4290171670
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-27045512 Almost 300 people remain unaccounted for after a ferry carrying 459 people capsized and sank off South Korea. The ferry, carrying mainly school students, was travelling from the port of Incheon, in the north-west, to the southern resort island of Jeju. A major rescue effort is under way, involving dozens of ships and helicopters. Those brought to safety were taken to a nearby island. Four people are now said to have died and dozens of others have been hurt. South Korean officials had earlier said that 368 people had been plucked to safety, but later said there had been a counting error. They have now revised down the number rescued to 164. Unfortunately, the missing person can be dead. maybe... Edited April 16, 2014 by 4290171670

RoadRunner71
I'm not up to date about this as I briefly saw it in the news this morning. Has it completely sunk or is it still partially floating on surface? If it has sunk these people can already be given up for dead...
GTA_stu
Yh it's completely submerged. Although that doesn't mean there aren't any survivors still alive on the boat.
Josh
Yh it's completely submerged. Although that doesn't mean there aren't any survivors still alive on the boat. Yeah people were found on the Herald of Free Enterprise hours after their part of the ship was submerged. The one thing that the people who are trapped have to their advantage (if there are any still alive) is that the water is quite warm there at this time of year, so it will probably take a while for people to succumb to hypothermia -- although it's still a pretty large threat to life for people who are currently trapped, I would be more worried about running out of oxygen than hypothermia if I was in a tiny air pocket... Max
Real shame. I have no idea how a ferry that size can capsize at such short notice. RIP to the victims and I hope they find many more survivors.

Mister Pink
Very, very, sad. I'd feel really safe of a ferry that big. Also, I seen people inside waiting to be rescued. I'd never do that. Wait outside. Imagine it capsized quickly and you were inside? I'd be on deck, on the high side preferably at the bow or stern. Sounds like the boat ran aground on some rocks. Some questions will have to be answered. How do boats still run aground in this day and age with depth sounders and charts etc. Crazy. The boat took two hours to sink/capsize. Why couldn't everyone get on deck? They said there was an announcement to "stay still" when people wanted to leave. f*ck that...someone has to be accountable for this. Sounds like it was bad management. I'm listening to a report and they're saying, people who disobeyed the announcement to stay still, survived. Everyone else who obeyed the announcement is missing/dead. This angers me. So sad Edited April 17, 2014 by Mister Pink RUBBΣR░J♢HNNY (スオッ)

GTA_stu
You'd have thought they'd have evacuated a lot sooner, but apparently the severe listing of the ship and how quickly it began listing made it a lot more difficult. Sort of similar to the Costa Concordia. Can't believe they told the passengers to stay still though, and of course seeing as a lot of passengers were children they just did what they were told. It's tragic that they were doomed like that. Seems like a lot more would have survived if the order to evacuate would have been given sooner. Tchuck
The vice principal of one of the schools, who was rescued from the ship, has been found dead hanging from a tree. I guess it must have been terrible the feeling of guilt, that among the 300-odd teens and children inside the ship, he an older man got a new chance at life. Heartbreaking the story of the mother who had to convince her daughter to go on the trip, and now she's missing. With this much time already passed, it seems unlikely anyone else will be rescued. RoadRunner71
The captain of a South Korean ferry that sank this week said he delayed giving evacuation orders because he feared passengers would "drift away". [...] "I am sorry to the people of South Korea for causing a disturbance and I bow my head in apology to the families of the victims," he said. "I gave instructions regarding the route, then I briefly went to the bedroom and then [the sinking] happened" he said. "The current was very strong, the temperature of the ocean water was cold, and I thought that if people left the ferry without proper judgement, if they were not wearing a life jacket, and even if they were, they would drift away and face many other difficulties." he said. He added that rescue boats had not arrived at the time of capsizing. The helmsman at the time, Cho Joon-ki, was also among those arrested. He said that the ship reacted differently to what he had expected. "There was a mistake on my behalf as well but the steering [gear of the ship] turned further than it was supposed to," he told reporters. According to documents seen by the Associated Press news agency, maritime safety officials recommended a full evacuation of the ship five minutes after a distress call was raised. But a crew member told the agency that it took the captain 30 minutes to issue the order. Some experts believe the ship's tight turn could have dislodged heavy cargo and destabilised the vessel, while others suggest the sinking could have been caused by a collision with a rock. Messages and phone calls from those inside painted a picture of people trapped in crowded corridors, unable to escape the sharply-listing ferry. Officials say air has been pumped into the ship to aid any people trapped inside and to help refloat the vessel. Moth
So the captain fled the ship? Remember the other time this happened? They just don't make captains like they used to. What happened to going down with the ship? Also this story is probably the saddest story I've heard this year. Hundreds of students having their lives taken from them. lil weasel
They just don't make captains like they used to. What happened to going down with the ship? Suicide isn't as popular as it used to. And, People don't see the dishonour anymore in losing your ship or passengers/cargo. It seems overloading Ferrys is so common that there is a disaster every six months or so. GOOGLE/BING it.
