I was browsing the interwebzz and found this. If we apply this to gaming I think it's very true indeed! Basically it says the test children lost the desire to help adults when they were rewarded for doing so. Apply it to gaming and viola! People don't enjoy the sole experience and are merely in it for the reward (look at people who basically play this game for RR).
