How are some of you so quick with your sniper rifle?

There are many aspects of this game that I excel at. I can fly well, win car races, win shoot outs, etc. But for the life of me I am horrible with the sniper rifles (regular & heavy).

I've searched the forum a little can't find quite find the exact topic of "hints/tips" for sniping. I'm not interested in good sniping spots or stories of your extreme shots. I'm interested in how to get better.

1. How do you so quickly find your target in the scope?

2. How do you adjust for the sensitivity in the thumb stick, especially on a moving target?

It takes me forever to find my target in the scope and 3/4 of the time I'm sniped myself before I can even get them in my reticle lol. I do start with the "wide" view in order to try to see them in the bigger window and then zoom in once I see them but I'm still taking way too long. I can't snipe someone out of a chopper or car to save my life but I'll be damned if people don't get me pretty frequently like that!

Am I missing something? I started playing this game in late February and quickly ranked up to a 115 through hours of playing but I'm definitely not getting better at sniping.

i mostly use the minimap to find the general area of my target. scope in and find em.. most times i'm too quick moving left and right and i'll over adjust,

moving target I just move ahead of them and let them cross my " dot "

you'll get it in time

not that many kills but its satisfying seeing them flip back or the head kick back.

I hate sniping because of the dead zone and overshoot of the controller. It's the most frustrating thing ever. Same for free aim, obviously. I don't know how people get used to these damn controllers. Similarly, when mostpeople drive, they just bang-bang the steering right-left because it's impossible to control with any finesse.

See your target before they see you.

Lead the shot if they are moving.

A headshot is nice but not always needed.

Anticipate the roll...its over used and not effevctively so.

Last but not least learn their tactics and be patient....the cooler head will prevail.

Alright i'll share some tips. I'm a beast with the sniper on GTA, it's hitscan. Rubbish on games like Battlefield at it though.

Firstly, target finding. Biggest tip - tap down on your d-pad (brings up cash, player list etc) when scanning an area with the scope at draw range. If somebody you can't quite make out is there due to darkness or murky backgrounds, or sometimes even when they're hiding behind cover, their name will appear briefly above their head in bright white text marking them out. Very, very useful. Kind of wish I hadn't made this tip public.

Secondly, learn to gauge distance and location correctly using the minimap - it can be difficult to tell at times, but you improve the more you use it. Double tap down on the d-pad to bring up a larger minimap, zooming through your scope also increases the range.

When sniping outside of draw distance, learn to spot cars being driven by players by their more erratic movement. When aiming at a stationary target, zoom out slightly to make it easier to line up with the head. When aiming at a moving target, fire very slightly ahead of the direction of travel; get used to making a slight thumb movement in that direction simultaneously with pressing shoot.

When in a snipe-off, make sure you know exactly where the other player is. If you don't, you're going to fire second, and players like me will kill you every single time. Reposition yourself by going off radar. Don't zoom in further than you have to before shooting. I find lower levels of sensitivity are better in this game, get used to aiming near your target and then quickly refining the shot. Practice makes perfect.

Lastly, heavy sniper. If you're using the regular one, don't be surprised you're being out sniped. I was good before level 90, pretty much a roving rooftop death machine afterwards. It's a one hit kill weapon about 80% of the time, whereas it takes at least 2 regular sniper shots to the body to put down a high level player. For some reason, it also feels nicer and more accurate. Maybe that's just my imagination, but i've got a hell of a lot of kills with it since buying it. Never gets old to make somebody do a full flip from the impact of a heavy sniper shot to the chest.

CarimboHanky

just practice a bit...

always locate your target in your minimap.

if the target is moving on foot, hold your ground til you see it.

if the target is moving vehicle or simply running, lead the shot.

aim for the body as it easier.

then practice, practice, practice!

My number one sniping rule in a gun fight is:

Whoever is looking through their scopes first wins.

If I kill someone and they spawn and pull out their sniper and start scoping before I do, I abort trying to snipe them and try to get as close as I can for either free aim or auto-aim to kill them with an assault rifle. If you can bring up your sniper scope before them and locate them before them, you will win because you will snipe them faster.

Also, if you see a dot standing still on the minimap when in a gun fight, don't try to snipe because they are already trying to snipe you. Run and find cover and an advantage point to kill them, without an sniper, before they kill you.

I got the LSPD tint with the heavy sniper so damn fast, can even "quickscope" with it lol :D
if you play on free aim you get used to aiming for the target manually and your personal shooting ability and comfort increases rapidly, i recommend playing gta 5 story with free aim and when you are comfortable then play online, once you are used to that sniping will be a breeze.

I use the hip-fire crosshairs to help me determine where my target is and where the overall shooting area is. Once he's in my crosshairs boundaries (assuming that you're using the detailed crosshairs) I just aim in and take the shot.

The one thing about sniping is to not panic. When you panic, you missfire. When you missfire, your target runs. When your target runs, you have to readjust. And when you have to readjust, you end up getting shot. Don't panic.

It takes practice. Make sure they are not already pointing right at you. Once you have target zoom in. As you learn just roll if u feel its taking too long or you see them aiming, take cover and reset or find a new spot. Don't be in a hurry to die when you are not good or out matched. I turn away so they think I am going away or leaving and reset again then you can get a quick shot if they did not move as you know the area already.

I sometimes roll one way then back the other if I get caught off guard and realize someone is trying to snipe me and I am exposed. Most people try to lead you and this has saved me.

As mentioned, rarely does Heavy Sniper need a head shot so take the bigger target and go torso unless you are trying to score headshots, but if it's a sniper battle I don't like to lose any time flicking for the head.

The shooting is correct, but the steering is completely untrue. :)

Or you could just make sure you're in a good position where your target can't see you. That's how real snipers operate. Flank them or pin them down until they make a mistake.

If you try quickscoping you're going to get killed mote often then not. No matter how much everyone talks up their fully sick quickscopez ability.

For a guaranteed kill wait for them to come to you and make sure your in a good location. Rooftops, behind cars and hills. Follow their movement pattern while scoped in and aim for the centre of mass as it's more likely to hit.

Coveted is also really good practice. All the much more so when you are playing with some idiot that charges the cove causing all of the enemies to take cover. Sniping a tiny portion of a head that randomly pops up while shooting from a hundred yards or more will make you a better sniper. Sometimes I'll intentionally alert them so that I have moving targets to practice on.

-sensitivity is 1-2 "clicks" under the standard middle (mine is on -2)

-check minimap for the direction to aim

assuming the sniper is already selected i quickly start zooming into the dircetion and while i zoom i try to spot the target and be on it when i have zoomed in.

very often i move my left thumb for correction and trigger the shot nearly simultaneously which leads to a hit most of the time.

i dont double check, i just shoot.

I have it on higher because I like to take out multiple targets.

OT: One key thing is map knowledge, knowing when you're in a good position and when you're in a bad one to get in a better sniping spot.

There's one little tip if you want to improve your aiming skills:

USE THE STANDARD SNIPER RIFLE

I had to start from scratch as I moved from xbox to ps3 and now I don't have the heavy sniper anymore, so now when I use the sniper I tend to aim to the chest/neck/head area more, as the normal rifle doesn't normally kill in 1 shot, so you need headshots most times if you want to kill in 1 shot. Sometimes if you are lucky you'll kill if you hit the upper chest/neck (Which sucks because your only chance against someone that has the heavy sniper is aiming 3x faster than him and shooting him in the head real quick, otherwise they'll be able to aim at whatever part of your body and kill you)
