Expanded Radar. Use?

In the Pause Menu / Online / Options is Expanded Radar. Does anyone use this set ON as their default? Does anyone find themselves using it often?

I like using the 4-way pad on Xbox to expand it when necessary to see if someone is following me or to see if the Securicar is near when it spawns. But I don't think I have ever needed to set the option to just keep it on. It removes the health bar for one thing.

Thoughts?

Nah, it would get in the way too much. I just use the d-pad method to look at the expanded map for 5-10 seconds.

Sir Michael

The health bar being gone is my biggest gripe with the extended radar... there isn't any other way to determine how close you're getting to death without it. :p

That radar also kills your vision pretty badly, especially on a non-HDTV.

Yup the d pad method is the way to go. Having it on all the time would be really annoying.

I'd keep it on permanently if it showed us our Health and lowered the opacity slightly.

In public sessions, yes.

When playing with friends, it's on default.

I keep it expanded permanently, I don't need health low warnings, Why because I'm that good. I just wish every damn mission on the map wasn't blue its murder trying to find a friends apt.

Actually wasn't the expanded map a 2D map while the normal radar is a 3D map? If you actually rotate the normal radar good enough you can see further.

no, its takes up too much screen space to be practical as a default, but i'm constantly using d-pad method.

I use the D-pad to activate it. I use it fairly often; it's pretty handy.

I use the expanded radar a lot, but don't set it to permanent because like someone else pointed out, it gets in the way.

I do wish your blip on the normal (small) radar was centered because when someone is behind you there's no instant way to see just how close they are, apart from pressing down on the d-pad which can be tricky if you're too busy driving like the wind. By the time their dot has become unstuck from the bottom edge of the small radar it's usually too late because they've rammed into you or thrown that sticky bomb (luckily they currently don't work on moving cars...)

It would come in handy flying.

I'd like if there wasn't the timer with the D-pad activation; I often find myself activating it for a second time on a row.

No, I dont keep it expanded, it removes the Health bar

My thumb is always pressing the down D-pad. It's my best friend for every occasion in GTA Online.

I used it permanently. I need to see who's close (not only very close) or I feel unsafe and always pressing down dpad is annoying imo. The missing health bar sucks, but I got used to play without and to get an idea of the distances. I only activated the smaller radar when I've had a gunfight in a very small area, like between the containers in the near of Simeon's garage.

I change to it if I am going to do some racing. Help's to see the route and the yellow markers.

I prefer not using it, the 3D gps is much better than a flat map

  • 11 months later...

Okay, I know I'm necrolifting an old thread, but in using the beloved Search feature, I could find nothing relevant to my question... not even the post I made about it which no one responded to, about a month ago.

Can anyone please please please tell me how to keep the Expanded Radar ON (using the XBox 360)?

Everytime I log into the game, I have to hit Start > Online > Options > Expanded Radar ON > B > B > B > B > B > B (mashing the B button).

But, when I log out, get disconnected, or Find a New Session, the small map comes back.

It's terribly annoying and I'm hoping one of you smart folk might have some insight.

Thank you in advance! Cheers! :) Here's a free picture of a fountain for your efforts.

I activate it manually. I use it to see if somebody is following or to see how far back the cops/NPCs are in missions/Heists

My health bar is a necessity.

D-pad is easier. I only need to use it to check if:

  1. Any players are close
  2. Any objectives are close
  3. Mendoza's been f*cking hit

Like already mentioned, I guess it would be useful when you are moving fast and covering a large area in a short space of time. Like flying. I'm no pro but the small radar isn't very useful whilst flying and I can imagine having to hit the d-pad every few minutes would get annoying if you are going for a flying session.

and as legend has it, it is said that the thread of the expandad radar use will be reborn exactly 1 year after it was first introduced to this world.

I play on a 55" TV and I can't play without it expanded.

I would've started using it sooner too but on ps3, when the radar was expanded, it would not display health or armor.

I have used it a bit on pc and ps4... I hate how the "new" versions of the game only have the player blips show up for those that are close to you... ESPECIALLY when bounty hunting

I definitely prefer the D-pad. Only thing that kinda sucked, on current gen, was getting use to sometimes having to hit down 3 times due to the size of the lobby.

I became accustomed to using d pad down on ps3 constantly to see what was going on. Unfortunately its all screwed up on ps4 with the double lobby names. It just fs with my mind. Two taps three taps, who the hell knows taps. That's the worst thing in the game currently for me and I refuse to play in a lobby where the names fill two screens until rockstar fix it. Its really really unnatural and annoying. A control in a game should never change from two taps to three taps as the game is ongoing. That is a maximum and basic game making error.
