johnny_zoo
Guys, 70 hours a week isnt uncommon for a job for people in the US. Americans are the most money obsessive workaholics in the world Yet the people that do the least amount of work get the most of the money. It's ridiculous. Americans are practically brainwashed into believing that hard work is a virtue. It's not. Smart work is a virtue. Sometimes that requires working hard. Most of the time it doesn't. Most of the time working hard makes you a gullible underpaid idiot. It' no wonder that everybody is on anti-depressants and in therapy. The only way you can work less and get paid more if if you get higher wage p/h. So what job lets you get more? I know a lot of people jump on bankers, or stockbrokers, or [insert '1%' here] but a lot of those jobs, maybe excluding CEO positions, have work weeks of 120+ hours. OT: Congratulations. That's a nice amount of money you're bringing home there. Don't blow it all in one place. chrisscorsese88
I don't work much during the winter (only 20 hours a week) but during the summer, I work an extra job that's already 40 hours per week, which brings my total to at least 50+ hours per week. Not to mention my dad is kind enough to pay my car payments for me, my only bills include car insurance, gas, phone bill, Netflix, and helping out with the groceries. It's all about that money here in the US. Odyseous2040 1 Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/705281-he-got-the-job/page/2/#findComment-1065393763 Share on other sites

I can see why you think this way, but I dispute the provenance of your suggestions. Certainly, the working classes get pushed around and work long hours for meager wages , but to suggest that wealthier people or people with higher skills work less hard is very misleading indeed. I know software engineers with PhDs and post-docs who work long hours and have had to amass a great deal of professional and academic experience to reach their positions and continue to do so in their current working lives. Vlynor also rightly brings up white collar workers in similar positions. I'd say that hard work is a virtue--the problem is that the working class doesn't get enough recompense for that hard work. I agree with the underlying sentiment of your post, but to suggest that hard work is not a virtue and that high-powered professionals don't need to work hard to maintain their jobs is tenuous indeed. IVIechanomics
Most of my jobs have actually required me to bring my highschool diploma for the company to copy and put on record, though they weren't warehouse positions, the first that comes to mind was the job I had at a saw mill, the second was a prospect I had for a ceramics company, and my current job being a CNC Machinist. Anyway, good luck with the job TC. Let me introduce you to the Japanese and Korean workplace.. I dunno, I would say 70hrs/week is pretty uncommon in the US. Of course it will depend on the type of job, but at least in Japan/Korea people who work office jobs, even at the executive level work mad f*cking hours including weekends. I've heard stories where some employees get relocated to the US, and then suddenly they find themselves with all kinds of free time, and they don't know what to do with it. And congrats OP! People who are fooled into thinking that working 80 hours a week without a day off for 3 weeks straight will benefit them in the end. Which is ridiculous because I see no point in having a lot of money if you have no free time in which to spend it. And the worst part is that if you don't do the whole 80+ hour routine and just work the hours you want then some people will give you sh*t for it and call you lazy. gtamann123
Unions can be good and bad. My dad was a member of the UAW for about 15 years and sure the $30+/hour 100% medical coverage with no co-pays and a month of paid vacation for simple factory work were all good and all. But he also said it was a curse when the companies started moving the plants to Mexico because they got sick of paying the Union wages and benefits. And also I have a friend who works part time at Rainbow Foods and makes $7.49/hr and he has to be part of a Union and pay Dues and everything without an option to opt out because its a closed shop. Seriously? Funnily enough the company that my dad worked for that moved to Mexico ended up going out of business because their quality severely dipped (as expected) and they lost all their contracts. Sure they can be good and bad. Of course benefits and wages tend to be better, but where I work, the Union reps tend to be incompetent, the company knows more about contract and loopholes than the actual Union seems to, nobody has a backbone either. Basically, I'm paying for a premium Union and getting cheapskate quality. The company still shafts its workers and the Union bends over and takes it for the most part. On the other hand, my step dad's got a pretty good Union, they don't seem to have any problems there if you can survive the first few lay offs. WTFThisIsntWii
I'm on a six figure salary, I'm required to be at work for a minimum of 25 hours a week. As long as I keep my company trained, maintained and get all my paperwork done I'm allowed to go home. But I always find myself doing 112 hours a week during busy periods such as pre-deployment, post-deployment before Christmas leave. I don't really mind when I'm out and about on the weapons range, armoury or PT facilities I don't mind. But paperwork sucks leave requests, maintenance inspetions, discliplinary actions, training schedules and medical forms. Although one of the benefits is if I don't feel like working I can take a day off and still get paid. At the moment I'm averaging 45 hours a week (0500 - 1400) with the weekends off.
