Friends/girlfriends

Who else loves to hang out with them as much as I do? I know most people seem to hate this feature as they call "every 5 minutes", but to be honest this is one of my favourite things about IV.

Remember in SA how hanging out with the girlfriends was rather bland? The thing that still impresses me in IV is how they give feedback.

The fact they comment on the clothes you wear and the car you drive is simply remarkable. Almost like they're living, breathing souls with actual memories and feelings.

Perhaps R* could've done more with the activities, but just listening to their stories is worth hanging out with them.

Simply I think it's one of the most underrated features in the series.

I liked it, too bad they didn't include this feature in V.

It's in GTA V, but it's horribly dumbed down.

Yeah, the cool thing about it is that you can call both protagonists to go out. The rest is pretty much useless.

Girlfriends? f*ck no. Denise in SA is better than all IV girlfriends, she wanted to do drivebys, and they had better rewards.

I do like hanging out with Brucie and his girls on Helicopter rides, flying under the bridges and between buildings.

Where are these I haven't seen any yet but I have gone down to the beach here and there and grab a hooker

Yeah, especially the part when you drive straight to the docks and jump off the vehicle before the car falls to water, to enjoy seeing these annoying idiots drown.

Friends system was one of the great features of IV. Niko was meeting new friends and we were learning about their life and participate in cool side activities. There were also awards waiting for us, completely optional but worth to get (I was using many times Kiki's ability - even after Late Checkout or other missions). It was also nice how people with established long time friendships (Johnny and Luis) got less calls than Niko.

It was so terribly done in V I am not even sure why they added it. For the sake of having it like the businesses? It would be better to cut them both out than include feature so weakly done. Not only there are no places to go, no reason to do it, but there are not even people to meet. Seriously there are two protags, useless Jimmy and Lamar/Amanda? Why the hell the feature is even there? And why we had people like Mary-Ann in our phonebook when you can't even call her to meet or something. Eh, this game is wrong on so many levels.

I don't particularly like to hang out with friends/girlfriends in the game to be honest, and I rarely do, but I do enjoy some of the activities like pool, bowling etc once in a while. When they call is also the only time I would ever go to a show or whatever, which is a nice little distraction from the rest of the game for a couple of minutes. But again, it's something I only do on a rare occasion when I'm bored. About 99.99% of the time, I just refuse to answer any calls. I'm actually surprised that Roman still loves Niko so much in my game because of how much I ignore and avoid him haha (and everyone else for that matter).

I wasn't crazy about the girlfriends, but the abilities of Carmen and Kiki were worth putting in a friend activity. They were deliberately unlikable except for Kate and Karen, but they seemed more like friends.

As for the friends, yeah, I wish that returned in fuller force. The fact they might remark upon something that recently happened in the story with amusing and witty dialogue was worth taking in while riding or driving around the city. Plus, it gave you an excuse to attend things like cabaret or stand-up shows which actually managed to stay entertaining for their lengthy durations. The minigames were also pretty fun. All V offers is drinking, strip clubs, and tennis, I miss pool and air hockey...

The thing that impressed me the most was the shear number of friend dialogues present. I've gone through at least 15 or so in TLaD and haven't encountered anything repeated. Each dialogue is rich and varying. One time, you'll be talking about Clay's service in the Vietnam embassy, or Terry's crazy meth-addict born-again Christian brother, or even developing something intricate about the characters like Johnny's stance on the armed forces.

The one thing I must commend V for was the ability to invite multiple friends. It was cool to see Michael and Trevor talk about pulling off "The Big One!" in their one on one dialogue before picking up Franklin and having all three of them talk about it.

Niko had this certain appeal to him that draws people in. He was a cynical bastard but it seemed that the people who showed loyalty can see that Niko is a good guy. Packie's father beating him when he was litlle, Dwayne getting 10 grand a week, Jacob and Badman's relationship, all things you can discover yourself. Subtle, but necessary. V didn't interest me much, but M ng pro in football would have been something.

We need more activities I would like to take kiki to middle park and have a romantic picnic just because niko murders people doesn't mean his not romantic. Theirs some diving boards in broker I always thought it could be a fun place to take Michelle.

I mean we don't get to see a cut scene of the date like in san andreas so why not add little things like this ? It would give us more options and choices for dates which would be nice.

I've beat the game more times than I can count which is the reason im over thinking it so much but it would be cool if you could take dates to random destinations like the church and have it count as a date. they should do a mini dlc for it I reckon

Also why can't I take mates/ girlfriends on helitours ? I know brucie has his own heli so we don't need it for him but it would be perfect for everyone else :) they have the activity their already why not make full use of it ?

hell why can't we take them to races with us that would create some hilarious dialog I would love to see how kiki would react

What about taking two people out at the same time ? that would be fun and interesting.

I understand why they couldn't go into that much depth with it when they created the game but why cant they make a dlc and add stuff like that ? it would be amazing. Add in fire fighting missions ect with it and charage $10 for it. I would buy it for sure. i'm not talking about adding anything to huge but a bunch of small things to make replay ability more diverse. Maybe even out the playboy/Dwayne rewards stuff like that.

I don't understand how we live in a dlc age yet they let games that are ''old'' rot ? seems like a waste to me

Honestly hung out with friends in this game more than V, due to the fact that I didn't know you can hang out with friends in V until I checked out the checklist after beating the story.

Even then, there's absolutely no one I'd love to hang out with in that game. None of them are as interesting as the ones in IV.

Besides they're only the characters the protagonists already know. You don't meet new characters to hang out with.

Not that's there's many interesting characters any way.

I can never understand what Lil Jacob is saying or even texting

Lil Jacob is the reason I now use subtitles in games.

In GTA IV or GTA V I didn't really use the friends system all that much in either game. It's just a part of the game that I dont really use and enjoy. If it isn't in the next GTA games it wouldn't really matter to me in all honesty.

I find I can understand LJ pretty well. Badman on the other hand...

I'll never forget the look on Niko's face the first he met him and LJ basically had to interpret what he was saying so Niko could understand lol.

I agree with you about the hanging out with friends and girlfriend dating features in GTA IV - it was really good to experience. It was a nice break from all the hectic, dangerous life violence and crime Niko went through on a regular basis in the game. Rockstar really put a lot of creative and imaginative thought into it, and they seamlessly and successfully implemented it within the gameplay structure. Rather than just hang out with friends or date women, there was actually meaningful, interesting and sometimes deep dialogue to go with it, it made the experience even all the more entertaining, along with large amounts of humor it already provided.

I know you don't like SA, but I do wish you would stop comparing it to IV which is a HD title and a console generation ahead of SA. SA is still incredible game for it's time with all the content and features it contains. But it's technology it's very old compared to IV, so constant comparisons between the two regarding technical features don't make much sense in most cases.

I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at here OG. I wasn't comparing GTA IV to SA on a technical level. All I was saying was it was bland in SA due to the fact the interaction between CJ and his girlfriends was nothing more than generic one liners.

I don't see what this has to do with technology considering this wasn't the case with other characters in the game.

I liked hanging out with friends in IV, because the conversation would be different every time. Plus, if you hang out with them enough, they'll really open up more and tell you things they probably haven't told anyone else.

The friendship system in V wasn't as in depth, but I'll still call other characters to hang out from time to time.

I probably did not explain myself properly, I should have done it better.

What I meant by technology, is that rather than criticize SA for having a bland girlfriend/dating feature, (a feature which you really like in IV), you really should be praising SA for it's innovation here, as it was the first GTA to introduce a feature that contributed to the improvement and variety of later GTA gameplay experiences, as in IV's case. SA first introduced the girlfriend/dating feature, but with IV, the developers had the benefit of greatly improving on the feature with newer, and better ideas. So here in IV, inevitably you have much better, in-depth dialogue and interaction to better the experience of dating girlfriends - thanks to the fact that the feature was introduced to the series by SA first. It was a feature that proved so popular in SA, and I'm very sure that Rockstar decided to continue it in IV and greatly advance it, to the big delight of some and annoyance of others. In this case, we generally agree here on this thread that it was indeed a very cool feature, and you have just described it as " one of the most underrated features in the series ".

So to turn around and slate SA's rendition of the feature as 'bland' is quite unfair, and arguably a bit ungrateful when you consider that SA set the precedent for this particular feature to be in IV. I really think you should put your dislike for SA aside, and just consider the point I'm making. I'm not saying I'm right or justified that's just my personal opinion based on my observation of your post.

@SoL Don't judge it based on the dialogues and girlfriends themselves. Hell San Andreas had better rewards for dating the damn bitches, not to mention they were picky and had their own preferences as opposed to IV girlfriends that don't care where you take them, which means SA girlfriends are more realistic! (Girl X likes buff men with high sex appeal, also likes steak, Girl Y likes guns and skinny men, ...)

From not losing weapons when busted, weapon pickups, police and medic uniform, free hospital service and keeping weapons after death (why is this a feature from the start in HD era as opposed to an unlock), old Hustler car, pimp suit, free pay n spray, monster truck, racing suit.

Sorry B Dawg, but how much time have you spent hanging out with the girlfriends in IV? They have their own preferences aswell. For example Kiki doesn't like fancy clothing, cars, restaurants etc.

If you take her to the Italian restaurant across from her apartment on the first date she won't have any interest in dating after that. Then again this is applied to the friends too.

Brucie doesn't like fast food or going to the cabaret club. I haven't tried every single possible scenario, but the strategy guide I have basically lists what they like to do and what they don't.

I liked hanging out with Dwayne & Packie. Just because of how depressed they were - it was hilarious.

Personally think Dwayne & Packie would've been best friends lol.

The best friend I really liked to hang out with was Dwayne. I really liked hanging out with him and listening to his stories about his depression, his rise and fall in the drug game, how the people he loves and cares about always take advantage of him, and his tough, hard life growing up in the hood - it was epic, classic stuff.

I liked Alex because she was fun and shallow and it was a change from the doom and gloom surrounding his life. I loved going to the Superstar Cafe and then diddly the ol' doodly and read all about it on her blog. Frying pan? Niko, you old dog, you.

I really enyoy hanging out with everyone. I've had this game for almost four years and have played through four times and I am still finding out new stuff about almost all of the friends/girlfriends. I hang out with Little Jacob and Packie the most. I wonder why LJ throws so many eColas out the window? :)
