Were the references to past GTA games too obvious in V?

Marine, Rocco, and the UL Paper guy

WTF, where??

Marnie - The blonde chick who helps you with the Epsilom missions

Rocco - I believe he was in two of the three Solomon gives you

UL Paper guy - He was in "Monkey Business" and "The Wrap Up"

And for anyone else who's going to say Rockstar is giving us fanservice for bringing all these characters back, at least look up the definition of "fanservice" before you use it. Please.

They really forced Marnie from a drug addict finally trying to overcome her addiction to a cult member who says nonsensical things. They forced UL Paper contact from a witty blackmailing fed to a random mook you have to kill in a mission. They forced Johnny from a hardened criminal to a whiny bitch who is scared of a drunk Canadian hillbilly. And don't tell me that meth makes you weak, because meth actually has the opposite affect and makes you have an agressive and unpredictable behaviour. Edited by nobum62

Fanservice- pleasing the fans, "servicing" them and giving them what they want

So making Johnny K's character inconsistant to get killed by a drunk Canadian hillbilly and having Terry and Clay run away from the hillbilly is fanservice? pleasing the TLAD fans?

I love the references to be honest. It makes the world of GTA more full and fleshed out. As if everything happened for a reason and people know about it. I for one love it.

I don't think they over did it in V. I think it was perfectly fine.

If you hated The Lost and Damned? f*ck off, you're not a fan.

If you hated V because Johnny got killed? f*ck off. You're not a fan.

If you were just glad to see Johnny one last time before WTF? Liquor bottle! Boot to the face! Boot to the face! Boot to the face! Boot the face! Dead. Then? Then you're a fan.

Hey, I was sad to see him go. I liked Johnny. But GTA didn't kill him, Trevor did. Which made me kind of hate Trevor at first, but, I mean, how can you stay mad at a motherf*cker as funny as Trevor. Trevor was hilarious. He seems like the kind of guy that, when he was a kid, instead of lighting a bag of poop on your front porch, he'd tie it around a brick, light it, and throw it through your window.

You have to remember that Rockstar will treat GTA IV, TLAD and TBOGT as separate entries into the GTA Series, despite them taking place at the same time and place as each other.

With the 3d Era, Rockstar had the pickings of two games before it, Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City to help bridge the gap between the two. With GTAV, Rockstar have the HD Era, which at this point, only includes GTA IV/TLAD/TBOGT, so break it down like that:

GTA IV

- Packie

- Karen

- UL Paper Guy

- Marie

- Johnny*

- Ashley*

TLAD

- Johnny

- Ashley

- Terry

- Clay

TBOGT

- Rocco

- Johnny*

- Packie*

Now, The Lost had a reason to leave LC, Rocco already said he was skipping town and going to Venturas (not far from Los Santos if we are to believe it's still in North San Andreas), Packie we saw get on a plane at the end of TBOGT so he could be going anywhere, Marie got off from her one addiction and moved right onto another, the only ones who seem forced in this case are ULP and Karen.

It's just TLaD fanservice for TLaD fans who weren't fans of TLaD at all. It's all very complicated, you wouldn't understand. Edited by Deadly Target

that makes no sense. non-TLAD fans include the people who didn't play TLAD at all, and didn't know who johnny was. so what about the people who didn't know johnny? then johnny appearing would be pointless. People who don't know who johnny was will just be unaffected when he dies, while TLAD fans will get pissed at the way he was killed.

People reacting to Johnny's death:
TLAD fan - What. The. Actual. f*ck. The man who killed a politician and many secret service guarding that politican, who killed dozens of cops to save Elizabeta's friend, and who killed dozens of SWAT in a prison to stop Billy from ratting him out, got cheaply killed by a man who lives in a trailer? Who the f*ck wrote this sh*t?
Person who doesn't know johnny - Wow trevor killed that guy for no reason. Wow he's crazy.
If johnny was replaced with a random guy, the reactions would be like this:
TLAD fan - Wow trevor killed that guy for no reason. Wow he's crazy.
Person who doesn't know johnny - Wow trevor killed that guy for no reason. Wow he's crazy.
My point is that trevor can still be portrayed as a crazy guy without pointlessly killing johnny

I will agree that it's all quite difficult to comprehend, and very difficult to give an understandable explanation, but rest assured it's well written fanservice.

I think dying pointlessly WAS the whole point of Johnny's death. The man was doomed from the start. His story was so depressing it made Niko like like a whiny kid by comparison, and Niko was a professional card-carrying badass motherf*cker.

-His mother always told him he'd be a bus driver. High hopes there.

-His brother joins the Army and steadily loses respect for him.

-His leader causes an accident that cripples his friend Angus, chops a girl's leg off, and gets him arrested. Upon release he immediately sh*ts on Johnny's truce with the AoD.

-His friend Jason gets killed by "some f*cking Pollack/Serb/whatever the f*ck"

-His leader and his bitch secretary both turn on him and get half the chapter killed.

-His friend Jim reportedly gets killed.

-His clubhouse gets wrecked so bad the Lost burn it down themselves.

-He's reduced to living in Brian's sh*thole.

-He was with that Leila girl at one point or another but she allegedly died. About the same time as Jim. Curious...

-He can't stay away from that albatross Ashley and gets sucked into her downward spiral...

-...and brings the entire MC with him...

-...into meth abuse.

-TPI contracts outsiders to hit up Lost MC business ventures, killing lots of brothers in the process.

-He even has them steal him a Lost van to f*ck Ashley in to torment Johnny.

-Johnny confronts Trevor at the worst possible time, and is ended.

-Terry and Clay are ended.

-Stab City is ended, visited by their grieving brothers, and ended again.

-Even after his death, Trevor, his cronies, and even Johnny's brothers talk sh*t about him, even saying that Billy was better. That's low.

-Lost brother continue to get killed individually and in small groups. Johnny's dealer Larry gets arrested. Finally that trash whore Ashley dies of heroin under a pile of geriatric gangf*ck.

Johnny was the proverbial redheaded stepchild of the player roster. Even Vic Vance never had it so bad. At least with him you KNEW it was gonna end tragically.

@UT, Don't like how Rockstar did their game? Too bad mate, they'll do it again. And again. And again. Till the game finally does. And every single one of us will pay to see what happens next. You've gotta be clueless not to expect Rockstar to bring older characters. It's a series with eras for a reason.

That doesn't really address my point on the difference between a subtle cameo and making a game of nothing but cameos. I can take it if, say, Niko was only mentioned as an "eastern european guy making moves that went quiet", but if you're going to send in Packie, UL Paper guy, and everybody else just to make a fanboy go "HOLY sh*t" and ejaculate all over his pants, then the freshness of the product goes stale and it begins feeling more and more like a fanfiction where all the main characters meet up in a brand new location.

So you expected something different from a company that has the goal of making as much money as possible? Looks like you should've used your noodle and bought a different game.

How does "making as much money as possible" relate to cameos in a game?

Easy writing and fan service. If I heard Niko would appear in the next GTA, I'd drop everything and buy it. Fan service, mate.

You mean lazy writing catering to fanboys?

I wouldn't think the sales of a game would spike up that high if it's revealed that a character from a past game were to show up. Like I've been saying mate. GTA 4 was the best selling game when it came out, and the only character from previous games then was Lazlow. If what you're saying were to be believed, then GTA 4 would've done poorly on the market.

Hate to brake it to you but it was revealed that there was going to be a returning character.

Fan service is fine to an extent. It's good to please the fans as long you don't betray your ideas and creations. You need to find a balance.

I tought this was pretty obvious.

I think the references weren't that much of a big deal. Replace all the returning characters with random guys and you get the same thing (with no TLAD bitching).

You mean lazy writing catering to fanboys?

we're all considered fanboys in one degree or another...but lets take Rocco for instance. if he was just a random "LC gangster turned movie agent" people would be asking for a bit of background information. Look at Enzo Bonelli; there has been speculation surrounding his origins when in actual fact he is similar to Papi; just a dude with a name. Would it really have had the same effect if the person detaining Haines then part of the Kortz standoff was just a random IAA agent, or the ULPC guy? Same with Johnny K, as its been pointed out, he was pretty much destined to be a loss anyway, if they replaced him with a random Lost MC biker in the cutscene, chances are Rockstar would have slipped in some dialogue about how the Lost fell to sh*t after 2008 and their leader went nomad; thus opening up a whole spectrum of questions.

Lets face it, had Rockstar introduced characters to fill the spaces that IV characters filled, we'd be asking questions about the new characters backgrounds. As far fetched as it is, 5 people coming from LC (two of which work for the same company) to LS isn't much of a stretch, given the 5 year gap.

I don't think there's a problem in being too obvious '-'

IV also had some nice references...
Like those wall signatures of Claude, CJ, Vic Vance, Tommy...
The CJ outdoor.

What's wrong with that? I liked all the cameos except JK. It was kinda nice to see Packie and others again, or to finally shoot Rocco. Hope that there will be cameos in next game except returning former protagonists. I just wish that their fate is left for our imagination, not crushed under the boots of new characters. And cameos must be reasonable, not just unexpleinable cameos for for the sake of cameos.

There's a reason each GTA has been a series of numbered sequels (with expansions) rather than just a bunch of standalone games.
