To Wet Shave or Not?

I find it easiest to shave my face in or right after a hot shower. It really softens the hair and skin and makes for an all around painless shave. I was even using the same old cheap razor for months too.

@Audio

Ah, ok. Where I'm from, a 'wet shave' means using foam/gel and dipping your blade in water, and a 'dry shave' means doing neither, which is why I couldn't possibly fathom why anyone would choose to do the latter.

Yeah, after the first few replies I realized I wasn't too clear on what I meant by "wet shaving". I think most people consider wet shaving as, well, with water. So that's what it means to them. It's what it meant to me until I started looking into various forms of shaving.

I noticed once you get into the circle of people who take shaving a little more seriously, they refer to shaving with a double edge safety razor, shaving creams/soaps that you lather up with a brush and all that as traditional wet shaving.

Kind of dumb of me not to realize that not everyone is aware of this and not clarifying in the OP.

Either way, this topic is meant to discuss all types of shaving and how people prefer to shave. So it doesn't matter.

I remember talking about this on here before, but I've been considering doing the full collecto; the brush, the straight razor, etc for some time now, but I just don't have the balls to go through with it. There are plenty of instructional videos on YT of course, but the second they say "don't worry, it takes practice", I'm like...f*ck that- does "practice" involve me going all Jason Voorhees on my face before I get it right? Nah man.

my hands shake so there is no way I'll give myself a cutthroat shave.

if it's long do a dry shave first. it clogs up the razor less than do a wet shave :)

I don't want to use a straight razor either. I'd probably nick myself and bleed to death.

If you still want to get into all that though, I do recommend a double edge safety razor. That's what I'm using and you still use all that fun stuff with it like a brush, shaving cream/soap. Still need to be careful with it, but it's pretty safe.

This is the one I own:

I don't put much thought into Shaving, I just wet down the area, put on some cream and get down to buisness, I use Generic disposable Razors. When I get some extra cash I'll probably get a refillable razor or something.

I'll defo try to keep that in mind, Audio. Ever since being introduced to American Psycho a few years back, I've got a bit of an affair with fine grooming!

Not. Don't shave when wet if you use electric shavers. I tried shaving cream too, at my dad's insistence, it's not for me, however. No thanks

Ditto. Gillette Mach 3 blades (i get 'em stupid cheap) in a steamy shower or hot bath, no soap or cream. Just steel and flesh, baby.

My hair is far too thick for that.

Even a new blade will rip the hair out of my face without some sort of buffer.

I do both wet shaving (been using Gillette Mach3 for years) and dry shave with my electric shaver. It all depends on the look I'm going for, but since I usually prefer to have at least a little bit of stubble (I very rarely have a clean shaven face these days), I just use the electric shaver most of the time.

Also I hate shaving, so the less time and effort it takes to do it, the better!

I'm 23 and my beard grows about as well as the top of Hulk Hogans head.

Would probably come off on a f*cking towel if i rubbed hard enough...

All you need is a sharp disposable razor and water, with a good moisturiser for after. You won't get a closer shave than that unless you've got a straight razor.

For aftershave, I really recommend this.

wp71ba067c_05.jpg

Proraso aftershave with green tea and oat. It's the one I use and it has a nice smell to it, not overpowering and applies very easily from a cream. It doesn't sting, it's very refreshing and moisturizes your skin.

I mentioned it in my OP. I can't stress enough how much you guys should check out Proraso or Taylor of Old Bond Street's shaving creams and aftershave line.

The Leviathan

Here lately it's been nothing but electric razor. The ladies seem to really enjoy the friction. Especially down there on Lil' Levi.

Who would want to shave on dry skin? That's just stupid.

Read the last post on the previous page or some posts at the start of this page.

Wet shaving as in traditional wet shaving. Not wet as in with water. I thought that was obvious to most people so didn't bother explaining. Obviously I should have because many assumed I meant wet as in with water. Which I understand due to the title. But I think the OP at least sort of explains it.

Useless gadgets. That's even dumber. There isn't an electric razor in the world that doesn't irritate skin. That and alcohol based aftershave will just make your face age faster.

Useless generally means something has no use.

I would have expected you of all people to know this.

Electric razor is what I use. My parents got it for me for my 12th or 13th birthday and I'm gonna keep it till it goes to sh*t then probably grow a beard when it breaks. It was free might as well use it

But yeah, aftershave can't be good for your skin everyday. To be honest all these creams and other products are a con anyway. If you like to shave and are happy to go all out then fair enough. But you'll save a lot of money and get the exact same shave with a simple blade and water.
