sorry if there has been a topic like this Already but what era Overall do you think has the Superior Storylines? Try not to let Fondness for a Particular era Cloud your Judgement.

i would go with the HD Universe Overall the Stories seem more Unique and their Better Written.

IV alone outdoes all of the 3D universe for me. Not to say that the 3D universe is bad or anything like that (still play III VC and SA religiously), I just friggin love IV.

so yeah, hd universe pour moi

You can't really complain about III's story as the games before it never really had a 'story', but the only game in the 3D era that I felt had a good story was Vice City. San Andreas was just all Boy'Z in the Hood, LCS was just a mob story, and VCS had good moments in the story, but all together it was kind of like VC's. He just wanted to get rich, but had to pay back someone and in the end, got rich and killed his enemies. IV's story was the best, IMO. TLaD and TBoGT had great stories, but MY GOD did V set the bar low for VI.

Tough call. While I think GTA IV has the best story overall and GTA V's was kind of weak IMO VC and GTA III have the best stories from the 3D era. Easily beating GTA V.

I'll have to vote HD era I think.

Keep in mind that a lot if it is time relative.

Vice City was actually a good story for it's time when few games had voice acting and few games had actual human stories with characters.

Now, of course, since we demand more of our stories in games, Vice City is just a Scarface clone with racial stereotype characters.

I literally feel sick reading this.

IMO, IV's story is the best but V's story has lowered the bar of HD Universe. I know HD Universe ain't finished yet but now it seems like III Era was much more better in terms of its well-foiled crossovers, well the crossovers between IV and V were quite weak, but it is exactly the opposite for crossovers between IV and EFLC. We'll see if HD Era will beat III Era in terms of stories (but I'm considering crossover more, because they connect the stories to each other) but for now, it seems like III Era's crossovers are way better than HD Era's, so I vote for III Era.

3D - Vice City, SA and VCS, They are the best when comes to story driven gameplay, and amazing missions that introduce several interesting side missions, that in turn, introduced outstanding side characters.

About IV (leaving the DLC stories), I've just one thing to say, it's a boring story that's forgettable, but not the characters, except the protagonist.

I like 3D more and i think it's better than HD era, but i have to vote for HD era here, and here's why: My favorite is Vice City, and IMO it has best story of all GTA games, but it wasn't original. Of course it had it's things done good, but the main events are mixed with Scareface and Miami Vice, so i can give title for best story to IV. While i think III, LCS & SA have better story than V, VCS's story is also rushed as V's, maybe even more, though VCS has less FIB stuff, V has great story in the beginning, so i could say V wins here. HD era overall has original stories and more complex characters, 3D era stories were more connected to each other but had less unique types. TLaD & IV have most unique stories in series IMO, TBoGT's story wasn't good as previous but it can be said it's better than III's maybe. I didn't like III's story a lot, but that doesn't matter for that game. It had some great characters and story overall was 'good', great for it's terms in making for that time. So here's little list:

  1. IV
  2. VC
  3. TLaD
  4. SA
  5. LCS
  6. TBoGT
  7. V
  8. VCS
  9. CTW

Rockstar really paid more attention on stories in latest games by making them more unique with more complex characters. 3D's stories where like just fun and thing to use to explore the game (Especially SA when i say this), with fun characters that are more memorable than some from HD.

Overall, i think HD deserves my vote here, but the differences in my choice are minimum. 3D era is very close to HD, overall 3D is better but if we are talking about story it's hard to choose, but HD deserves just 0.0000001 more.

Tough call for me. While GTA IV's storyline is probably my favorite of the entire series, winning it some major points...

The III Era had a more tightly-knit continuity. While the individual stories themselves were self-contained, a lot of the subplots or background events were tied into the other games. Particularly the Forelli/Leone/Sindacco crime war.

As a major continuity freak, this decision is really hard. A really good story on its own, or a background story in multiple parts.

While I like IV and V, I think the 3D Era is the best in the franchise. I think it has a magnificent timeline, gangs, characters, all that. I even have my own personal fan made stories dedicated to 3D and even HD, but mostly 3D.

MythicalCreature

The 3D games, III, VC, LCS, and to some extent, SA, had some of the best stories of the franchise. And before you say VC was a Scarface rip-off, or a miami vice rip-off, I simply don't care if its either.

'Vice' city was used since GTA1. Sure, that name may be taken from Miami Vice, but tell me this - what else would you associate it with? The beach? Name it Beach City? Or Palm City? Maybe you could, but the kids over in Glasgow may have thought otherwise. So what? Liberty City was named after the Statue of Liberty, San Andreas was named after the Fault Line, so what if Vice City is named after an 80's TV show?

Secondly, Tommy Vercetti may have roughly the same character traits such as a short temper, but anyone can have a short temper or be ambitious. They probably thought it fitted with the story. The Hawaiian shirt factor is baseless, because Tommy isn't the only one who wore Hawaiian shirts in that game. Harry and Lee, Kent Paul, Ricardo Diaz (I guess?), Gangsters, peds, I could go on. Also, exactly what part of the story is actually a rip of Scarface's or Miami Vice's? Ken Rosenberg was the only other character who had similarities with a Scarface character and other than that, the story was a well-written original piece. And that's what we're lookin' for.

Moving on, GTA III also had a great story. The working with the mob thing, tough, twisted (or maybe not) and silent protagonist, everything just fitted perfectly. GTA LCS had a good mafia theme as well. And San Andreas, well the beginning was great, the next was a mix of great, okay, good, bad, worse, despicable and awesome. Though overall, it didn't suck, but nor did it rock.

On average, the 3D era had good stories and a great and smartly set universe timeline.

I haven't played the HD games apart from CTW, but I've read the stories, the majority of the scripts and watched the videos. And from all I've learned, the HD Universe wasn't so bad either. It started off with GTA IV which blasted away Chernobyl with its breathtaking story, The Lost and damned followed, and the HD Universe kept impressing us with its diversity and storylines. These two stories alone would have won it for the HD Universe, if GTA hadn't started to be taken over by 12-year old SA fanboys who wanted MOAR!! And we wouldn't be moaning how TBoGT had a sh*t story cause Rockstar didn't want to check on stories anymore. However, CTW was a bit better. The majority of people haven't really played it, but if you consider the main plot and premise of the story, it is actually quite cool at times. However, seeing how GTA V has a sh*t story with a weak plot, has gotten me thinking otherwise. Reading V's story has ruined my experience of Reading IV's and TLAD's. Which may lead me to thinking - HD Universe might not be so good after all.

However, if I consider the stories as stand-alone plots and not as single timelines, HD comes out on top. IV+TLAD>III+VC. But if I consider the timelines, and the stories as a whole, like the OP asked us to, then I'd have to say the 3D universe is just a little bit ahead of the HD universe. Though the stories weren't all good, but at least none were horrendous as V.

I have taken an hour on writing this one post, this better count. I'M TELLIN YA THIS BETTER COUNT!! Just don't take this last paragraph too seriously.

I say 3D universe. IV and Chinatown Wars was boring, TLAD and TBoGT was alright, and V was the best out the universe.

In the 3D universe, the story was fun and had almost all my favorite missions in the series

Now, of course, since we demand more of our stories in games, Vice City is just a Scarface clone with racial stereotype characters.

I literally feel sick reading this.

Agree, some people actually think that "bad" graphics = bad character developement, no innovation, no writing talent, bad plot etc. :facedesk:

I prefer the 3D era over the HD era btw.

While V outsh*ts San Andreas, IV definitely outshines III and VC.

What do you mean by outsh*t? V us certainly not better than San Andreas.

And vice city was f*cking scarface, what's your point?

Didn't rock? San Andreas has the best story so far.

3D universe because III and Vice City (not so much San Andreas). HD universe had good stories as well with IV and V, but not as good in terms of gameplay plus storyline.

(don't really like IV's gameplay much, the story is amazing otherwise

I know you've just created an account, but bumping a generic 17-month old thread to disagree with 17-month old posts isn't necessary.

Thanks!
