I remember discussing this some time ago in the V section of the forum, a few weeks before the release of the game. I was immediately called an idiot for even thinking about a GTA game set in the future, with a lot of people claiming it was obviously pandering to Saints Row and Halo and some even accusing me of being an infiltrated employee from Deep Silver trying to bring the GTA franchise down by spreading such malicious ideas throughout the community.

But then again, most people in the V section before the release of the game were 12 year olds who could only relate science fiction with Halo and Saints Row IV, and while I can see why a science fiction GTA doesn't sound pleasing for everyone, I hope people in the Series section can debate on this with slightly more maturity.

So, a cyberpunk GTA: Set in a futuristic city, with conceptual vehicles and weapons. Imagine Blade Runner or AKIRA as a sandbox video-game, something which as far as I know has never been done before, at least not with the dimension of a Rockstar game. Now, this wouldn't be the first time for GTA to go futuristic - Let's not forget GTA2 was set on a retro-futuristic world - But it is still comprehensible the idea might not sound adequate from the standard of having storylines present in the modern world since GTA III. But then again, I do believe Rockstar could make a credible version of the future (Much like the movies I mentioned above) with the gameplay and storyline quality of the series that wouldn't feel in no way absurd or too distant from it's roots.

Jetpacks wouldn't be so stupid then...

It would really give them the possibility to incorporate all the ludicrous Gay Tony / San Andreas style sh*t, while equally delivering a in-depth and well thought out space opera.

I'm ALL for this! Not as a numbered GTA, but as something like Vice City. There are TONS of places to take inspiration from, BTTF part 2, Futurama and The Fifth Element come to mind particularly.

EDIT: Oh, and these songs might fit well in such a setting.

Not right now. It's too soon to just jump ahead into the future. In time, but not now.

I personally wouldn't, mostly for the fact that in almost all forms of media, if you set something in a set date in the future, say, a work set in 1955 said we would have a flying car for every man, woman, and child by 2010. Try watching that in 2014. Feels a bit silly, right?

If 1999's GTA2 (2 Years before the Halo Franchise,7 years before the Saints Row Franchise and 14 years before SR4) did a Retro-Futuristic/Sci-fi Setting (although it was a 2D Top-Down OWG) I am sure R* can do it again with a future HD GTA game and get away with it,by just reading the GTA2 Wiki page every Saints Row Fanboys will STFU lol.

It all depends on the quality of Rockstar's vision. I personally don't think there is anything bad on getting the future wrong, if the game itself is good then it will remain timeless independently on whether it's vision of the future is correct or not. Furthermore, I believe that, with the right research, R* can make something that at least resembles the future.

Well, a futuristic setting would be cool considering how good they do it, but i'm afraid that Rockstar wouldn't consider it for GTA at the least. Maybe with some other franchise similar to GTA (Like RDR) but i'd guess not GTA.

That would be awesome! But instead of making it a GTA game, why not make it part of a new IP?

The Red Dead approach was great. Beyond the core controls, there really wasn't much tying the franchises together (in a good way).

I'd say keep the open-world of GTA instead of something linear like Max Payne, but let it breath.
