 20s. They almost look the same, they almost behave the same. ( ofc a 25 yo is a bit more responsible than a 18 yo ) I have friends who are 22 and are together with 17 yo ( this isnt a problem over here, there is no law that does forbid it, however if you wanna have sex with your GF who is under 15 while you are over 18, its not allowed when there is money paid for it. If you are over 21, you have to ask her parents first. But if she is older than 16, there is no problem anymore ). A 30 yo dating a 16 yo would be strange though. There is a list for it: Or I know somebody who is about 27 and is together with a 18/19 yo. I didnt even care about or noticed it until I googled the mentioned question. That being sad, I also searched for the average age of an US college student. And this surprised me after all. At community colleges its about 27. Than there are the "normal" colleges and universities where about 90% of the students is over 25. (not all of them had a 70-90% number, but quite a lot) The other thing is, that it sounded like those people who answered the question believed, that your party time is over at 25 which was even more strange. I know people around that age who party even harder since they got more money to spend on it. Those people on the internet seemed like they believe that life is over after the early 20s. I mean, by those standards, I would still be good atm, but its quite scarry, when people think that your time is over in like 3-4 years. So did I search on the wrong places, or is this like a US mentality, that your party life and youth is basicly over when you hit like mid 20s? iNero
That's just a weird generalization. Doesn't really make much sense to me to be honest. Well, I clearly said that I based this on the internet research I made. Obviously this doesnt represent all people, but there must be a somthing when most people think like that. At least at the many places I looked. (Forums and so on)
*MURDOC*
"Most people" you say.Calculate how many people you've seen post this and how many people in the age range you are referring to are in the United States, also add in that some of them might be depressed or stupid, or may change their minds in the next 3 months or so, hell you can even factor in different social groups and their common behaviors, which in themselves tend to be generalizations. Then think about what "most people" really means. Edited May 6, 2014 by *MURDOC* a20characterusername
Coin
I don't know, 25 seems like a really arbitrary number to produce as a stopping point, without much reason or rhyme in doing so. I vaguely recall reading an article last year (and no longer can remember where or even find it) that seemed to imply that your twenties is the best time to be partying, travelling or otherwise doing all the things that you might not be able to do once saddled with responsibilities, before then settling down in your thirties. I don't necessarily agree with that either, mind you.

Then think about what "most people" really means. And again. Most people. Simly most of the people who answered to those question. And this must have been about 100 or more. And almost all of them were in the US. Primarily because they either had it written in the bio, or simply because they said it in their posts. You can google it yourself and find the answer. Or why not simply explaining your take on that. Obviously you dont agree. But then give some explanation. I don't necessarily agree with that either, mind you. Thats how I see it. Atm at least. Growing up in the 20s and start settling in the 30s. I dont know if that can be called an "article" but its a collection of 25 reasons why the 20s are the best time of your life (according to them) http://collegetimes.com/2014/02/25/25-reasons-your-mid-20s-are-the-best-years-of-your-life Id say, you cant judge it until you are older and look back at all the different decades you lived through. Try actually reading my post and understanding what I said. 100 or more is pretty hugely far off what would constitute "most people". Obviously you dont agree. But then give some explanation. To be honest, I believe the answer is relative. There are people who feel that way and people who don't, but trying to break it down into what "most people" think is just not going to work. There's just not nearly enough information to provide a legitimate answer. Edited May 6, 2014 by *MURDOC*
iNero
Thats why I said most people who answered the question in those forums. I did not mean most people in the sense of most US citizens. I would be happy if the majority there thinks different. The thread title was simply a question. Edited May 6, 2014 by iNero

I would be happy if the majority there thinks different. Those people sound very uptight, I think you'll find that they are in the smaller percentage overall. They seem like they're really over-thinking life. There are plenty of people who want to have a good time for as long as they can, also there are quite a few who can manage to do this while living a fulfilling adult life. Hell, I'm going to be 30 next year and I'm not going to give up things I like in order to feel like I've "grown up". I'm going to be my silly-ass fun-having self until I die, life is too short to grow up too quick. It is possible to retain youth while maturing and gaining responsibilty. Not everyone can handle both though, and either get stuck as a boring worker drone or an irritating "WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!" person. I try to avoid both extremes of the people though. iNero
snip Yea, its just scary when you see people in their 20s acting like they will hit 40/50 soon. I should also mention, that there were quite a few on these forums, who said, that being in college mid 20 would be even better since they seem to get laid more often lol
Misbegotten cad
Problem is that you cannot party with pips who are under 20 years if you are like 25+ of age. -It's just weird, and you will just end up looking like a sad looser who cannot get that he is all grown up now. Of course you can still attend the parties, if A) you have been lying about your age to everyone, or B) you do not mind being thought as a party pooper and a looser. Graven
The fu*k is that kind of attitude? Life starts at 40s. And You should be working at last when 22, unless You are next Schopenhauer or Nietzsche. *MURDOC*
iNero
I dont see where the problem is. Most of the time you cant tell if somebody is 20 or 25. Why woulf your opinion change on a person just when he tells you a number? Like I said, it isnt a problem over here at all. Most of the parties are mixed with ages from 16 (18 for clubs) to late 20s and older. Even when I turned 18, we were in clubs like every week in the holidays. Sometimes a few days in a row. ( you can drink alcohol here at age 16 legally, only beer and whine though. the hard stuff with 18 ) And when I was 18 ( this sounds strange since it was only like 3 years ago ) I never had any problems. I didnt even notice if someone was older unless he was clearly beyond 30. The fu*k is that kind of attitude?Life starts at 40s.And You should be working at last when 22, unless You are next Schopenhauer or Nietzsche. lol. I worked for about 6 months ( aprenticeship ) when I was 15. I canceled it and did go back to school. Rather get some higher degree than working on a boring job. And going to school in the 20s is common. At least here. And if those numbers in OP are right, it also is in the US Edited May 6, 2014 by iNero *MURDOC*

Der_Don
I started University in Germany in 2011 and I was 23 at that time. I'm now 26 and in my last semester. Most people in my age are already doing their Master-degree so most of the guys you hang around with are around 20. And while it might not sound like a big gap, believe me, it is. At least that's what I experienced. I'll have my Bachelor's degree this autumn and I can't wait to finally leave university.

I was in school with people about 3 years older ( I was 17 they were about 20 ) I never had any problems. It depends on the person I would say. I dont see any difference between people my age and people in mid 20 to late 20s. It depends on how you develop yourself. if you get married at 24 or get a chield at 21, you obviously change you preferences and behaviour. Like I said, you barely can see a difference between early and mid or even late 20s most of the time. Edited May 6, 2014 by iNero
RiaJay21
I feel like I stopped partying when I was about 18. My friends started partying with much younger students when our 'school group' hit 18. Some of us went away to university, some didn't (I was one of the ones who didn't) and the 'kids' all came along. I remember a party we threw, when the police got called. Everyone under age had to hide in a tent at the bottom of the garden. There were about 5 of us left inside. Since then, I just felt ... really old. Before my time. I mean, I felt like one of the creepy ones. Like I had nothing in common with them (actually, I didn't - I was really into world cinema, indie films, transgressive literature - that kind of thing) ... so I got really drunk/stoned and spouted nonsense all night. That said, I think if the opportunity arose, I'd still be up for it. There was something strangely relaxing about being one of the only two people still awake in a room where everyone else had passed out, smoking, drinking, talking.
