Most boring book you've read?

Recommended Posts

I cucked Alex Jones

f*ck everyone who mentioned Shakespeare. Don't dismiss some of the greatest works of English literature just because you were to busy staring at the girl who sat beside you's tits to pay attention. The Outsiders was great as well, so yeah, shut the f*ck up.

You know what sucks? Anything written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The most boring works I have ever read.

Macbeth, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, the Bible.

I dunno man, Agony precludes boredom.

Seventy page rant incoming.

the Bible.

The bible's f*cking awesome; such violence, misogyny, hatred & merciless ignorance all around.

If they made a real film adaption (not that Charlton Heston bullsh*t) for it, using such parts like the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 22, verses 13-21....Oh damn.

If you're too lazy too google it, here it is:

13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels[a] of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.
20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.

Considering I enjoy books that most people would find boring ... I'm not sure my opinion counts. I work in a library. So, yeah.

I wouldn't say 'boring', but some of the worst books I've read? Twilight is one. Or the series, I don't know. I read it for the sake of pleasing a friend/trying to understand what he was talking about (did they have the patience to do the same with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? No.) It was just ... it infuriated me. I skim read it. I hated every second of it. The bad quality of the writing, mostly. And I don't care how depressed your protagonist is, there is absolutely no need to dedicate a single page to the name of each month.

In the same vein, I had a quick flick through 50 Shades of Grey when my mom was reading it. I already knew it was bad and had no interest in the book. But ... the fact it was published, and sold so many copies is a joke.

The Qur'an. What a load of unintelligible crap. The Bible is at least fun to read like a collection of fairy tales. The Qur'an could only ever appeal to a complete and utter moron.

Can I recommend a book? If so, please go read Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce. You will not be disappointed.

The hatchet

Boo! That's one of my favorites! I love Gary Paulson.

My choice is Animal Farm.

I may have just been too young to "get it", but barnyard animals don't make politics any more enjoyable.

As far as religious texts, go, I'd have the Qur'an over the Bible every single day of the week. But even then, it still ranks rather low in comparison to others. Personally.

Biohazard Abyss

Animal Farm sucks, even if you fully-understand. The Hatchet is hilarious if you get one of the tapes that reads it for you because of how Gary Paulson wrote it.

@Bio, I liked his use of hyphens. It invoked a feeling that someone was telling me his tale in a non-scripted, off the cuff manner. But, this thread is not about books we enjoy.

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe was absolute trash. I'm sorry, but that book was just a pain to read.

The more I sit here and think about it, I realize that I've never actually loathed reading a book (unless I can remember one/some after making this post), I just despised the assignments that came with them.

Analyze X theme(s), how impactful do you think this novel was during it's time of release, what was the main message that the author was trying to convey, why were the curtains red in chapter 3, etc. etc.

I honestly wanted to say reading Orwell's 1984 sucked dick, but it didn't. I felt that way because I was fed up with the whole "analyze everything and anything, but be original and don't come up with someone else's analysis" and all that jazz. It's a lot easier to say "this book sucks, I hated reading it" than to say "these assignments are stupid, f*ck school kill people burn sh*t".

As for leisure reading, I can safely say I have yet to read a book that made me disinterested.

Stay gold Nipperkins....stay gold.

I got assigned that book in fourth grade. Liked it. Movie was meh.

OT: Never hated any book I've read, at least not as a whole.

BrownBear

If I find a book boring I usually just stop reading and start another, I used to have to read through once I'd started but I see no point in that anymore.

I can't think of any books I really haven't enjoyed, though it would probably be something old and dry, a quick glance at Dostoevsky nearly put me to sleep, though I do mean to read his works.

Every single book is boring as hell, except the ones with bunch of hot women in it, either than that I wish I could burn every single book.

This is the most depressing thing I've read this year.

Catcher in the Rye was one of my favourites as a kid, but I never had to read it in school. Reading books for school kills the enjoyment if you ask me.

On topic: GCSE IT revision guides. I bet a significant reason for our lack of programmers here is how badly IT is presented and taught at school--just puts you off.

Catcher in the Rye.

...Was a really good book that everyone seems to hate. But to be honest, as much as I enjoy reading sometimes I can never bring myself to read most the books our highschool wants us to read. I have no doubt that they are technically great, but I want to read what I want to read, not what they want me to.

You nailed the issue here.

This issue seems common to all education systems no matter where you are from.

School does a great job in pretty much making you hate reading books while you are a student.

There are exceptions but usually it all depends on how good is your teacher.

I used to be completely not interested in books and literature while I was in high school.

There were a couple of books I enjoyed but most of the time I'd prefer a good comic book over any book.

That's because school treats books and literature just as they treat every other discipline: something you need to study and learn.

Literature and books are pretty much the opposite of that.

Literature is an art and a pleasure just like music or any other form of art and entertainment that you enjoy.

Once I was done with school I started to read.

And just as you said I started to read "what I wanted to read and not what they wanted me to".

Becoming a reader is possibly one of the best thing that happened in my life.

I love literature and I love books.

I could live without gaming, without TV, without movies, without internet but I doubt I could live without reading or without music.

Animal Farm, Catcher in the Rye and other books mentioned in this topic are actually very good.

I mean, I enjoyed them.

If you read them at school chances are you didn't like them cause they told you that you had to read them.

Give those books a second chance and you might love them or hate them again, but at least it will be the opinion of a free reader rather than the one of a forced one.

Well sorry but reading books is just not my thing. It's soo boring and if I try to put an attempt in it I'll just stop 4 pages in and never touch it again. Even tho picture books for little kids, I'll get bored and never read it or take couple of years to finish it.

My attention span's not great either mate.

I know you claim to be unable to read "picture books", but maybe you should give graphic novels a try. Graphic novels are often very engaging.

This book is absolutely excellent, and is filled with paintings of insanely hot women (your sole criterion for reading material). It's also violent as hell too, so appeals to one's inner sadist/GTA player:

I'd also recommend the Killing Joke by Alan Moore if you like Batman.

EDIT: Might like Judge Dredd, too
