The Official Combat Tips Thread

Ok - I have almost 3k online player kills and hover around 2.x k/d ratio. I have used a tank 11x (306 player kills) - Carbine around 1900 kills - sniper about 500 (combined reg. sniper + heavy) and about 300 buzzard kills. I'm assuming I'm a pretty typical player and don't consider myself a tank griefer. I know that many players will have better tips to contribute then me so I thought I'd kick it off to see what kind of useful info we can add to this thread:

Weapons - Use them wisely. I've learned the hard way that my trusty carbine rifle has limitations (although it's still the best overall weapon) The assault shotgun is great for close range and blowing people out of cover (like when they are just at the corner of a wall or ducking below a car/wall etc. Stick bombs, with their wide blast radius are great for knocking people out of cover also

The Map - Know the map well. If you are sniping long distance you don't have a chance unless you have a handle on the map. Also using the map in close combat situations can burn you if you guess wrong - some players don't even use the map/radar much when in close combat.

Cover - Use it wisely. You're a moron if you run down the middle of the street or stand in the middle of a lawn or sidewalk when fighting. Take cover and make it harder get a fix on you.

Cover Part 2 - Don't over use it - some players are so concerned about getting killed it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy - If you stay in cover (at the corner of a wall or duck low behind something - etc) too long a good player will blast you out with a shotgun - bomb or even the minigun. If you are in cover and the enemy is approaching but suddenly stops and stays in the same area (next to your cover) too long then you are probably about to die - I would recommend you to take a chance and jump out of cover or pedal backwards and re-group.

These are just some tips I threw out - I'd like to see who has the best tips for combat situations where there's multiple players killing each other in a small area - like some of the LSC massacres that happen frequently. Can any player under those circumstances (random re-spawning - random lag - etc) have a clear advantage over the others????

Thought I'd add some more stuff...:

Find Your Opponent - This seems obvious but when you are in combat with another player the first one to figure out exactly where the other is usually wins - especially when re-spawning. Players that have played a lot of shooters like Call of Duty - etc - usually have an advantage. In many cases you can't just run to cover and wait - you or your opponent spawn in kill distance and nobody is going to be able to turn their back and take cover without getting smoked.

I'd like to see someone contribute to using explosive devices in combat - this is my weakness - I'm not very good at blasting players out of cover. I'm shocked at how little response I've had so far yet I see dumb ass threads like - ways to improve the Maze bank phone app (are you kidding?????)...

Once u make a kill keep it moving if u stay in the same place u dead. I as we'll am horrible using explosives while in combat but I've gone against guys who are quite good. I prefer to use guns in hand to hand combat though so I've never really practiced that much with explosives

Some more tips -n- tricks:

The Combat MG is much better for free aim kills that are just past auto-lock then the carbine. It's good for killing players in cars - does more damage then the carbine.

If a player is up against a wall corner or even a square object like an air conditioner the RPG can be used to blast the opposite corner or opposite side of the object (like an air conditioner) and the shockwave will kill your opponent.

Combat Rolls don't impress me - I can always time my shots and kill the player as they are just ending their roll

If a player in a car is closing on you just get out of your car - take cover - and destroy them while they are approaching in their car - the player in the car is always the most vulnerable. Same thing with a buzzard - if they are chasing you swerve around a corner - get out - take cover and take the buzzard down when they try and to do a low front dip to fire a rocket on you.

Ducking below a ledge works great when you are higher then your opponent - but when they are the same level or higher then you are exposed.

I find the most effective method of combat to be as follows:

  • 1) Be the best.
  • 2) Win.
  • 3) Gloat.

How about somebody that's really good with grenades post some tips - proper cooking - bouncing off walls - etc?

Hello_losers

Spam rolls all day because for whatever reason :r*: think you should be invincible whilst doing it. Irks me so much since its not a evasive maneuver as it is so much a stupid invincibility frame where they are impossible to hit and thanks to lag, generally end up killing you while rolling. But a bit more useful tip is to not always use the "zoomed" aim but rather the right trigger aim to allow you to fire rather accurately without moving so slow begging to be headshotted. Applies more to free aim.

Learn to raise the cross hairs as you begin shooting, it will usually put the second shot in your opponents head, also gets you use to free aiming so when

someone chimp rolls you can track and kill him on the ground.

Im currently at 18.7k player kills with over 1'100 deathmatch wins. I've had the platinum award for grenade kills for months. I usually don't cook them but in deathmatch you just have to know where the players are going to be and lob grenades at that position. Using Lester to reveal players is great for smart grenade kills.

There are a lot of good maps for bouncing grenades too. For example on Vinewood kills the chimney is great for bouncing because the grenade will drop and roll down the roof usually to where the enemy is taking cover.

Main tip with grenades is always to know where your going to throw them before throwing lol.

If possible, always take the high ground. Accessible building roofs that provide cover by the ledge give you a good vantage point and put you at an advantage over your opponent. I also like to sticky bomb the top of the ladder then take cover far away to bait my opponent to follow me up. Once they step off the ladder, BOOM!

Abuse off the radar, flank around the player and kill them. Keep spawn killing and make sure the player doesn't get away and go down the pussy route towards fort zancudo.

If you have a friend with you just throw a sticky on their back and send them towards your target. Make sure they go passive, and once they're next to the target blow the sticky up.

Never go out of cover in auto aim if the target is also behind cover. Use RPGs and explosives to kill them.

Learn to quick scope if you play free aim:

ULTIMATE QUICKSCOPING GUIDE (P1):

Very effective once you get the hang of it.

Learn to use the buzzard and you can support friends and team mates by circling around racers targets, just check to see how damaged the buzzard is so that you can get a new one without being forced to land.

I love Team Deathmatch in GTA Online. By far the best part of the game when it works properly.

Don't be afraid to hold onto that grenade for a little bit!

Cooking frags is a great tactic. The player your up against can't dodge the blast.

It's really all in the timing. As soon as you hear that clicking, you know you've been holding it for too long, so get rid of it as quickly as possible.

That guy in the quick scoping video really needs to do something about his breathing in the mic! I couldn't even watch the video it was so annoying! Plus he sounds like he has bad breath! Someone should let him know :p

Teargas will prevent players from locking on to you as long as you're behind the gas. Perfect for changing positions or for taking advantage of your opponents lack of free aim skills.

FM Tips -

If you are going to do a drive-by, use a fast car with small windows ( Zentoro, E.g. )

Predict the enemies movement, Especially if there is a car chasing you, use sticky bombs to take care of em by lobbing into the paths and execute it at the right time

IMO, the special carbine is the most effective Assault rifle and the ap pistol has no recoil.

If you got friends/crew members with you, make sure you don't clump together as that makes easy targets for Tanks/Explosives/Cars.

Jets are more effective with the cannons!!! I always see dumbasses using rockets, while they may get a kill or two, they are not as effective as the cannon as the cannon can destroy multiple cars and kill several people in the same area more easily. However the rocket is more effective against other jets and perhaps buzzards, as other people will use the rockets.

Heavy sniper is one shot instakill anywhere on the body however if the target has some armour, he will survive.

Heavy sniper and musket have the ability to easily take out Jets and Helis, Around about 5-6 shots will be enough.

If you land one heavy sniper bullet in the thruster, i believe that will damage it greatly and it will cut out several times for a period of time untill it eventually cuts out

The Merryweather airstrike is really useless in FM however it is ok in TDM and may help greatly in LTS.

If there is a enemy tank and you have a tank, Do off the radar. Nearly all of the time, the enemy tank driver will forget about you and focus on helpless players and you can easily land 2-4 shots before he notices and turns around.

I think quite a few of these are common sense but it turns out alotta people don't know, I can't think of any more combat tips off the top of my head so yeah.

I don't know about you, but I think it's interesting how games can make us anxious. Yes, despite the fact that they're meant to be for entertainment and relaxation, they can make us anxious and paranoid. It's funny, actually. Man, I wish I could go back to the days when I played video games without that "Awww! Man! This sucks! This is annoying!" feeling whenever I lost a race or got killed. I feel like we need to get back into that blissful state of mind when playing video games. We didn't react this way as kids, and many of us got into gaming when we were kids.

First of all: get a decent internet connection, something that allows you to play without lag, because it's impossible to win if you can't see your enemy's movements and they can even shoot you while you're in cover;

Second: about wall breaching glitchers or god-mode zentorno glitchers, don't bother with them, it's my best advice, if anything just let them be or report them and switch sessions, it's worth NOT the time and money trying to fight them;

Third: Off radar is a great and cheap tool, but use it WISELY, if you are in the open that feature is useless as the enemy still can see you, also if you want to use that feature, make sure there's a way to escape to a new position without getting into your enemy line of sight;

Fourth: Passive mode is a plain useless feature, trust me on that, you're better off killing yourself via suicide in the intereaction menu;

Fifth: If you want to roll with your friends, make sure you set your friendly fire properly to avoid shooting them;

Sixth: Don't stick around in cover for too long, even if your enemy is also in cover, if he has explosives he can still kill you if he's skilled enough in using them;

Seventh: As already mentioned, go for the headshots to save your ammo;

Eighth(?): Sticky bombs are EXPENSIVE, use them wisely, preferably in secluded spots where you know your enemy will be;

And finally: Rolling, spam it a lot;

While aiming you can hold x to move a little bit faster, just to throw them off a little.

Is there anyone who fires without aiming their gun? Been practicing in gang attacks and it feels good having the extra speed.

Just briefly take your aim off of them as they roll, then quickly put your aim right back on them as they assume up right position and BANG. You just have to have better timing skills over the opponent.

Best way to blast someone out of cover is to use an RPG if it can get to them (nothing in the way like crates ETC)
