Rules For Survival

Recommended Posts

Obviously there are no written rules for playing Survival in GTAO, however, I think pretty much everyone who plays Survival follows certain unspoken guidelines.

Here are the guidelines I follow:

  • If someone takes a spot for cover in a Survival, that is their spot until they give it up
  • Along the same lines, let people cover their "area" (i.e. in the Boneyard Survival, if I'm covering the left side of the map where the driveway enters from the highway, there is always someone else who feels the need to come over to that area and blow up the cars. Seriously, dude, I got this, and I like using the cars as a road block, of sorts, and blowing them to smitherines during wave 5 when 3 vehicles show up at the same time.)
  • Hold your position, especially when someone is relying on you to cover their back.
  • Practice courtesy and share the weapons/armor/health. People who hog everything (or when I see a low level steal the grenade launcher and not use it), seriously makes me wish friendly fire was allowed.
  • Remember that everyone (unless they're a complete douche) wants to participate in the Survival, give them a chance to kill the enemies.

Agree/disagree? Anything to add?

There's no rule book, but for the love of god share the supplies.

Other people need it just as much as you do.

This only applies when players know what they're doing. Nonetheless I like these rules you follow, but sometimes you have to be the badass so you can make it to the next wave.

Common sense everyone should know after playing a few survivals, but I still see high levels getting killed in early waves running all over the place!

Yes, I know. I believe I stated this in my original post. I am just curious if everyone follows the same unspoken guidelines as I do :)

Most of the time there's no cover in any game format, you'd be very lucky if you got a survival game and everyone followed those rules.

You forgot "Run around the whole map and rely on auto aim." Right trigger, left trigger, rinse, repeat, win.

Here's my rules.
Hide in a good spot
let the low level run around and get killed
Hog the rest of the kills

It's Survival. You do what you have to do to survive. I'll do the same.

No, it doesn't have to be like that. Op is wanting to discuss the unspoken rules, that should come with common sense, but don't. Survivals can be so smooth when proper teamwork is practiced and I'm glad this discussion was brought up. A lot of us still play survival, even though sometimes it's hard to get people to join. There are things in the op that definitely need to be practiced, but aren't. I don't know how many times I've been in my own specific cover area and some jack leg has to come over there and stand right up my ahole. It screws with my view and sometimes even pushes me out from my spot enough that I start taking fire. Worst part is, they generally don't even contribute, just sit there and wait till the wave is done so they can collect rpgs and miniguns. These are not "rules" so to speak, because you are right..... there are none. This is just a good guide for following proper etiquette and allowing everyone to have a good time and complete the task at hand.

So if that "jack leg" as you called him wants the spot you are in why don't you give it to him and go find another spot? It's obvious he isn't very confident anywhere else so maybe you could aide him by giving him the spot he feels is the best one for him to help the group succeed. Just a thought.

Maybe you can add that idea to your "unspoken guidelines"?

If there's an enemy I can kill, I'm sure as f*ck going to kill it. I'm not going to wait for the guy to make his way all the way over to my teammate hiding in a dumpster (or wherever) just so he can get some virtual kills. If he wants kills and isn't getting them, he needs to change his location.

I agree, I was really expanding on the "cover your area" thing. I accidentally blew up a team mate because he walked over near the pile of cars just as I threw a grenade. All because there was one enemy and he apparently wanted that kill. He then proceeded to get all ticked off at me, and it was his own fault that he died.

Yo, OP, you forgot one more:

- when helicopters arrive, DO NOT run out like an doofus. Instead, rely on high levels with mini guns or RPGs. If no one is lvl 100-120+, then take your time, and pick your shots appropriately towards a heli. Of course, the pilot or the tail rotors are always the weak points.

If I wasn't holding a PS3 remote, I would facepalm every time I see someone do this. Seriously.

Maybe you went a little overboard throwing a grenade at a vehicle to kill a single enemy? He probably wan't expecting that. I do that type of stuff all the time (what the other guy did). Yes, the last enemy is over near "your area"...but f*ck that, you're just sitting there waiting, I want the f*cker dead and want to get to the next round so I'm going to come and kill him if I can.

It wasn't the last enemy and there was a van and a truck approaching. I don't typically throw grenades or stickies for fun, they're a little on the expensive side for all of that.

I agree with you, Op. There are unwritten rules in Survival; anyone with a brain and common sense that plays survival normally knows this. Anyone else is just a damn troll.

If you get to a spot first, it's yours until you die. If you get killed, your spot is forfeit. You died, dude. What trips me out is how morons who can't survive without their precious spot have the brain power to figure out how to jump over the back wall to get behind me and push me out in the open, but lack the intelligence to go find another spot.

What I hate are the morons who either go in the back and hide somewhere, or die on purpose to take a free $20k ride. Also, the morons who don't shoot at the helicopters.

I also agree on the 'cover your area' thing too. Like Lamar would say, "Handle yo candle nigga." But if you take too long, yeah, i'mma pop those hillbillies.

Another unwritten rule: Playing Rambo/Schwarzenegger/Stallone/Robocop (you know, staying out of cover and going toe-to-toe with the enemies) is generally cool until the end of wave 3. Before 4 starts it's a good idea to be behind something.

If he beats me to it, it's his spot. If I'm already there its my spot. There are other places to hide with out standing on my feet. Now you're just trying to be confrontational.

So if you leave your spot to grab supplies when preparing for the next wave is everyone supposed to leave that spot open for you to return?

Seems to me this is more about "I can only get alot of kills when im in MY spot" as opposed to "Lets kick some ass together and get through these 10 waves no matter what!"

Just my opinion...

I agree with a lot of what the OP stated, but i really agree with this statement.

The other thing that really bugs me is the people who moan about certain body armour being theirs, just because they're in that area. It annoys me even more when they've died mid-wave and then think they have very right to it first. If i survived, i'm taking that sh*t !!!

Tend to find myself in survivals with lower levels and always a good laugh. Seems it's the higher levels that start the moaning, yet you'd think they would know better.

Just my own observation.
