Ah, the days of Quake and Unreal Tournament.... Probably the first shooters I ever bothered playing.

My father used to have a subscription to some PC magazine, and it often came with free demo software.

I actually think I may have salivated a little when I noticed that both games on the disk.

My father (at the time a casual PC gamer) ended up buying the full games... and of course, I ended up addicted to them.

I remember booting up the old Compaq PC and pretending to play pinball whilst I blasted frags with my shock rifle.

All this nostalgia reminds me of the time the demo for SWAT3: CQB was included... *drools*.

Or Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising.... :panic:

Hopefully, this "New" UT will just be a HD re-release of 99'.

Honestly, I'd buy that.

UE4 community did something like new "UT". They asked Epic's permission, and said they could only release it if would be another name, and their own assets. They already got some maps redone in HD I think.

I'm hoping they just do a full on HD touch to UT99.

The maps, the music, the feel... It just defines my childhood. The others aren't bad but they just didnt have to same feeling to them, '99 just had this realistic alien world thing to it that felt real genuine and nothing was out of place or overdone.

Great news everyone! The new Unreal Tournament will be free and is being developed by the UT community and Epic.

Here's a link for your viewing pleasure: http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/05/08/new-unreal-tournament-game-will-be-free-developed-by-epic-and-ut-community/

And here's a snippet on the free part:

Since it will in part be created by a community of volunteers, the game will be free when it comes out. Epic stressed the point that it will be just free, not free-to-play. However, it also said that eventually it will create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists, and players can buy and sell mods and content, or just give it away for free. Earnings from this marketplace will be split between the content creator and Epic, which is how it plans to pay for the game.

The Future of Unreal Tournament Begins Today.

Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.

Here’s the plan:

• We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
• From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.
• If you are a fan and you want to participate, create a free account and join the forum discussion.
• All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.
• The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS.
• Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.

So what’s the catch?

• It will take many months until the game is playable by gamers. This is real development from scratch.
• When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
• We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.

A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don’t yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we’ll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you’re a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder – or if you just want to learn how we make games – we hope you’ll join us. It’s going to be fun.

• In case you want to check out the classic Unreal Tournament games, we’ve put them on sale on Steam.

With this being open source, I can see it lasting for 10+ years. I'm gonna be all over this like ugly on your mama :pp

Edit: Just read that it will also have Oculus Rift support.

Wont happen. Almost certain. The game will be financed by players selling their mods.

On console MS and Sony would want some of the money too.

Apart from that there wont be many modders for Xbox or PS anyways.

And thats what Epics says:

Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.

As Unreal Tournament 99 is my all time favourite FPS and have lost countless hours playing it (and still do to this day), this is great news.

What iNero said. Plus it's open source and completely free.

In order to even get it on consoles they would have to pay fees, and Sony and Microsoft would take a cut of all the profits made on the game.

This is being made by a group of fans with the help of some devs from Epic, not an indie studio or the like.

"collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers"

The game will have some EPIC Games quality I guess. Since Epic is behind it, they will pay attention to deliver something that is good enough for an AAA developer.

Basicly its an Epic game.

There was a Fan Project ( I think it was called Open Tournament ) but I dont know how this is going.

The Game of the Year version of UT99 was insane.

I'm still playing the PS3 version of UT3. The game is even better with the UT99 maps I downloaded from ut3mod.com. You PS3 cats should check out the site.

Just a short video showing very pre-alpha footage of a deathmatch between the devs.

Still can't believe it will be free and open source.

As reported by PCGamer, a very very early pre-alpha build is available to be downloaded and played right now here. It's in a torrent file, so you'll need a bittorrent client to download it if you're interested.
